After 16 years of bike commuting on my trusty road bike, compressed
cervical disks and arthritis in my neck have become a major source
of pain. I am hoping that switching to a recumbent will allow me to
stay on the road. After looking at the Bentech web site, I have
ordered plans for both the LWB and SWB models. I am currently
planning to build a SWB USS model.
I have some questions about the bikes and would appreciate opinions
from anyone who has built a Bentech and/or ridden same:
1. The web site says that the plans are for BMX & mountain bike type
wheels. Is there a problem using road bike type wheels on a
recumbent? Are there real advantages to the fatter tires?
2. For the hills around my home, I definitely want a triple chain
ring. However, how many speeds are common for the rear? Should the
sprockets be about the same as for my road bike (11-28 I think)?
3. What type of shifters work best. I really like the old Shimano
RSX integral brake lever shifters on my road bike. But they might
not work as well with a recumbent.
4. How do recumbents do in wet and/or snowy weather? I worry about
getting my back and butt drenched with cold, dirty, water or slush
from the road. Is that a problem? If so, how can one avoid or
minimize the problem?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.
