ALOHA! The Bike Friday Club of Honolulu, Hawaii started started out when a team from the BF factory decided to go visit the many BF owners traveling between the islands with their Bike Fridays, help out in the Hawaii Marathon, and pedal round the Big Island.
We staged a slide show and demo at Island Triathlon and Bike owned by Frank Smith, and stayed with Greg and Mei Sanders, as well as Bike Friday owners (and avid aquarists) Wade and Lori Shimoda. The inaugural club ride took off from Frank's store and included Gregory Pang, leader Ralph, and Maj Jim Gibson who snapped up the demo Air Llama.
Once on the Big Island, we had a wonderful stay with both Pam Taylor (dreaming of a Sat R Day) and Grant Janet Miller of HP BikeWorks in Kona, including a very kind invitation to their staff party. Grant has since acquired a Pocket Rocket Pro for those roadies who want to do the Iron Man and never be without their wheels...
When we left the conversation was about organizing a future "Little Wheels, Big Island" tour, self-supported (though all in favor of Greg Pang's idea of a sag wagon say 'aloha').
Leader and Ironman Ralph assures all those who want to ride with him that he is perfectly capable of riding at a leisurely place if the company is good - which is always is when you are riding a BF!
Co-leader Jeri El-Swaify picked up her Princess Pink Pro Petite in June 2005. She plans to race it and encourage more women to get out and ride. Stop by Island Triathlon and Bike for a chat with Jeri!
