The Phenomenon of the One-Time Komusubi (OTK)
(by Heruwejima)

*   Introduction

This analysis deals with the question: What separates those rikishi who make it
to sanyaku
from those who don’t make it to sanyaku. More specifically I will have a look at
what I will
call one-time komusubis (OTKs). So, let us first define the notion of an OTK:

Def. 1:
An one-time komusubi (OTK) is a rikishi who’s highest career rank is komusubi
and who
made it to this rank exactly once.

Now, one might ask why to write a whole article about such a specific notion.
Well, there are
two reasons:
* During last basho one of the most typical OTK of all time has retired,
namely
Hamanoshima (and not too long ago another typical OTK has retired:
Oginishiki); but the
     main reason is the following:
* There are many OTKs! And that phenomenon needs some explanation.

If we have a look at the rikishi that are presently still active, 9 out of 10
(90%) rikishi with
komusubi as their highest career rank are OTKs!! The only exeption is
Takamisakri (a very
special rikishi in many ways!) who made it to komusubi twice.
For the following I will not only look at rikishi that are still active, but at
all those that became
sekitori for the first time after 1/1984 (that’s the time when my personal
statistics begin;
whether my theses are also compatible with earlier statistical data I don’t
know). Here a table
with all those rikishi with komusubi as their highest career rank during that
time:

Komusubi (45,2%)

Asahiyutaka 24 3 8. 44,7%
Chiyotenzan (x) 22 (1) 1 4. 44,3% OTK
Daishoho 33 (1) 3 10. 46,0%
Daizen 35 1 14. 44,8% OTK
Hamanoshima 44 1 5. 44,4% OTK
Iwakiyama (x) 10 1 7. 53,4% OTK
Kaiho (x) 35 (1) 1 22. 46,5% OTK
Kakizoe (x) 5 1 4. 52,0% OTK
Kenko 27 (1) 2 15. 44,7%
Kotoinazuma 65 1 43. 45,1% OTK
Kyokudozan 47 (1) 3 23. 46,1%
Kyokushuzan (x) 47 1 4. 44,7% OTK
Mainoumi 36 1 19. 45,6% OTK
Misugisato 53 3 5. 46,2%
Naminohana 18 1 8. 43,3% OTK
Oginishiki 45 (2) 1 25. 45,4% OTK
Ryogoku 32 4 3. 46,3%
Shimotori (x) 13 1 12. 48,9% OTK
Takamisakari (x) 16 2 6. 48,5%
Takanofuji 33 1 26. 43,2% OTK
Tochinohana (x) 14 1 4. 44,2% OTK
Toki (x) 34 (1) 1 31. 46,4% OTK
Tomoefuji 17 1 10. 48,9% OTK
Tomonohana 15 (1) 1 4. 46,2% OTK
Wakanoyama (x) 31 (1) 1 16. 44,5% OTK

Legend: Those rikishi that are still active are marked with a (x). The first
number gives the
number of bashos the rikishi competed in makuuchi (with the number of kyujo
makuuchi
bashos in parantheses). The second one is the number of tournaments in the rank
of komusubi.
The third one indicates in which makuuchi basho the rikishi reached the rank of
komusubi for
the first time. And the last number is the career makuuchi winning percentage.

2. Comparison I: Komusubi vs. Sekiwake

In order to understand a bit better why there are so many OTK we will first
compare this
group of komusubi with the group of those rikishi that made it to sekiwake (but
not to ozeki or
yokozuna):

Sekiwake

Akinoshima 12 15 50,3%
Hayateumi (x) 1 0 48,9%
Kotofuji 1 1 46,5%
Kotogaume 12 6 48,7%
Kotomitsuki (x) 9 (1) 2 59,3%
Kotonishiki 21 13 53,4%
Kotonowaka (x) 2 7 50,8%
Kyokutenho (x) 3 3 48,4%
Mitoizumi 4 7 48,8%
Takanowaka (x) 1 (1) 2 49,9%
Takatoriki 15 11 50,2%
Tamakasuga (x) 1 2 45,4%
Tamanoshima (x) 1 1 49,8%
Terao 7 6 45,4%
Tochinonada (x) 2 5 48,3%
Tochinowaka 7 10 47,0%
Tosanoumi (x) 6 13 50,8%
Wakanosato (x) 12 8 56,1%
Wakashoyo 1 3 43,8%

Legend: The table contains the information about number of makuuchi tournaments
in the
rank of komusbi, number of tournaments at the rank of sekiwake and career
winning
percentage in makuuchi.

