Hi folks,

Here it is: http://www.bikefriday.com/escapeny

Want to thank all of the Friday folk who showed up on Saturday and rubbed 20" tires for such a great time. It looked like a Bike Friday dealership!
I think it was the funnest show I've ever done - didn't feel like work at all, thanks to you.
Feel free to share this link with whoever might enjoy it. It will be shared with 25,000 Bike Friday customers and wannabe customers all over the world.
Thanks to Ellen and her team for inviting us - you're mentioned in the report of course.

Cheers,
Lynette

Hi Friday folks again ...

Thanks to all the BF Club of NYers for jumping so swiftly to help! We have the following Fridays to show day after tomorrow:

Sharon Bahus - Tikit
Danny Huff - Pocket Rocket
Melanie Yolles - Crusoe
- are hanging with me at the booth some, I believe? from 10.30am to around 6-ish. Can come and go. Riders actually come in around noon-1pm.

Matthew Hiller - Tandem
Lindsay Lauder - Pro Petite
Ted Hughes - Rocket
- are perhaps leaving their bikes and returning around 6pm to fetch them.

Anyone with an Air Bike?

I wondered what on earth I was going to do about standing the bikes UP, with no bike stands etc. Having them flop on the ground or lean against a table is really UNPRO. So I bit the bullet and went online and bought 3 of these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ZKESCG
$25 bucks each! :o( Gad, I really they work. Suppose to deliver tomorrow, with an Amazon Prime trial.
But there's only three of 'em. If any of you can provide some kind of stand, that would be great. Maybe if you go buy a simple kickstand for your bikes, I will reimburse you, it's the least can do. Or if someone can borrow a rack. Thing is, most racks don't work that well with small wheels.
After, we can go get food. Matt lives a few blocks away and says he can help.
I will have a banner to string up that looks like this:

At this point I have an idea to rig up the suitcase trailer to the Pro Petite, then put the folded tikit inside, along with the stands and banner and whatever, and head up the Hudson bike path. SO if anyone lives down my way (19th and 10th ave), we can ride up together. I believe there's a giant hill in there somewhere - if someone can tell me the best way to get there without sliding back downhill, let me know.

Thanks again. The recession has been somewhat tough for everyone, but especially makers of discretionary income items like, well, folding bikes - even though they are intrinsically more useful and money saving a Coach purse. But we're still here, I still seem to have a job, and you're all helping to support Made in 'merica. Muchas gracias. Since Mexico is half of America.

Location (thanks to Matt for this):
Sakura Park is bounded by Riverside on the west (Grant's Tomb is at the same spot north/south, but between the northbound & southbound lanes of Riverside), Claremont on the east, Seminary Row/122nd Street on the south, and International House on the north. The area with all the trees in this map.

Again, event details are at http://www.bikefriday.com/events/escapeny

PS I just stumbled across this. Thought it was fun - are you in some nutty cool club...

Hello Bike Friday friends in NYC,

Are you ready to Escape NY on a Friday this Saturday?

Register pronto here because the $42 online discount sign-up ends Tuesday Sep 22; thereafter it's $50.

Thanks to the generosity of the New York Cycle Clubyours truly (BF Customer Evangelist) and a couple of rabid NY BF customers will be manning a Bike Friday table at the post ride gathering in Sakura Park opposite Grant's Tomb.

Today Eugene, Oregon - tomorrow, NYC. Read the story behind this clip
We'll be demonstrating the joy of *convenient* bicycle commuting with our "Made in America", multi-modal Bike Fridays tikit. Yup, it really does fold and unfold that fast, and ride nice. Check out the video at the right, view fun tikit on Trial in NYC experiments, and for newbies, here's a quick primer on Bike Friday. I'll also be demo'ing my 3-in-1 reversible, Made in NYC Traffic Cone Bags and raffling it.

Asking a favor ... To save our little company a lot of air freight and keep our carbon emissions low, I planned on borrowing some demo Fridays from our downtown dealer bfold.com. But he's had a run on Fridays and awaiting new stock in October. So I'm reaching out to our Friday community. I would love to display a Tourist, a Rocket and perhaps a tandem set up the way you like to ride it, from around 10.30am to 6pm. Do you think you can help? Roll up, leave it in good hands, ride it home. Or hang with me at the booth for a while!

Also, if anyone is doing the actual ride, do pop by the table with your Friday afterwards, and feel free to help field the frequent "don't you have to pedal more?" question.

I'll be demonstrating my size small princess pink, 5-second folding Bike Friday tikit, plus my custom Pocket Rocket Pro Petite - the sub-20 lb, performance road bike designed for the smaller, lighter rider.

