Thank you, everyone, who voted for me! I was honored to have received
enough votes to be one of the top-3 contestants who got interviewed by
Team Evotri on Monday. Yesterday I found out, though, someone else had
a vision for uniting the endurance sports community that turned out to
be a better fit for the team. Her project had to do with developing a
youth triathlon program.
However, due to the incredible support and visibility I got on this
contest, I'm going to launch my idea any way. As some of you may have
heard, I'll be bringing together various online media about everyday
athletes (photos, videos, podcasts, blogs, etc) into a new website and
also organizing some challenges to motivate others to lead healthy
lives through endurance sports. More details can be found on my blog
HumbleTriathlete.blogspot.com if you're interested. I'll post again
when I'm ready to receive contributions from the community and hope
all of you will consider being a part of it!
Ride Happy! -- Shirley
Pardon me, I'm still learning how this email group works. It may be
that the email links in Lynette's post worked fine (i.e., they
triggered your usual mail program) if you clicked on them in the email
you received. I just read her post on the group board and noticed that
the BF Hawaii's group email program was triggered when clicking on the
links.
Sorry for any confusion -- Shirley
First of all thank you, Lynette, for mentioning me below and approving
me to be a member of this group!
Secondly, thank you to everyone who's already voted for me! There's no
way for me to know how many votes I have, unfortunately, so I've just
got to keep rounding up as many as I can by Friday, 3/21/08, 11:59PM
Pacific Time. Note that the links in the email below actually cause
the BF Hawaii's email program to start up so please do NOT use them.
Instead, send an email as you normally would to vote@... with
my blog URL, http://HumbleTriathlete.blogspot.com, on the subject line.
Regardless of what happens, I will be back in Kona in June, Sept & Dec
2008 and looking forward to meeting some of you.
Mahalo!
If you take a moment to vote for her it will really help her. Oh yeah, and it will make Bike Friday famous and keep me in a job, so I can visit you again.
See below and forward to others who might be interested. Danke!
On my blog, however, you'll see a new video that I've created to illustrate my personality and commitment to the endurance sports community. So if you have the time to do so, please check it out. You can vote from there as well by clicking on the EVote button at the bottom of the post.
Personally, I think the team could use more females (so far, 4 guys and only 2 women!). Being older, from a non-traditional background, and pretty computer savvy, I think I can reach a lot of new people in our sport and bring those who are already in it together.
So please vote for me and pass the word on to others you know. I'll post a similar request on the YAK group shortly. This time voting lasts for a week (3/15-3/21) so there's much more time!

We're riding Tantalus at 4.30pm today then eating at the green papaya in Kaimuki

1. KAILUA-KAAWA-KAILUA - Start 7am Kailua Beach Park, potluck bbq back at Kailua end, with Team Jet. Nice group apparently, slow, med, fast riders and half women! I've been invited by BF owner Cam Shuford --- anyone want to join us?
I think I might do #1 since I haven't ridden with Team Jet before - Cam says everyone is welcome to join in the Potluck bbq at Kailua beach park Sunday, maybe around 11-ish?
I got my driving leaner's permit. Thanks to the folks who are letting me practice... now all I need to do is work on parallel parking and oh yeah, drivin on the non-Aussie side of the road ... :o)
Just another reason for more bicycles, less cars ... right? There's a movie clip for people who don't want to read my diatribe ... and feel free to comment ...