Whereas most of those from the komusubi group made it to sanyaku only once,
allmost all
from the sekiwake group made it to sanyaku several times (the only exception is
Hayateumi).
This leads to our first thesis:

Thesis 1:
If you are strong enough to make it to sanyaku more than once you will generally
become a
sekiwake.

Our second thesis is not all surprising:

Thesis 2:
Those who make it to sekiwake are generally significant stronger rikishi than
those who make
it only to komusubi.

Thesis 2 can be backed up with some statistical data: If we have a look at the
career winning
percentages in makuuchi (CWPM) the average CWPM for the komusubi group is 46,2%,
whereas the average CWPM for the sekiwake group is 49,6% which is definitely
significantly
higher.
Before we continue with a comparison of the komusubi group with those rikishi
that didn’t
make it to sanyaku at all, we will have a closer look at the sekiwake group.
I think it makes sense to distinguish two kinds of sekiwake, namely the stronger
ones from the
weaker ones:

Def. 2:
A strong sekiwake is a rikishi that not only makes it several times to sanyaku
but is also strong
enough to reach kachi kochi there and stay in sanyaku for several consecutive
tournaments.
Indicators for strong sekiwake are generally: 1) a CWPM above 50%; 2) more than
10
tournaments at the rank of sekiwake or more than a total of 15 tournaments in
sanyaku; and 3)
he at least once comes close to an ozeki promotion.

Def. 3:
A weak sekiwake is a rikishi who is strong enough to make it to sanyaku several
times but
who is not strong enough to reach kachi kochi there and thus in general doesn’t
stay in
sanyaku for several consecutive tournaments.

The only sekiwake who doesn’t fit in one these two groups is Hayateumi. More on
him later
on!

3. Comparison II: Komusubi vs. Regular Maegashira

Now I will compare the group of komusubi with those who didn’t make it to
sanyaku, or more
specifically with those rikishi that compete in makuuchi for quite some time
without ever
reaching a sanyaku rank. To become more precise I define the notion of a regular
maegashira:

Def. 3:
A regular maegashira is a rikishi who competes in makuuchi without ever reaching
the
sanyaku ranks.

Here the table with all regular maegashira during the time under consideration:

Regular Maegashira (45,2%)

Aminishiki (x) M1 23 46,8%
Aogiyama M1 36 (2) 41,5%
Asanosho M2 31 (1) 46,2%
Asanowaka (x) M1 52 44,4%
Daishi M3 23 43,2%
Daishoyama M2 22 46,5%
Enazakura M1 26 44,9%
Ganyu M1 23 42,5%
Hamanokuni M1 24 45,7%
Higonoumi M1 51 (2) 44,5%
Kasugafuji M1 42 45,9%
Kiraiho M4 25 47,2%
Kirinishiki M2 32 (2) 46,2%
Kitakachidoki M3 48 (1) 46,0%
Kotobeppu M1 25 (1) 43,9%
Kotoryu (x) M1 44 (2) 47,3%
Kushimaumi M1 35 46,5%
Minatofuji M2 45 (1) 44,9%
Oginohana M2 26 43,9%
Otsukasa (x) M4 21 43,2%
Shikishima M1 27 (1) 43,4%
Tokitsuumi (x) M3 33 (2) 48,4%
Toyonoumi M1 30 46,4%

Legend: The table contains information about highest career rank, number of
bashos in
makuuchi and CWPM.

The first remarkable thing is that most of the regular maegashira made it up to
maegashira 1
and that every regular maegashira made at at least once to the top maegashira
ranks (M4 at
worst). This leads us to our next thesis:

Thesis 3:
Every rikishi who is strong enough to compete in makuuchi for a considerable
time (for
example for more than 20 tournaments) will at least reach the region of the top
maegashira
ranks.

The next thesis might be really surprising:

Thesis 4:
Those rikishi that make it to komusubi as their highest career rank are not
stronger than
regular maegashira!

