Mike,
I asked the same question when I saw the results and, since we lack any written policy for such cases, have discussed it with Michael Boot (our tournament director).
My conclusion, having listened to his arguments, was that it's not a bad idea after all to have a simple policy saying that all matches that could not be finished because of one player, for whatever reason, are considered losses for that player. Such a policy might seem unfair in cases like Joe Ching's (where he left because of a broken paddle), but it prevents discussions whether different reasons fo not playing are acceptable or not. And, after all, our club rating is not deadly serious and a small rating compensation to those players (like you) who were not given the chance to play the player who left, feels reasonable. I'm also sure that Joe Ching very soon will regain his lost rating points.
This does not mean, however, that I don't consider this issue worth further discussion. Maybe we should at least write down the policy we are using.
Finally I suggest to continue this and other future non-urgent discussions in the new guestbook on our website www.berkeleytabletennis.com, in order not to bother everyone on the mailing list.
