Re: [bentechriders] Wheel Size

I ride a SWB EZ Speedster with a 20" front and a 26 x 1.5 rear. However, I
recently swapped the rear out with a 700 rim using a 700 x 25 tire @ 100psi. I
was looking for the least resistance and the largest rear wheel I can find with
the smallest tire. I am now going to stay with this configuration and will get a
new rim with a mechanical disk brake setup.
(for my fellow EZ riders, there is a mount on the rear frame for a fender. the
700 x 25 just fits without hitting that mount. if you go with anything larger,
you would have to cut this mount. Also your rear brakes will not work. Mine
never worked right anyway which is why I am going to the mechanical disk).
As far as formulas for wheel size, I am sure they are out there. The general
rule is the larger the wheel, the faster the bike will go depending on the
gearing. Of course, the less resistance, the better. The higher psi results in a
smaller footprint and easier rolling which is why our road bike riding peers use
them.
I spoke with a gentleman riding a RANS Stratus LWB that was using pedel clips
and a windshield. He told me he will not ride without his clips as the
performance was so much better.
I want to go to the clips for my rig and perhaps go from a 48 to a 52 tooth
front ring. I am also considering longer pedal arms but have not read up on
whats out there. I live in south Florida so everything is flat and I am always
on the 48 tooth fornt ring. I have never used the other 2 rings.
The increase in performance is noticable, The lower resistance just makes it
easier to accelerate and maintain speed. The number one rule I never break is
check the air pressure before you ride. I max the pressure on the front and the
rear. Even a few pounds low will result in a noticable loss of performance. If I
can find a smaller front tire with a higher psi, I will install that as well.
Maybe someone has some info on that.
Good luck with your mods.

I have been riding a 700c wheel on my upright frame for a few years
and have not seen any used on the Recumbents. I have seen 650's and
mountain wheels. Some with the 27in stuff. But none with 700's. Is
there a science to the selection to the wheels? Speed differances?
I was wondering about building my own SWB bike and was wondering about
selection. Maybe using the 700c wheels with Disk brakes, I want to use
it as a to/from work bike.

Thanks
Alan

I think that there have been recumbents built with every wheel size and combination available. As far as I can see, the main considerations with wheel size and...

This makes sense. Thanks for the response. I am still leaning towards the 700 wheels, only because I have them. I got rid of my 650's a while back. Has anyone...

Sure, you can use 700c wheels on a bent. Here are a few bents that use 700c wheels: http://www.easyracers.com/ordering.htm http://www.lightningbikes.com ...