If I make such a claim I have to have some statistical backing. And here it is:
Above we had
calculated the average CWPM for the komusubi group as 46,2%. If we calculate the
average
CWPM for the regular maegashiras we get 45,2%. Even if this isn’t much of a
difference one
could argue that it is at least a whole percent, a significant difference
contradicting thesis 4.
But we must have as closer look! In the komusubi group the three rikishi with
the best CWPM
(Iwakiyama, Kakizoe, Shimotori) are still active rikishi in an early stage of
their career. I
think we can expect from each of these three to make it to sekiwake soon (so,
they maybe
won’t belong for long to the komusubi group). Thus, maybe it makes sense to
recalculate the
average CWPM for the komusubi group again and only include those rikishi that
already have
competed in more than 20 makuuchi bashos (as we did with the maegashira). And
what do we
get? 45,2%: exactly the same value as for the regular maegashiras! So, I think
thesis 4 is
basically correct.
Now the question arises: If those who make it to komusubi as their highest
career rank are not
significantly stronger than regular maegashira, why do they reach a higher rank?
The answer
is given in thesis 5:

Thesis 5:
Those rikishi that make it to komusubi as their highest career rank simply had
more banzuke
luck than regular maegashira!

So, basically it is not a difference in strength but more a difference in luck
that separates these
two groups. Now we can come back to Hayateumi, the exception in the sekiwake
group. Well,
Hayateumi is in some sort a typical OTK who ‘by accident’ (or better: by a lot
of luck of
banzuke; his promotion to sekiwake followed a 9-6 record at M2!) made it to
sekiwake.
So fine, so good. But there is still one question to address. Why have so many
rikishi this
banzuke luck they need to reach komusubi only once in their career? Well, here
the statistical
data are much less clear and the following is a bit speculative: If we have
another look at the
komusubi table we see that most of the rikishi (14/25) made it the rank of
komusubi for the
first time within the first 10 makuuchi tournaments of their career.

Thesis 6:
In general for a rikishi who isn’t strong enough to reach sanyaku on a regular
basis it is easier
to reach the rank of komusubi early in his career.

Why is this so? Well, my guess is that if a new rikishi makes it to higher
maegashira for the
first time he is still a bit unknown to the established rikishi in the higher
regions of the
banzuke. This has some surprise value and this might help to get a small kachi
kochi in
higher maegashira and make it to komusubi. Later on, his strengths and
weaknesses are much
better known and he will generally end with a make koshi when ranked in higher
maegashira.
Of course there are quite some rikishi in the komusubi group who reached their
highest rank
rather late in their career. I think, here we can discriminate two groups again
(this now is
really highly speculative I must admit!):
* good technicians who remain dangerous for the established rikishi at the top
of the
banzuke even if they are already around for quite some time and well known:
for example
     Kaiho, Kotoinazuma, Mainoumi, Oginishiki
* technically limited rikishi who got (besides some banzuke luck) some support
in form of
being member of a strong heya (which means that they hadn’t to fight their
heya-mates
and had a slightly easier schedule in higher maegashira than others): for
example
Wakanoyama (from Musashigawa heya) and Toki (from Takasago heya).
Of course, there still remain several exceptions to these observations but I am
not able to
answer all questions! The end

This was Heruwejima’s first sumo analysis. I hope you liked it (and I hope my
English wasn’t
too bad and readable). If you wish I can write another sumo analysis before the
start of the
next basho.
Good luck to all for the various sumo games and enjoy a hopefully interesting
basho!!!

Yeehaw,

well, well, on shonichi of Natsu Basho I did not even know that this
mailing list exists. Heck, I'll give it a try. Jejima, you can assign
me as a gyoji for days 7 and/or 8. This is to express my gratitude
for the great D2D gyoji comments that I had the pleasure to read back
in May.

Cheers,
Budinishiki

Dear Bench Sumoans,

After much deliberation, and with some sadness, I would like to
announce my retirement from the great game of Bench Sumo, as well
as the other games in which I am participating. Over the last
couple of basho I realized that I have lost that spark of interest
that made playing these games so much fun. When it stops being a
game, it's time to make that final walk up the hanamichi. For me,
that time is now.

