Lecture: A Cyclist's History of New York
New York City is home to a thriving bike culture, including the country's
largest recreational ride and scores of bike-related clubs, businesses,
events, and craftsmen. Cycling historian (and Bike Friday owner) David
Herlihy, author of Bicycle: The History (Yale University Press, 2004), will
present an illustrated history of biking in New York, including races,
roads, equipment, clothing, and cycling's cultural impact and influences.
Highlights include the bicycle crazes of the 1860s and 1890s, a milestone
court case for cyclists' rights, standing-room only Six Day Races at Madison
Square Garden, and technological and social changes aplenty. Sponsored by
Bike New York in celebration of Bike Month NYC.
Sat., May 24, 2:00 p.m., Museum of the City of New York (1220 Fifth Ave. at
104th St.). Free with museum admission. Valet bike parking available
