This ride is being offered in Newburyport, MA.
(approximately 35 miles north of Boston)
The Baggcyclist ride this month is:
ABS---------Adventure, Biking, and Saturday.
Place: Plum Island Lighthouse Loop
This is flat terrain with gently rolling hills of approximately
22miles. Weather indicates humidity with temperatures ranging 88 to
93. Hopefully a cool breeze off the water will help keep the bugs
to a minimum. Sunscreen, bug spray as well as supply of water is
strongly encouraged. And it should be great photo opportunities.
Families and friends are welcome to join. It is a social ride with
some of us on Bike Friday's and other various intriguing bikes of
all sorts. We will meet at the Newburyport Commuter Rail Station.
Parking fee $2 may be in effect. Plan to meet at 8:30am. and enjoy a
leisure ride before the temperature and humidity maximizes and
before the sun/beach families get out their chairs. I am not sure
what the schedule is for this time of year for the
commuter/Amtrak/or buses to this area.
Although on bikes, there might be an additional fee for entering
the Wildlife Refuge area on Island Road. Recommend bringing a few
extra dollars with you.
Directions:
Via Interstate 128 to Interstate 95
Merge onto I-95 N via the ramp on the LEFT toward
SALISBURY/PORTSMOUTH NH.
Take the SCOTLAND RD exit- EXIT 56- toward NEWBURY/NEWBURYPORT.

of the pack here: http://www.bikefriday.com/bf/ny2005
I noticed Anna's ride was missing from this board, so I am posting it
for her.

Subject: Bike Friday ride this Sunday, April 24th
Hi Folks,
Spring is officially here. The weather for Sunday, April 24th looks
good for a ride.
Some Bike Friday folks have been riding off and on for impromptu
rides; but they promise to not be speed demons and leave us slower
ones in the dust.
We will plan to meet in Carlisle at Great Brook Farm. This location
offers the
opportunity to visit the animals and get ice-cream, hot chocolate, etc.
Directions at end of e-mail; but first a message of encouragement.
Please forward this to anyone that you think may want to join in this easy
pace bike friendly ride. A Bike Friday is not necessary; just a bike with
running parts, a helmet, water bottle and desire to make the day count.
Another message of encouragement is as follows:
Any of you or if you know others that have a bike route that they
would like to share some 4th Sunday of the month, I will post it to
the list. It is suggested that the meeting area for the ride
for the ride be within a two hour ride from Boston via car. A
comfortable ride is between
20 and 25 miles. It can be more or less dependent upon the terrain
and also may have options for longer with bail out points. Send
suggestions to baggcyclists@...
The ride for Sunday, April 24th will be led through the country roads
of Concord, Carlise,
by James V. He has more expertise at the right and left turns of
this area, but I will be there to make sure he gets them correct.
Thanks James in advance for the guidance and support.
Date: Sunday, April 24th, 2005
Place: Great Brook Farm, Carlise
Time: Meet at 1:30 pm.
Directions:
Via Rt. 3
1. Route 128 to exit 32A (Route 3 North)
2. Route 3 to Exit 28 (Treble Cove Road)
3. Go south/west on Treble Cove Road toward Carlisle
(approximately 1+ miles)
4. After crossing Route 4 (Nashua Road) turn right onto
West Street
(also known as North Road at the
Billerica/Carlisle town line)
5. Drive west on West Street/North Road about 2.2 miles
to Great Brook Farm.
6. Turn right into the parking lot.
Option two:
1. Route 128 to Exit 31 B;
(Routes 4 & 225 north & west)
2. Follow Route 225 all the way to Carlisle Center
(past Hanscom Air Force Base, a
cemetery, a shop plaza, etc.)
(past where Route 62 joins 4/225
from the right at 1.5 miles)
(past where Route 62 leaves 4/225;
stay right as Rt. 62 goes left)
3. Stay on Route 225 (you turn left) as Route 4
bears off to the right;
4. At the Rotary (small grassed island at Carlisle Center,
take right onto Lowell Street;
5. After about 1 1/2 miles, turn right onto North Road
(there is a sign for the Ice Cream shop);
6. The parking lot is about 1/4 mile on your left.
My cell phone will be on at 12:30
Of Note: Last month's ride: Where were you guys? Yes there was snow
on the bike path; but we did some alternative routes. A great day.
One in the group rode towing a trailer with 25 pounds of brick.
Another took a maiden voyage on her bike; she only did 105 K. It was
her first time since last fall. Good job Pam. James did ? number of
miles as he did alot of extra looping miles to keep checking on me.
Myself, I only did about 17.5miles; but did get to the car by dark.
Also of Note: Look for me at the Five Boro Ride.
I might be on a Bike Friday or
I may be on the Moo Terry bike with the clothes to match.
New York has grown accustomed to looking for me in this attire.
And lastly, plan ahead for next months 4th Sunday of the month ride.
Plans are: Scenic Cape Ann/Gloucester area.
Let's continue those impromptu rides as well as this 4th Sunday of the
month scheduled ride.
That's all folks. Place message in Save file.
See you on the trails soon.