LOCATION Sakura Park is on the East side of Riverside Drive, just north of 122nd Street, and directly across the street from Grant's Tomb. Info and directions
Schedule of Events:
12:30 PM: festival officially opens
Rider return: From 1PM - 6 PM.
2PM: The flat-fixing contest begins
4PM: The raffle drawing for the Madone and VBT Tour of Tuscany
5:45PM: routes officially close
6PM: Sakura finish officially closes

Hey BF Clubbers in NYC,

Just back from Cape Cod! I sent out a email to our BF contacts in NY, asking if anyone would like to help out by swinging by with their Fridays. I seem to have a surfeit of Pocket Rockets, couple of tikits, 1 tandem, but alas! No garden variety NWTs, Crusoes or Airbikes.

The event, and the email I sent out are here:

If you think you might like to help, by meeting me there with your Friday, let me know. Or stop by after the ride, 10.30am-6pm. The details are at the above link. Maybe after we can go get food. I'm largely winging it here ...

There are also some interesting bits of news on the BF blog: BF appearing in a Canadian commuting documentary, beating a $5000 time trial bike (tongue firmly in beak for that one), and shots of the people you meet on a Friday in NYC and under the stoop at bfold - including Steve Friedman, author of the recent  'desperate and dateless on a folder' article in Bicycling which featured BF (great, just what we need :o)  )

On our general news page is an interview with Ciclovia Bogota mover and shaker Gil Penalosa, who just bought a tikit.

Get in touch with me if you want to meet up at ENY!

Hey NY friends and frenemies of Bike Friday ...

You're either a card-carrying member of the BF Club of NY, or you're on my 'biking NYC' list of friends or your wife gave me this email instead of hers.
Reply 'Nein danke' if none of these apply, otherwise, read on ...

Here are 2 upcoming things we can do together while the sun's still shining ..

1. SUMMER STREETS this Sat Aug 15, 7am-1pm ... let's cruise together.

Last Sat, cruising on my pink tikit, I met Don Fannon on his Air Friday, his wife on a SatRDay, and Pocket Rocket owner Danny Huff  (OK, he was on his Brompton). Let's it together this Saturday.
Meet me 9.30am in front of Duane St between West Broadway and Church St Tribeca, after my pooch walking gig.
We can get some chi-chi carbs and a coffee at Bouley Bakery across the road on W Broadway, then cruise up Park St as far as we like (it's a clearway all the way up to 76th until 1pm).
We can eat somewhere if we want. I have to backtrack to Tribeca to poop the pooches again at around 2pm.
Email me or call/text me if you want to join me 5415137711- all bikes welcome. After all, most Friday folks have a garage full of other bikes (except me).

2. ESCAPE NEW YORK Sat Sep 26 - seeking 2 Bike Friday Evangelists, 1-5.30pm
NYCC have kindly offered Bike Friday a booth @ Escape NY's Expo.
I am seeking a couple of Friday folk to hang about the booth with me, show their Fridays and create buzz  - helping stimulate MADE IN AMERICA big time.
David Lam @ bfold may or may not be able to make it that day, though I am hoping he can.
I will be there with my tiny pink tikit and Pocket Rocket Pro. Really need to have someone with a more normal sized Tourist, Crusoe, or Pocket Rocket. Maybe even a tandem!
I'll be there from 1pm, but  if anyone riding a BF could stop by and donate a few minutes of your time to showing off your bike, we'rd appreciate it.
BF are offering 2x $50 gift vouchers the two people who can hang out with me for most of that time, in the booth.
Let me know. We can't sell anything, but I am hoping to donate one of my Traffic Cone Bags http://www.galfromdownunder.com/tcb to a contest - maybe fastest female flat fixer in the west? Imagine if you did it on a Friday! LET ME KNOW.

Hey, I'm not contrary to the Bikes In Buildings bill. But since everyone's doing such a supreme job on supporting it, someone's gotta wave the folding flag, because no one else is - not even architects:

http://galfromdownunder.blogspot.com/2009/06/folding-bikes-start-with-horse-before.html

So it might as well be me! It's all part of the solution.

=v= With due respect to my esteemed colleague Lynette Chiang,
I think if we build with full-sized bikes in mind (heck,

=v= Some movement on this legislation. Some sort of meeting is
happening tomorrow in which John Liu (Transportation Committee
chair) explains his position:

I think if we build with full-sized bikes in mind (heck,
why not tandems and pedicabs), we'll have room for even more
Bike Fridays. ;^)

I have no idea if this get together is for NYCC members only, but I'm sure
they'd welcome guests of members into the club - potential new blood!
I am going along with a BF customer - if at least a couple more of you are
interested we can share a table of 4. See below.

NYCC is gearing up for its second get-together this month to watch the Tour De
France.
Lance is back for round eight, & we planned a great event. Join us tomorrow
night.

Tuesday, July 21:
Bar 12 Sports Bar & Restaurant
206 E. 34th St.
Between Second and Third Avenues
(212) 545-9912
8:00 p.m.

