What a pity that I couldn't be in the sumo chat room today...
it would have been too good to rub it in Kintamayama's face - very
humbly of course ;-) especially since Kintamayama has been the idea
man for my shikona.
I fear tomorrow I can't be in the chat room too. I have a date in
the morning.

Well I must say that all of the canings have worked. Aside from the bruises
and splinters on the butts of all of my rikishi, they are in prime
condition. We will push forward and and bring our sumo to a higher level. I
like the idea of the triple "shock". Maybe I will try the cattle prod
tomorrow to keep my boys in line.
With my psychic abilities I saw Tochiazuma beating Takanohana a mile away.
Actually about 33 km's away but who's counting. I predict Taka will by kyujo
by the end of the week. Sad to say because he is one of my favourites.

able to (gasp) move forward effectively (hyperventilate). I will try to do
my best tomorrow (all of the above)."
Actually, I thought I had lost thanks to Kotonowaka (my number 1 bench
rikishi) until I re-checked and saw that the Sekiwake-Ozeki had chosen
Dejima. No one is more shocked than myself.

Hi Josh & All,
Not only can you indeed change your squad everyday (if you like); It is
even
advisable to DEFINITELY change your squad every day... Especially if
(some of) your Rikishi happen to fighting each other on a particular
day. :-)

Greeting from a Sumo fan from the Netherlands,
Jan "Chijanofuji" de Veen
The Sumo Colosseum - http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/6136/
Dear BS-ers,
Just a couple of clarifications. YES, you can choose your line-up up to
3 pm (Japan time) on any day. If you don't send in a new line-up, or it
arrives late (after 3 pm), then I will use your previous day's line-up.
ALWAYS send your new line-ups direct to my personal email address
(jezz@...) and NOT to the bench_sumo@onelist.com
(I will endeavour to send out each day's finalised teams before 4 pm
Japan time) The advantage of this is that if one of your star rikishi
turns out to be nursing a major injury - or pulls out all together (no
subs in this game!) - then you can confine him to last position on your
bench.
I received a couple of entries after the dead-line, and after a lot of
thinking, I have decided not to let them join this time around. This
was because I had already spent a couple of hours getting everything
sorted out - and sending the stuff out to you guys -, and if I was to
include them, then I would have a lot more work to do - and it sets a
dangerous precedent for future BS games, when the number of participants
may be bigger!
You might be wondering at the schedule.... well as there are 18 of us
taking part, it means that you will be meeting everyone bar two. Unlike
in real sumo, where there are the 40 (plus whoever they drag up from
Juryo), this makes the scheduling a bit night-marish! So with the top
two rikishi (the Sekiwake-Ozeki's) not meeting the bottom two (M6s), it
means that everyone else has to! So there are some unfortunate gaps,
where some of the higher ranked rikishis will not get to go up against
all the Komusubis and Sekiwakes - as they would in real sumo. I have
drawn up a schedule (which can have a couple of minor changes if
necessary) for the whole 15 days, with the sanyaku matches being
scheduled for the end. I will only reveal the schedule a day in advance
(and I promise not to peep!), to keep the excitement going. Also Jejima
always picks his team BEFORE viewing his opponents team for any day
(again you'll have to trust me on this!).
I have changed the nature of this mailing list, from a moderated one
(where I have to approve ALL emails sent by anyone else other than me)
to a un-moderated one. However, please restrict any emails to the
subject/nature of the game! (BUT new team line-ups too go direct to me)
Anybody beating one of the two Sekiwake-Ozeki will be expected (but not
obliged) to send in an after match interview. Similarly, anyone with a
long string of wins and a good chance of getting the Yusho would also be
expected to send in a few words.... Also if you win a match with
maximum (14) points please say something... (or if you narrowly win a
tight match etc). Or if you lose for several days in a row, it would be
interesting to hear what you plan to do, to change your luck.... Just
try and get into the persona of your cyber-rikishi!
Apologies to Haraiboshi for being thrown at the two Sekiwake-Ozekis on
the first couple of days - but well else can you expect from being
ranked at M1???

Doh! First day and I draw the top ranked Sekiwake-Ozeki. Such goes life at
the meatgrinder.
Looks interesting, guys! I noticed that the "Musashimaru, Chiyotaikai,
Kaio, Musoyama, Tochiazuma" seems to be the most popular first string squad
(with 3!), with slight variations such as the "Takanohana, Chiyotaikai,
Kaio, Musoyama, Tochiazuma", and the "Musashimaru, Chiyotaikai, Tosanoumi,
Tochiazuma" squads also popular. And then there's my "Musashimaru,
Chiyotaikai, Kaio, Wakanosato, Chiyotenzan" squad (with Musoyama and
Tochiazuma in reserve...).
I was also happy to see Wakanosato on 8 of 18 squads. I'm glad I'm not the
only one who thinks this young, hard working rikishi will go far. I was the
only one to put him on my first squad, though...
I just to make a quick rules check with Jejima; we change our squads
everyday (if we like), right?
Good luck!

I was making the banzuke (with those who entered last basho's trial
game, getting the top rankings), when I decided that it is a bit stupid
giving any cyber-rikishi a Yokozuna or Ozeki rank, as they haven't been
earned! However, I want to keep this game as true to the real thing as
possible, and in the real thing, you HAVE to have 2 Ozekis.....
Therefore, as a solution, I have come up with the stop-gap rank of
Sekiwake-Ozeki. This is to fill the Ozeki ranks, but is not the
semi-permanent type (as in REAL sumo), but will be lost with a losing
record. The real rank of Ozeki will exist, as soon as a cyber-rikishi
has done something which even vaguely warrants it....!