.Please continue to read below about Lynette and the planned
presentation.
Lynette Chiang is an Australian-Chinese author and bicycle
world traveler, based in Eugene, Oregon.
THE HANDSOMEST MAN IN CUBA is a slide show and published book about
her 3-month solo self-supported bicycle tour through Cuba at the
turn of
the millennium.Lynette traveled and stayed among the people on a
bare-bones
& bucket-bath basis, so this is not a romanticized travel memoir,
but
as one reviewer put it, "a song of praise for the humanity and
simple
decency of Cubans
Three reasons why this is a good show:
1) CONTROVERSIAL: Cuba is hot - Americans can't legally go there,
and
many have said the book if not slide show were so compelling
it 'saved
them the airfare'. Read the Handsomest Man Review Forum here:
http://www.galfromdownunder.com/cuba
2) INSPIRATIONAL: Lynette is a lone woman traveling on a bicycle for
7 years
- there are plenty of gung-ho male adventurers, but no so many
women -
especially one's with a poor sense of direction like Lynette. Women
have
said the book made them want to get up and go.
3) JUST PLAIN COOL: The Bike Friday is the world's leading
performance
travel bicycle, custom made in Eugene, Oregon. A demo of this
folding
bike is always a crowd-pleaser.

The book was first published by Random House Australia in July 2003,
now available June 2004 through Small Wheel Press in the USA. It has
sold close to 4000 copies in Australia.

And notice to Plan Ahead for the September and October rides.
The B.A.G.G. (Boston Area Green Gear) Cyclist Bike Ride
When: Sunday, August 22nd
Where: Minute Man Bike Path/Bedford location
Time: 2:00 p.m.
Who: All are welcome. It is a mellow ride on paved bike path that

Plan ahead for:

September 26th---East Providence Bike Path.
Hope to see you on the trails. This is always a very easy paced
ride with time
for socialization. Children are welcome .. Helmets are required and
water strongly
encouraged.
Many thanks for the respsonses. I think the idea of a Pocket Tourist
with extra strong rims
and kevlar tires makes sense. I was biking in (Needham->Boston on my
old Bianchi Axis)
this a.m. and had a huge rear blowout when I ran over a nasty shard
of glass.
I am pretty close to buying a new bike (the bike shop people laugh at
me when I come in
for repairs, and the old bike is getting harder and harder to
maintain. Eventually, I will
probably use a multi-bike strategy (I intend to blow a lot of money
on bikes with my mid-
life crisis) but I am looking for a good all around bike to get me
through till then.
Is there a way to test these bikes under realistic conditions (e.g.
renting one for a week
and taking it on real commutes)?
thanks
robin
If you're a long time bicycle commuter, you probably have some
appreciation for a bike that performs well, and that is where the
Bike Friday will shine. I have owned a Dahon and two Bike Fridays
(just traded in my New World Tourist for a Crusoe). The Dahon was
one of their top-of-the-line models of a couple years ago: aluminum
frame, great components. Dahon definitely has great folding
technology -- you can fold their small-wheel bikes incredibly fast.
I had opted for an 8-speed, and that was a fine range for Boston.
However, the sizing of Dahons is awkward. Though their Web site
claims that their bikes fit a huge size range, they definitely don't
fit everybody in that range properly. Moreover, the wheelbase is
overly long (to accommodate their folding tech), which affects
handling. I've been cycle commuting for almost 20 years, and I took
two spills on the Dahon when it didn't behave like a "proper bike"
should.
The Bike Fridays are really nice to ride. They've simplified the
folding a bit on their newest models (no need to turn the front
wheel), but it is undeniably slower and more awkward to fold than the
Dahon. That said, I think you could get the process down pretty fast
(in the 1 minute time zone). For ruggedness, I don't think you have
too much to worry about. Small wheels are actually stronger than big
wheels, and you could customize in any way you like when your bike
design is worked out (for example, I have extra-strong rims and
Kevlar tires on my bike). For the frame, there are plenty of
options. I'm sure a New World Tourist frame would be sufficient, and
probably a Crusoe too, unless you're doing crazy bumpy riding
perhaps. My new Crusoe came in under 20 pounds (without pedals and
saddle), and it is a real delight to ride -- very responsive and
speedy.
For carrying on the T, you'll definitely need a bag. The bags (we
have one for our Bike Friday tandem) are pretty easy and fast to
use. Keep in mind that your bundle will not be fun to negotiate
through a packed Green Line trolley, but it will definitely be
possible to take it with you.
Good luck!
Fritz Knabe
I own a Bike Friday New World Tourist model. My decision to buy a Bike
Friday is different than yours. I wanted it so that I could bring it on
airplanes (more conveniently and more inexpessively than a full size bike).
That being said, I do have some opinions about Bike Friday bikes that
might be helpful.
First is, given that you have enough money, you can basically get anything
you want. You start by picking a model (20+ to choose from). Then you choose
a basic configuration for that model (2-10 to choose from). After that
you can upgrade or swap out any of the components. So you can custom pick
your gearing to suit your hilly commute. The Bike Friday website allows
you to pick the model and configuration. You then need to work with a sales
rep to upgrade or swap components.
You may want to consider the total weight of the bike if you are going
to be carrying it on public transportation. I bought a chrome moly frame.
When I put the bike, along with other bike accessories, in its suitcase
it weighed over 40 pounds! You too will need to carry some accessories
(a mirror, a pump, a spare tube, tire irons; perhaps a rack, a lock, etc.).
One of my pet peeves with my Bike Friday is that the chain tends to
come off when I fold/unfold the bike. There is, however, a $15 gizmo that
Bike Friday sells to help keep the chain on the chain ring when folding/unfolding
the bike. I have not tried it but I would definately order it if I regularly
carried my bike on public transportation.
Other than the weight of the bike and the chain derailing when folding
I absolutely love my Bike Friday! I ordered nice low gears and was able
to successfully cycle the Tuscan hills last Fall.
I will forward you an email concerning a Bike Friday club ride this
Sunday in Woburn. I won't be there. But it will give you an opportunity
to pick the brains of other Bike Friday owners and perhaps you can take
a spin on one of their bikes and see a folding demonstration. I rode with
the group before I bought my Bike Friday and I found their information
to be helpful.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask. If you want to see
or try my bike you are welcome to. I'm about 5'4" and live in Tewksbury.