I have many fond memories of Bench Sumo that I will always keep
with me. Meeting the Rijicho for the first time on the virtual
dohyo. Participating in two musubi-no-ichiban as a shin-Makuuchi
rikishi. Winning a Juryo yusho and two Makuuchi sansho. Seeing
my "koUhai" Gernobono-zeki promoted to Bench Yokozuna. Introducing
the "Three Tenors" to the Bench Sumo community. My first ginboshi.
Making it to the top Sekiwake slot. This is as close as it gets to
experiencing how a real rikishi must feel as he moves up the
banzuke. For this I'd like to thank Jejima for creating such a
fantastic game. Thanks to Bench Sumo, I've also had a chance to meet
some interesting folks (Gernobono, Takatamale, and Jakusotsu, to
name but a few), a very nice sidebar to playing the game itself.

Finally, I would like to apologize to my brethren and sistren in the
Sakura Ichimon for this rather abrupt announcement. I hope my
departure is not the proverbial straw that breaks the camel's back,
but I'm counting on the concept of a Japan-o-phile ichimon being
stronger than any one person. My heartfelt best wishes go out to all
Sakuranians for continued success on the Bench dohyo.

Cheers, Danjinoumi

Ahem!

Only the smallest division, Tameiki? Surely, along
with your ascension to Sakura-oyakata, you might be
willing to take on the Makuuchi or Makushita division
for a day, no? Ah, I remember those days I spent as a
pup in Sandanme: no cares in the world, happy to see
my shikona in print, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed -
unaware of the awesome responsibility that was to
befall me when Jejima said (I'm paraphrasing here),
"Kid - it's time to be a D2D gyoji. Go out there and
knock 'em dead!" Well, I didn't knock 'em dead. No
casualties, whatsoever. But I learned a very valuable
lesson: If a rikishi falls and no one is there to
report it, does it make a sound? Tameiki-oyakata! Rise
up! Show those Makuuchians, Makushitans and
Sandanmeans what we Juryoans already know! You are
IRON GYOJI!

Ahem. Thank you.

The preceding message was brought to you by Tongue 'n
Cheek Candies - stretching the taffy and the truth
since 2001...and by Cheeses of Nazareth - where the
Swiss isn't the only thing that's Holey.

Hi Jezz,
We are down in Phuket for the first week of the basho and after that even
back in Chiang Mai things re the new job look to be too busy to focus on
selecting pics...rather than take an absence I am setting up a simple
formula of daily picks which will be implemented with integrity by a
seasoned, trustworthy player, Jakusotsu.

Hope you find some refreshment in your own neck of the woods.

i'll be happy to take a couple of spots, three if you like (or maybe i should
say if you dare.) weekdays work better for me than weekends, if possible.

and a quick message to everybody else: if you you are hesitating to take gg
duties because you will look foolish or make mistakes, don't worry, you are very
unlikely to make more mistakes than i do. (see messages from me last basho for
reference.) i'm pretty sure i get at least a few things wrong (in spite of the
most honest of efforts) just about every time i gg, and i still keep coming back
for more. so don't make the richijo beg.

Sorry for the delay, but have been swamped recently....

Anyway, please send me your offers for day to day gyojiing. Please let me
know which day(s) you prefer, and if you have any preferences for divisions.
I know that some regular D2D gyojis will not be available this time
around, so please offer your services if at all possible.

All the best,

Jejima & all,

As I am available throughout the basho because I am taking a three week holiday
from work (and am
not going anywhere), I will finally be availabe for GG duty once more! If you
want you can give me 2
or 3 days as d2d GG on days of your own choice. If possible, I would like at
least one of those days
to be as Makuuchi GG... ;-)

Dear sumo gamers!

The banzuke is out, and it's that time again! You are all cordially
invited to participate in my three games, Sekitori-Toto,
Sekitori-Oracle and Sekitori-Quadrumvirate!

Don't be confused between Sekitori-Toto, Sekitori-Oracle, and
Sekitori-Quadrumvirate, they are all three different games, and all
well worthwhile playing

The objective of Sekitori-Toto and Sekitori-Oracle is, to try to
correctly predict the outcome of all bouts involving the 70 Sekitori at
the next basho.