JB,
Thank you so much for the detailed reply. A couple more questions if
you don't mind. If I rode from Kona up the coastal road how is to 270
up to Hawi and would it be doable to ride 250 south from Hawi to
Waimea? My tentaive plans were to ride from Kona to Hawi and stay,
then to Waimea stay, on to Honokaa and stay, one of the the innkeepers
in Honokaa said it is only a fifteen mile down hill from Waimea. Do
you think the ride from Kona to Hawi or Waimea would be too tough and
that maybe I should break it up and see if I can stay overnight
somewhere along the way? I"m probably good for 50 to 60 miles a day,
but I am a rather slow climber plus I will have panniers. I'm a tourer
at heart.... going fast is not in the cards for me. Also, considering
I'm not familiar with the island and I have 6 days to get back to Hilo
from Kona what areas of the island we you consider the best to use my
free days? Thank you again. It is great to have a locals
perspective. Anne
J B Friday wrote:
Dear Anne,
Yes, we do have a bus system that crosses the island. Also, there's no
problem riding back. The northern route through the town of Waimea is
probably easier than the southern route. Waimea itself is about 2800
feet elev so it will be quite a climb to get there. Coming from Kona,
you can either travel the coast road to Kawaihae or the upper road. The
coast road has wide shoulders and lots of cyclists (triathletes, as
it's where they hold the Ironman.) The upper road has no shoulders at
times. I've never ridden it and I never see cyclists on it. Both roads
have traffic at 55 mph +. The highway through the windward side has
wide shoulders. Lots of climbs in and out of gulches. All in all more
traffic than the southern route but not as much climbing (the climb
Hilo to Volcano is 4000 feet.) On the windward side you can try to find
the old road through Ahualoa coming out of Waimea going to Hilo and
certainly the "scenic drive" from Pepeekeo to Papaiko near Hilo.
For a longer ride you could ride up the coast all the way to Kapaau on
the northern tip of the island and ride the Kohala Mountain Road back
into Waimea.
Waimea is the center of vegetable farming here. There's a good farmers
market at the Hawaiian Homes complex in Waimea but I'm not sure of the
dates.
Kohala and Waimea are the center of ranching here, but "ranching" has
largely become real estate development. (Don't let they cowboys hear
that...)
Lots of small farms have sprung up on the Hamakua coast after the
demise of sugar ten years ago. More as you approach Hilo. Hilo has the
best farmers markets in the state, Saturday and Wednesday.
Honokaa has transformed from a plantation town to a viable diverse
community. A nice ride would be out to see the Waipio valley lookout 7
miles north of town.
I would not recommend Saddle Road unless you're a real adventurer in
top shape. A 6,700 foot climb and a road with fast traffic and no
shoulders.
Be prepared for rain on the windward side of the island.
Good luck,
J. B. Friday

Hello,
I'm participating in a sustainability bicycle tour on the big island
from december 15-22 starting in Hilo and ending in Kona via the
southern route. We will be visiting farms all along the way, which is
of great interest to me as we have a nursery/farm in Ohio. I'm hoping
to come home refreshed and with some new ideas to put into action here
in Ohio. The tour ends in Kona and I am tentatively planning on riding
my bike back to Hilo via the northern route although I have heard that
throwing my bike on the bus is a possibility. Any route suggestions,
places to visit, and not to be missed sights would be greatly
appreciated. I have from the 22 to the 28th to get back to Hilo. If
any other Bike Friday owners would care to get in some cycling it would
be fantastic to share the experience. Anne Kluznik(pedaling a purple

Just a note to confirm my Dec 1 and 3 movie showings on Oahu next
week - the final email with details is below, and it's also on
http://www.bikefriday.com/events
This will be the last bleating from me for another year, please
shout if you want to be liberated from this list. It was just a bit
hard to go through plucking out folks who did not live on Oahu!
- I hope you can make it to one of the shows. It would be great to see you.
I have a couple of guest passes to the HBL dinner on Friday Dec 1
if any of you would like to join me. The catch is you will be strongly
encouraged to join the Hawaii Bicycling League. Let me know.
- We'll probably do a Social Ride on Dec 2 and/or 3 (before the Kaneohe
show) - contact me if interested - some of you already have.
Maybe we'll just do the Hawaii Kai route unless
there is a more innovative suggestion. I just did the Saddle Road on the
Big Island with folks here - going up at 6mph for 4 hours got a bit old, but
coming down was a screamer - actually funner than Haleakala, in that you did not
need to use your brakes, but could freewheel at a constant 32 mph.
http://tinyurl.com/y346oq
- BF Club of HI leader Ralph Dobson is appearing in the Nutcracker on
Dec 1,2 and 3. I'd like to try and make it to the matinee or evening show on Dec
2 and
experience the new theater - would someone like to join me? I think Ralph can
offer a
'friends and favorite foe' ticket at a $4 discount. Let me know 541-513-7711.
Please share this with whoever might be interested, and thank you for your time

ABOUT THIS MOVIE:
ROUTE 66 BY BICYCLE: PEDALING THE MOTHER ROAD
Duration 45 minutes
In April this year, Race Across America legend
Lon Haldeman led 40 cyclists 2,488 miles
from LA to Chicago to celebrate the 80th Anniversary
of Route66. This movie is an upbeat two-wheeled journey
along the paved and potholed 'forgotten road', eating at
classic '66 cafes, meeting famous olde road characters
and visiting beloved icons of roadside America.

