"Neophyte Only" Bike for Life Class Starts September 6th   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #31 of 35 |

Would you like to ride a bicycle to:
     Commute to work?
     Go shopping or run errands?
Just ride for recreation, but not have to drive someplace to ride?

All these require navigating city streets in the company of cars.  But you can learn to ride a bicycle confidently, legally, and safely through a Bike for Life course.

Normally the Bike for Life (Road I) classes are open to riders of all skill levels.  However, this class is special in that it is being offered to “Neophytes Only” (Inexperienced riders).  This will allow the less experienced riders the opportunity to "slow down a little" and progress at a rate appropriate for their skill level.  So if you have been thinking of taking the Bike for Life class, but felt a little intimidated or that you weren't quite ready, now's your chance.

Here's what you'll learn in the Bike for Life (Road I) class:
Road I will concentrate on how to operate a bicycle legally and safely on the streets.  You will learn how to shift a multi-speed bicycle properly and effectively, how to perform a bicycle safety check and how to fix a flat tire.  You will also learn emergency bicycle handling skills and crash avoidance techniques.  But mostly, you will learn the techniques of riding on city streets in a proper, safe manner, without being "scared to death" by traffic.  Sessions include both classroom discussion and on-bike practice.

The curriculum for the Bike for Life classes was developed by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB), the oldest nationwide organization promoting bicycling and bicyclist's rights.  The League was founded in 1880 as the League of American Wheelmen.  Further information on LAB can be found at < www.bikeleague.org>.  All instructors undergo special training and are certified through LAB as a League Cycling Instructor (LCI).  Locally these classes are offered through the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC).

Best of all, right now the City of San Diego and SDCBC is covering the cost of this normally $50 class, so there is no charge to you!

Interested?  Meeting dates will be Saturdays, September 6th, 13th, 20th, & 27th.  They are held in the Clairemont area of San Diego (Just west of I-805 & Clairemont Mesa Blvd.).  Each class is 3 hours, from 9:00am to noon (I will be available after each class until 1:00 for off-topic questions, problems, or ???).

Attached to this email is the Road I registration form in PDF file format.  Please fill it out and return it to me as soon as possible to reserve your place.  Class size is limited to no more than 10 people so sign up early.  The mailing address (and the class meeting place) is:

        Kerry Kunsman
        4742 Renex Place
        San Diego, CA  92117

If you have any questions about the Bike for Life course content, or are wondering if you could benefit from the course, please feel free to contact me by email or telephone.

P.S. A word to my former students.  You may wonder why you are getting this email if you have already had both classes.  I believe that you, the graduates, are the best spokespersons there are for these classes.  I want you to know when they are being held so you can tell your friends.

P.P.S. I don't want to be considered a spammer, so if you don't want to hear any more about cycling courses just email me at <kerryk@...> and I will take you off my list.