In Sekitori-Oracle, you submit your picks BEFORE the basho begins,
guessing the win/loss records you expect each rikishi to have at the
end of the tournament (for example, Asashoryu 14-1, Takamisakari, 8-7,
etc.) - depending on how close you are to the actual outcome, you will
score points. Since last basho, this game is FULLY automated thanks to
Kashunowaka! You can now follow your picks day by day and see how the
leader board changes... amazing! Thanks, Kashunowaka. Check it out,
people! ;)

Sekitori-Toto is played DURING the basho. On all 15 days of the
tournament, you get to pick the 30 or so winners of the daily bouts
(or, if you are not sure who will win a bout, you can pick "X" for a
guaranteed half point!). This game was automated by Kofuji and has been
one of the most popular games around since then.

Both these games are a lot of fun, and are ideal for you to play
"first" amongst the other sumo prediction-type games out there, because
they will "force" you to consider the entire spectrum of Sekitori
before you narrow your choices down to come up with your selections in
the other games.

Both these games also feature smaller prize categories besides the
Yusho award, and a Nations' competition - so be sure to represent your
country proudly, and to help your team mates out in bringing the glory
home!

The third game, Sekitori-Quadrumvirate, features an exciting new game
idea, also involving all 70 rikishi in the top two divisions. Here you
pick four Sekitori each day (hence "Quadrumvirate"). If at least three
of them win their match, you also win. Easy? No, because you are only
allowed to pick each Sekitori ONCE during a basho... so choose wisely!
This game had its first successful official run last basho thanks to
flawless automation by Kashunowaka. Check it out, if you haven't
already!

Beginning from Haru Basho 2004, Sekitori-Toto offers nice PRIZES for
the Yusho winner, who will receive *three printed Tegata* of their
choice, and to the "Rookie of the Basho", who will receive *one printed
Tegata* of their choice. These exciting new prizes are courtesy of John
Gunning, a.k.a. Zenshoyusho's Rare Sumo Items for Sale on eBay (see his
items at http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?View...sort=3&rows=50)
So join in the fun, and who knows, you may win some Tegatas! :) And in
Sekitori-Toto, you are also playing for "cyber-medals" and an entry on
the prestigious Medals Presentation Page -
http://www.sekitori-toto.com/medals.html

On top of that, the Sekitori-Oracle Yusho winner gets a REAL trophy
sent to them! You can see what it looks like at
http://www.sekitori-oracle.com/gachincotrophy.gif !

Worth a try, isn't it?

IMPORTANT RULES NOTE: unlike in real sumo, "kosho" status will STILL be
given to players who miss ONE basho, but they MUST notify me of their
absence BEFORE SENSHURAKU. So, if you will be absent, please submit
your KOSHO request, else you will be given a 0-15 score. Kosho will of
course be given only "once in a row" - two absences in a row will
always result in a 0-15

You can reach all three games though the portal page at
http://www.sekitori.com - or individually, at:

Sekitori-Toto: http://www.sekitori-toto.com
Sekitori-Oracle: http://www.sekitori-oracle.com
Sekitori-Quadrumvirate: http://www.anasuya.com/4/

Pre-registration for Sekitori-Toto and Sekitori-Quadrumvirate is now
open. You can enter the basho at any time, even after it begins, but if
you can, you should pre-register for Sekitori-Toto and if you haven't
yet registered your shikona for Sekitori-Quadrumvirate, it also doesn't
hurt to do so now...

As for Sekitori-Oracle, it is now officially open for you to make your
entries!

So, I wish you good luck, and have fun playing!
Cheers
Zenjimoto
Sekitori-Toto, Sekitori-Oracle & Sekitori-Quadrumvirate Kyokai Rijicho

As we wait with anticipation for the beginning of Benchsumo's Jonidan
division in the upcoming basho, here is a review of some fellow cyber-
rikishi who began their careers in another era, when the Juryo
division was first formed in Benchsumo.

There were six basho between March 2000 and January 2001, when new
rikishi made their Benchsumo debut directly into the Juryo division.
58 cyber-rikishi and the Benchsumo drone made their Benchsumo debut
in this division. Where are the Juryo Debutantes now, around four
years after their careers began?