Stage 16 159 km from Martigny to Bourg-Saint-Maurice
One of the final mountain stages. Riders make their way up an alpine mountain
with fans just inches away. Once they reach the summit, Col du Petit Saint
Bernard, it is a 4000 foot drop in 29 kilometers, as riders negotiate 19
switchbacks at full speed.

We have our own private area to socialize: drinks all evening at happy hour
prices, and special food platters compliments of the management. Still hungry?
How about good food * (see "Rules of the Road" below) and drink specials ($5
well drinks and $4 drafts on select beer)? Bar 12 is a sports bar that features
17 plasma TVs.

PLEASE RSVP in advance for the event. We need to get an idea of how much space
we'll need. E-mail us at events@... with the words TdF RSVP in the subject
line. Include name, phone, # of people.

*RULES OF THE ROAD:
The following applies at this event: $10 minimum per person with 20% gratuity +
tax automatically added. No individual checks. Pick a table and settle your
check with that table. Minimum of four people to a check. All reservations
expire at 8:15 p.m. Then we go to the waiting list.

I paid $900, and would like to recoup most of that. New models sell for almost $1100, so you will be saving quite a bit buying it from me. It's a medium sized frame. I'm 5'8" with long legs, and it fits me quite well.

The specs:

Stock Bike NWT406 - flat bars - 16-speed - GripShift shifters - Hybrid + Custom
Frame: MED is: 56cm TT, 16" mast, 13" Riser, and 80mm stem

Friday folk and other folding funsters - let's get together for this tomorrow. I'll probably do the B, and ride the pink tikit or the pink Pro. Can't decide!

Newcomers Ride - Saturday, July 11

The Newcomers Ride is this coming weekend. New or not, don't miss this annual NYCC favorite.

Date: Saturday July 11
Time: 9:00 a.m.
Place: Central Park Boat House parking lot
(just north of the 72nd street transverse, on the east side of the park)

There will be rides for all levels: A, B & C (check the Web site: http://www.nycc.org/rides_day.shtml to determine which ride level to choose.) When in doubt, go one level below. This is your ride! Schmooze with new and veteran fellow club members on this mystery ride. We'll ride to a secret spot in N.J. for an alfresco lunch. Bring a sunny attitude and money for lunch. Of course, we'll have drawings for prizes, including a club jersey. Check the NYCC message board http://www.nycc.org/mb/threads.aspx?B=1
for any last minute changes or weather cancellations.

David

This ride sounds like a fun idea - anyone else interested? Let's get together and make it a Friday Friendly ride! Boy do I need a bit of R&R - have not been about to ride on a Sunday to Friday due to my grueling (ironically) 3 month yoga teacher training evening/weekend course which ended last night. Yes folks, I am now certified to teach Vinyasa yoga along with a million other under-employed yoga teachers in New York :o). Read my take on it, and special 'Yoga for Cyclists' focus here:
Also, a new batch of my Traffic Cone Bags finally arrived to keep you alive on 8th avenue bike lane and beyond. Even in the bloomin separated bike lane I nearly got wiped out by an MP3 wearing, pad thai delivering biker who thought he could squeeze past me in the 1" on my right.

David's Independence Day Ride (details copied)
Calling all bike riders. I would like to invite you all to join me on Saturday, 4th of July, on a short ride from Manhattan to New Jersey, where we will have a excellent view of the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Show with the New York City skyline as a backdrop. I have found the optimal viewing location. We will meet in front of the Days Hotel, located on West 94th Street between Amsterdam and Broadway in manhattan. We will depart at 5pm sharp. We will not wait for anyone who is late, so your punctuality is a must. Bring your own food or snacks, water and non-alcoholic beverages. After viewing the Fireworks show, we will be taking the New York Waterway Ferry back to Manhattan. You are responsible for your own fair. This is an open invitation to anyone who is willing to join me. Hope to see you there.

tnx again david

The annual Little People Convention is actually in NYC this year - Brooklyn, July 4-10. I just wanted to share my story about them and their desire - and need - to ride a bike.
CHANGED. MY. LIFE.
I just want to raise awareness and provide this as background next time you see a dwarf in the street and experience those natural reactions, trying not to stare, feeling sympathetic etc. They are utterly, utterly amazing people.

Meeting-may be of interest to you et al in our role as advocates &
educators-

Monday Evening June 15,2009 @ Judson Church. An opportunity to hear
from & share information with an elected official: Kathleen
Rice,District Attorney of Nassau County. Ms. Rice has developed a
nationally recognized model to combat DWI. She was featured on a 60
Minutes Segment this past January. This is obviously a very serious
topic. Ms. Rices' activities where brought to my attention at the ghost bike
memorial ride this past January. She has been involved with two cases' in
which a cyclist has been the victim. The program is suited to all especially
too,pedestrians,cyclists, motorists,teenagers,transportation
advocates,attorneys,& to medical/mental health professionals.

Please see http://www.5bbc.org/events.shtml for complete details & for
related links-

Hope that all is well!