Depending on the weather and what I have to carry, I either bike in, bike to the

a folder on the T so I could, for example, bike in in the morning and ride the train home

train, etc. There is a guy I see who does this with a little Strida folder, but there is no
way I could make it up the hills to my home on that one. Another alternative would be an electric
folder, like the Dahon Roo EL. Overall, though, I think for me the techonology of electrics
is not quite there yet and I'd rather wait a few years. I have been thinking about a Bike
Friday, but in order to work for me it would have to be fast enough for the Boston-Needham
commute, rugged enough for the potholes, geared enough for the hills, but small
enough to be stuffed into a bag and smuggled aboard the Green Line. Has anyone done this
that could tell me if it works?

82 Haverhill Street

Just for the planning of food, let me know if you are planning on
attending. However,
please do not hesitate to show if the opportunity arises at the last
minute. It is
a "Show and Go" Enjoy the camaraderie event with options:

My home phone is:
978-664-0474
cell: 617-909-0611 ( on at 1:30pm).
You do not need a Bike Friday to attend. If I recall, one person
bought a Bike Friday
shortly after the last time I offered the ride and social in North
Reading. This could become
a trend; so come out and enjoy the Spring and check out what
the "Little Wheels
make me fly" attitude is all about.
It was a great ride that five Bike Friday owners shared in the
Amesbury, Ma. area on Sunday, March 28th. Some felt that a
Hot Chocolate stand every few miles wuld have been an assett;
but the fellowhip and lack of rain was appreciated and kept
the heart warm.
Karen, from Durham, New Hampshire came and checked out the bikes and
hopes to join us on a ride soon. Bill has offered to let her
ride one of his spare Blue colored bikes. One ride and I know she
might be another Bike Friday owner.
Thanks Bill for organizing this trip and your good sense of direction
did get us back to the cars with plenty of sunlight to spare. Don't
toss those handy maps as the riders expressed a repeat of this route
later in the season.
Anna K.
Plan ahead for the next ride to be
Sunday, April 25th in the Carlise, Ma. area. It will be on country
roads in a place west of Boston.
If the ice-cream stand is open, there will also be hot chocolate.
Details at later date.

Hello,
It was a great December ride this past Sunday followed by a nice
social time.
Six riders rode off from IRP under the guidance of Bill Redford.
Thanks Bill.
Another three joined at 82 Haverhill Street for the camaraderie.
Although this type of weather is great for the rides, I still hope
for ICE for the
January 25th ride. If ICE cooperates, riding at Horn Pond will be a
delight . I believe one rider will have his studded Bike Friday
tires make an appearance. Perhaps we can get a group photo showing
our New England endurance in all type of weather.
Plan for Sunday, December 25th at 1:30 pm. and think ICE.
Happy trails and traveling for 2004.
More details later.
Thanks to all of you for joining in these events/rides this past
year. My sense of direction could not organize these rides without
the help of my co-organizer. Thanks Bill.
Don't let those little wheels get cobwebs on them. See you soon.
Anna K.
Not only will this month's Bike Friday ride be scheduled for the 5th
Sunday, (not routine 4th),
but it may also might not fall into the routine type of ride.
Plans are for the "Minuteman" Bike Path's unpaved/off road
and............(to be determined)
The ride will consist of combination of packed dirt/gravel, paved, and
road.
If you have knobbies or semi-knobbies, you may decide to put them on;
but we will travel on only areas that accommodate all the Bike Friday
wheels. Pedaling a little harder to make those
little wheels fly will help burn off the turkey calories.
Exact route will depend upon weather conditions for that week.
Plan on 12 to 17 miles of riding with some being a mystery at this
point. Nobody will be left behind or allowed to get lost. All will
return to place of origin.
Date: Sunday, November 30, 2003