There are 18 Juryo Debutantes (31%) who have continued to play
Benchsumo, without having had any career breaks. 3 of these are now
Sanyaku rikishi, a further 8 hold Maegashira ranks, while 3 remain
within the Juryo division. A further 3 rikishi now reside in the
Makushita division and 1 Juryo Debutante valiantly continues doing
his Benchsumo within the Sandanme division. Derufidurono, the
Benchsumo drone, also now holds a rank in the Sandanme division.

Who are all these long-serving players of the game? See below for
details.

A further 14 cyber-rikishi (24%) have retired from their first
Benchsumo career since the beginning of 2002. 1 of these Juryo
Debutantes retired at a Sanyaku rank, 5 as Maegashira rikishi, 1 as a
Makushita rikishi, and 7 as Sandanme rikishi.

The other 26 Juryo Debutantes (45%) retired from their first
Benchsumo career prior to the beginning of 2002.

Hi Gamers!! (deepest apologies again to non-gamers..)

This one is the CHAIN GANG.
What is the "Chain Gang"? It's a Sumo-related game, based on a day by
day entry. This means you have to follow the ongoing tournament.
The good news is that all you have to do is guess one (1) winner of your
choice from all the bouts on a given day, Juryo and Makuuchi. Only one,
any one. You got it right? You advance to day 2 and pick again. It could
be the same rikishi, or anyone else. You got it wrong? Well, that was
the shortest game you ever played, because yer OUT!! No three strikes,
no yellow card, no "one more chance".. It's the end of the road.
Last human being standing wins. This means the game could theoretically
end on day 6. So what? The prize? A key-chain, of course...

IMPORTANT!!IMPORTANT!! YOU HAVE TO REGISTER TO PLAY, even if you've
played before!!

You will need to pick TWO default guys before the basho
starts for the days you don't/can't play, who cannot be changed.

((((((RULE CHANGE!!!))))))The defaults DO NOT include any Yokozunas or
Oozekis!!

There is a 5-TIME USE LIMIT PER BASHO for using a default, and you can
use him for three straight days only, though we don't think you'll get
very far using a default in this particular game. The reason for two
defaults is this:
KYUJO - When your default pick goes Kyujo, your second default pick
kicks in..

IMPORTANT!! You cannot win OR lose by fusen. If your picked rikishi is
involved in a fusen match, the default kicks in automatically. This is
so no player will have any advantage/disadvantage due to time zone
differences, as we have happening in other games. In the highly unlikely
event that your default is also involved in the fusen match, you're
toast..The best thing to do is keep an eye out for possible kyujos, and
stay away from that rikishi!!

IMPORTANT!!IMPORTANT!! YOU HAVE TO REGISTER TO PLAY, even if you've
played before!! (take two)

IMPORTANT!! When your default kicks in for a kyujo rikishi, he doesn't
count as one of the 5-per-basho you are allowed.
The tie-breaker- the player who used the lowest ranked rikishi on
average wins.

There will be no mail sent out during the Basho - you'll
have to visit us to see who's still standing.

Good luck!!

http://chaingang.sumogames.com/chaingang.html

Thanks!!
Kintamayama and Kofuji

IMPORTANT!!IMPORTANT!! YOU HAVE TO REGISTER TO PLAY, even if you've
played before!!(take three)

Hi all

Marushiki here.. Well the basho is not too far away, for the 1st week
of the Basho I will be away on Holidays. Im heading off on 2 weeks
R&R.... Next week will be spending time at a Monastary in a small town
in the rural area of Western Australia called New Norcia.
http://www.newnorcia.wa.edu.au/

And Yes they allow Girls into the guest house but not behind the
Monastary walls, and hey for $50 (a suggested donation) a night you get
3 meals included Your lodging and all the peace and tranquility you
want.. Its very quiet and peaceful there so maybe by the time I get
back I may do better than I have the last few bashos. Ill try and put
my lineup in tomorrow before I go, otherwise ive asked Tate Gyoji Jejima
to do it for me and will be droning for the 1st week and then back into
the full swing by the 2nd week.

Good luck all. See you all when I get back.

Marushiki