To stop receiving all email from Bike Friday,
reply 'nein danke' and we'll whisk you off our list
1) Just to let you know that one of our customers posted some detail info on riding the Saddle Road in the Big Island, in case you EVER want to do that or tell someone else (not) to :o)
2) I am about to finalize details of the Route66 movie showing at the HBL Annual Meeting so please keep Dec 1 free and let me know of you're coming along ...
3) Lon has taken the money you donated at my talk at Ralph's place in Kaneohe last year and is down in Peru right now - buying library books for about three schools. $100 buys their libraries a ton of good stuff.
4) I arrive Oct 13 - too much work here at Bike Friday! I just finished presenting my movie on the east coast and everyone over there is fascinated by the lives you all lead as portrayed on my Hawaii page, http://www.galfromdownunder.com/hawaii
In Texas they all decided to go grow some tomatoes in their hi-rise concrete window boxes.
If you're homesick (yeah right) for life on the east coast, you can read about my recent visit here:
Hey Friday friends!
I'm back! Landing in Hawaii Nov 4 for a month - first a week or so in Honolulu,
then to the
Big island to check out my little piece of turf near Pahoa, then back to
Honolulu to present
my Route66 DVD at the HBL Annual meeting Dec 1, where everyone's invited.
One of our Bike Friday dealers, Alice B Toeclips, wants to do an overniter up
Mauna Kea
Nov 19-20 and we invite anyone who wants to partake. She might have to go back
but we
can make it part of a longer ride too. Or not. See below. Let me know.
Looking forward to seeing you all again.

Bike Ride up Mauna Kea
Rocky Mountain cyclist is looking for others to join me in a ride up Mauna Kea.
Here's the plan, though I'm open to changes & am soliciting kama'aina advice--
Sunday, Nov 19th meet over a 7:00 am breakfast at a Hilo restaurant.
Pedal 38 miles to the Mauna Loa State Recreation Area & spend the night in a
housekeeping cabin. (Cost $55/night for up to 6. Price includes beds, bedding,
towels,
toilet, hot shower & equipped kitchen, we bring the food.)
Monday the 20th, pedal & hike 16 miles to the summit, enjoy the view, then turn
around &
fly home.
Contact: Linda Gryczan (rhymes w/bison), I'm a slow & steady climber, well
acquainted w/
riding up tall mountains, fine w/altitude & cold weather, quite pleasant &
agreeable, if not
downright entertaining. Would love to know road conditions, what its like to go
from 0 to
14,000 in two days, & do people actually do this sort of thing?! Before the
4th, e-mail
conlin@... or call (406) 443-9277. After the 4th, I'll be on the Island,
away from a
computer, but checking phone messages daily.

Hey Hawaii pals,
After leaving your sunny shores via Texas and Arizona I finally made
it to the end of Route66 on my Bike Friday.
In case any of you have ever wondered what route is like to bike and
mince hamburger with, take a look:

Or perhaps you'll say, hey, we came to Hawaii to leave all that
automania behind!
FYI I am staying with the Peru tour organizer Lon Haldman in
Wisconsin, making a DVD movie of Route66, and he is going down to
Peru to buy some more clothes etc for them this year from the
donations you gave at my little showing.
Hope to see you when I next visit - maybe later this year - to plant
something edible on my path of lava on the Big Island of course. Good
vibes to those of you doing Vipassana course in Koke as we speak...

