Simon,
If you have access to a SMAW (stick) arc welding rig, you can
sometimes find something called a 'carbon arc torch'. It's a handheld
piece that holds two carbon arc rods in diagonal alignment to each
other, with the positive lead connected to one and the negative to the
other. When the power is applied and the rods are brought together, an
arc is started. As the rods are drawn apart, a flame is created, and
can be used in lieu of a gas flame to braze, solder, heat-treat,
anneal, and do all the same sorts of things one would do with a gas torch.