Yes another Sumo internet game!
Jejima here!
After the very succesful trial run during the second half of the last
basho, I am hoping to run a full scale version of Bench Sumo (otherwise
known as the BS game ;-)
The rules are as follows:-
1. You pick a squad of ten rikishi comprising of exactly; 1 Yokozuna, 1
Ozeki, 1 Sekiwake, 1 Komusubi and 6 non-sanyaku makanouchi rikishi.
2. For each day of the basho, before 3 pm Japan time, you email me a
team of 5 rikishi (from your squad of ten) - in the case that you DON'T
send in a new line-up, it will assumed that you are sticking with the
previous day's line-up. You also put your remaining five rikishi in
order of 'reserves' on the 'bench' (hence the name of the game). The
first in your team is worth 4 pts for a win, the next 2 are each worth 3
pts, and the the other 2, 2 pts apiece.
3. Each day you will be competing against another cyber-rikishi (I am
going to do the match-ups as close to the real thing as possible, ie
there will be an Ozeki show-down on the last day). If you score more
points than your opponent, then you get a shiroboshi (win) for that day,
else a kuroboshi (loss). If you both have the same number of points,
then your first rikishi's results on the bench will be examined,
followed by the 2nd rikishi and so on. In the unlikely case that you
are still equal after going through all five rikishi on the bench, then
the results of your 4 pter, followed by your first 3 pter and so on in
your team will be looked at. IF (highly unlikely) you are still tied
after all that, then the youngest rikishi in either squad which was
victorious that day will secure the win.
4. Each day, I will endeavour to send out an email to all those taking
part with the finalised teams before 4 pm (Japan time), so that you can
see exactly who is in your cyber-rikishi's opponent's team for that day,
before the day's matches start. I will also try and get the official
results out by about 7 pm, also daily. All cyber-rikishi schedules will
be announced two days in advance (like the real thing! ;-)
5. Entries must be in by Friday September 10th, 6 pm (Japan time).
6. The banzuke order for this game will be decided (apart from the ten
cyber-rikishi who entered the trial run last basho, who will be given
the top spots for this tournament - if they send in a team in, in time),
on a first come, first served basis. So the faster you send in your
squad, the higher ranked you are likely to be!
7. Any questions, email me directly!
8. Please cut and paste the following entry form with your squad, and
email directly to me (jezz@...)

are your expectations for this cyber-basho?"
Good luck!
Jejima
Quietly away from the main Sumo ML, there has been a small
mini-tournament going on over the last seven days of the basho between
10 cyber-rikishi. This game is known as 'Bench-Sumo' (or the BS game
;-), and each of the participants picked a squad of ten rikishi, from
which they could put out a team of five on any one day, one rikishi
being worth 4 pts for a win, two being worth 3 pts each, and the other
two, 2 pts each. Each cyber-rikishi would then compete each day with
another cyber-rikishi. If they had equal scores, then the results of
their first rikishi on the bench would be considered, then the second
and so on. This was surprisingly a VERY fun game ;-) and hopefully for
the next basho, there will be a full scale Bench-Sumo tournament.
Anyway the last day's results, and final positions are as follows:-
Day Seven (day fifteen) - Sunday - results
Philanomi 7 was beaten by Jejima 11
Yubiquitoyama 12 over-came Chijanofuji 10

appears in the messages that I send around 4 pm ;-)
All the best,
Jejima
Well no-one got a perfect 14 today. This was largely due to Musoyama
surprising everybody and losing. In fact most people only had about two
of their rikishi notch up wins today. Interestingly (for me, anyway), a
couple of bouts were decided by the rikishi on the bench (after being
even score with the picked 'team'), both times going to the second
rikishi on the bench!
Anyway,
Results....
Day Two (day ten) - Tuesday - results
Maeden 9 spanked Tabehodaiyama 3
Yubiquito 6 narrowly beat Philanomi 6 (decided by second rikishi on the
bench)
Nomihodaiyama 7 narrowly lost to Jejima 7 (also decided by the second
rikishi on the bench)
Chijanofuji 6 lost to Myobudani 9

You have until 3.30 pm Japan time Wednesday, to change your line-up from
today's slate for a different one tomorrow (if you so choose) - as
Kintayama has already done. You can change your team as often as you
want
before the dead-line - as Maeden did today (3 selections before he got
the winning combination). However, to make it easier for me, (to copy
and
paste) can you please use the following format, if possible.... and
don't
forget to arrange your bench in your desired order. As showed today, it
can
be important!
Shikona
4 Rikishi A 3 Rikishi B 3 Rikishi C 2 Rikishi D 2 Rikishi E

Maeden: I write this now so it will reach you ahead of time before our
bout.
What ever our differences have been to me the GREAT thing about sumo
is respectibility. I failed this with you and I hope is some way to
change this.
I want to wish you luck in our matchup and in the entire bench sumo
contest.

Well, an exciting day 1. No-one needed to call on their bench rikishi
to decide bouts. Chijanofuji has the distinction of the first (and so
far the only) cyber-rikishi to get a perfect 14 pts from their out-field
team. What a bugger that s/he was up against Jejima that day....

Just to clarify... The one-list mailing list, is just to make it easier
for me to send results and new-match-ups and other stuff to everyone (I
only have to type one address, rather than nine). The whole game is
being worked out on low-tech scraps of paper! To change your starting
line-up (from your squad of 10), please email direct to my real email
address, namely
jezz@...
Don't worry about the onelist website etc, as there is nothing there!
All the best, and good luck for tomorrow....