Hi David,
Lynette Chiang here, Bike Friday Customer Evangelist :o) Pity we didn't connect
on Maui -
BF owner Susan Boatright who lives here just rode with me down Halekakua (not
sure if
that's the spelling) - awesome 37 miles descent, with a killer slice of pizza at
the bottom
in Makawao!
I have been on Hawaii since Dec 5 and will fly back to Eugene Feb 20. Not sure
if I wrote to
you with the following tips or not but just in case I didn't:
BIG ISLAND:
On the Big Island, Hilo, there's a good hostel called Arnott's $15 a night.
Great biking
along the Red Road in Kalapana area. You can ride from Hilo to Pahoa, then down
to
Kapoho, take a right along the Red Road and back to Pahoa and Hilo. Nice loop.
Good
cycling north of Hilo too - stay on the fragments of the old road. I stayed with
a cyclist and
activist Charles DiBella http://www.dibella.biz/cycle
His email address is charles@..., he might be able to rent you a room
for a few
nights, ask him. Cool guy!
While in Hilo you might be able to connect with JB and Katie Friday
jbfriday@...
who are BF owners - I rode with them - did not stay with them. Cool folks!
I'm not keen on the Kona area so much (reminds me of California) but a friend
and former
BF salesguy Mike Kelly lives there, you can try him on mtabash@... - great
guy!
The ride south is great once you get past the touristy trafficky area.
Deep in the jungle, in Kapoho (yet really only a few miles from Pahoa) you can
try BF owner
Ann Kobsa and Phil who have a workstay arrangement on their incredible
self-sustainable
property or you can pay her nightly. Just an amazing woman. Read about her on
http://
www.bikefriday.com/bf/carfree, the first article. I am writing up a story about
her now.
Leave a message for her on 808-965-6273, email autofreeann@...
Near Hilo (Keaau) there is a guy called David DeForest who was very kind to me,
and was
interested in my Bike Friday. He might want to catch up with you in Hilo and
look at your
Brompton. phone him on 808-968-7109.
Tim Currier who I met at the Vipassana retreat here has land outside Pahoa you
might be
able to camp on. 808-640-5540 - great guy.
KAUAI:
Totally lousy for biking and hospitality in my opinion, unless you have big
bucks to spend
or know people and I had neither. Even when I knew people and even then I was
not able
to stay anywhere easily. There is an expensive $25 hostel in Kapa'a, and right
around the
north side a YMCA on a billion dollar beachfront for $12 a night, with surly
caretakers full
of attitude. If you can stash you bike somewhere you can hike the Napali coast
at the end,
which is 11 miles and not for the faint hearted. It depends how much time you
have. Do
not camp on Anahola beach, Anini and Haena are passable but trawled my ice
addicts at
times. There is a campground at Lihue. Just wait till you read my story on THAT
island.
I am writing up reports on all this at http://www.bikefriday.com/bf/gfdu-hi2005
I'll be staying at Ralph Dobson's on Oahu from Jan 25-Feb 20.
My cellphone is 541-513-7711 if you want to chat! You can reach me on
lynchiang@... - I rarely check this yahoo email group.

Uncle Billy’s hotel is usually
inexpensive for Hawaii rates. They are in Kona and Hilo see www.unclebilly.com/ .
I’m not sure about B&Bs and
camping can be dangerous for an outsider.

Hi
I am a bikeFriday Test ride dealer in NYC. I am
currently here Island hopping with my folding bike. Unfortuantely, I
decided to bring my brompton as it is a bit more easy to fold but, I now
realize the benefit of gears in this Island Paradise.
I am currently in Maui it is pretty hilly but managed
so far as I am staying with a friend and do not have to bother with camping and
hotels.
However, this Sunday I will be off to the Big Island
(Kona) I would like to loop the Island. I am looking for recommednations
in terms of campsite and in expensive hostels and B&Bs. Also if
anyone knows how hilly it can be in the Big Island.
Any information is greatly appreciated. I will
will be in the Big Island from 1/22 to 1/29 and then to Kauai to the 4th.
Many Thanks
David Lam

Hello David,
Please check the Bike Friday website and peruse Lynette Chiang's recent trip on the Big Island. I think her e-mail is listed and also JB Friday who hosted her there. He might have better ideas about where to stay. Good luck.
