Elite Marathoners join Scott Jurek in a Fat Ass 50k with 8,000' of
elevation gain. Scott predicted his time to
the minute. No watches allowed. I guess he really knows himself. Oh
yes he ran with his husky as well.

Capitol Peak Mega-Fat Ass Trail Run
http://www.run2xs.com/Run/cpfatass/index.htm

2003 Race Report by John Pearch

96 brave souls survived muddy, rainy and hilly conditions in order to
complete the Capitol Peak Mega-Fat Ass Trail Run
either in the 25K or 50K distance. Not even unpleasant January weather
could stop runners coming from all over the
Northwest (including Oregon and Utah). 31 finishers completed the
entire 50K distance and 64 completed the 25K. There
were 14 no shows, but 34 runners replace them forming a nice big crowd
in the mud! Even some of Olympia's finest runners
came out to have fun in the mud, including Dave Mora (winner of the
1990 Goodwill Games and 2 time Olympic Trials
Qualifier), Craig Dickson (2000 Olympic Trials qualifiers) and Karen
Steen (2000 and 2004! Olympic Trials Qualifier). Thank
you Scott McCoubrey for bringing a big crew of Seattle area runners
down, (including Scott Jurek and Uli Steidl).

Much preparation went into this event in order to make it a success.
The website was developed by Scott McQueeney
(Portland, OR) who did a remarkable job of posting photos of the course
and other information about the race. See website:
http://www.run2xs.com/Run/cpfatass The photos were all taken on top of
Capitol Peak, however there was no view on race
day, with all the fog. A crew of 12 helped get the start area ready by
cleaning up the Wedekind Picnic shelter taking more
than 2.5 hours and loading over a dozen of heavy trash bags full of
nails, glass and other garbage. The DNR were very
pleased to see all the work we put into cleaning this facility and for
all the good people that attended this run. Wedekind
was a happening place. This was the first time Capitol State Forest has
ever experienced a trail run. Thirteen awesome
Search and Rescue volunteers (Pierce County Explorer Search and Rescue
and 4x4 unit) were posted at designated
stations throughout the course. $200 of donations were given to the
Search and Rescue team for their support during the
run. Several other volunteers were also a huge help throughout the
run...more than what is typically expected in a Fat Ass.

A recreation use permit was approved by the Washington State Department
of Natural Resources (DNR) in order to host the
event. In addition, insurance was obtained through the USA Track and
Field Association which made this event a National
Sanctioned Mountain Running Event. Several sponsors were also greatly
appreciated for donating t-shirts and other goodies
for the participation awards, which include South Sound Running of
Olympia, Montrail, and Seattle Running Company.

A front page cover story featured in the Olympian the day after the
race.
  See websites:
  http://www.theolympian.com/home/news/20030126/frontpage/15781.shtml

  http://www.theolympian.com/home/news/20030126/sportssection/15805.shtml

We are grateful for everyone who either participated or volunteered
that made this a day to remember as well as put
Olympia on the map in the ultraworld! It was so good to see so many
people throughout the NW at one event. Next year,
we will definitely have something, but we are discussing between
an official race in May, another Mega-Fat Ass in January, or Both.
Either way, see you all next year!!

  John Pearch (co-FAD)
PS: I managed to finish the entire 50K with only 3.5 hours of sleep!

You're right we do live in a fabulous part of the world with great trails
all around us. I'm posting this to our local ultrarunning list just in case
they start complaining about the rain (which is way below normal this year
too).

M&M,

Brilliant!
I will pitch the Dirty Duo to the group.
I've only got two people officially signed up for the clinic, but that's two
new ultra-runners to the crowd! There's been more interest from the list and
on our website, so I'm hoping for somewhere around 6-7 which is a nice
manageable size for my first year.

Looking forward to running with you guys somewhere...

Heal up!

Kevin

Hey Kevin,

Great idea!! Mike and I are presently battling running injuries of our own,
but I should be up and running fairly soon and will definitly keep you in
mind for a couple of your sat morning runs. The Dirty Duo is on March 1 and
we do offer a 25km trail run!! (thats our plug!!) So if that fits into
your training schedule, we'd love to see you out there. All plugs aside,
I'll check your running schedule and maybe see you when your out on the
shore!!!

Best of luck and I'll spread the word for you...

Cheers,
Mike and Melissa

You won't need this, but you may know someone who would like to get
into ultra-running with other people at the same level.

I am a casual ultra runner who believes that an ultra is more fun and
easier on the body than the standard marathon and I'd like to help
introduce new people to the sport. With my role as clinic manager at
Rackets and Runners (athletic store in Vancouver), I decided to
create a clinic for such a purpose.

I am posting this notice for two reasons:
   1) If you know of anyone in Vancouver or nearby who might like to
join, have them check out some details at www.racketsandrunners.ca or
they can contact me at k2@....
   2) If you'd like to join one or two of our group runs, and you're an
experienced ultra-runner, there is no cost to come out on some of our
destination runs. Just check our website for the schedule (posted
   soon).

The details are simple. We have selected the Larch Hills 50k as the
entry level ultra since it is at the right time of year, and I
totally enjoyed it last year thinking it would be a great course as a
beginner's ultra. The clinic is on Saturday mornings at 8:30am
beginning on February 8th and going for 18 weeks. Our first run is
15k, so anyone intending to do the clinic should be comfortable at
that distance. We are using the slow and determined pace for our long
Saturday runs incrementing the distance by 10% each week with the
longest distance being 38k on the trails. We have some interesting
guest speakers including Ean Jackson, Dr. Steven Stark, Dr. Marc
Lindy, Chris Mager, Dave Norona and hopefully we can entice the
amazing Al Howie over for a wee chat. That would be special.

If anyone has any input or would like to get involved in clinic, I'd
   love to hear from you.

Thanks for letting me say my piece, and I hope it wasn't
inappropriate to post such an item, but I'm just trying to create a
new way to get people into ultra-running.

Quick update on the Half Knacker.

The website for this event, www.halfknacker.ca, will be up by the
first week of February.

The Half Knacker takes place on Sunday, June 1st at 730am. The course
for this race follows approx. 60% of the Knee Knacker, but due to the
expected high volume of participants, the route has been altered to
accomodate the heavy flow. Therefore, the race will be about 15 min
faster for the leaders than the traditional last half.

This event is race #3 in the 2003 Iron Lung Trail Series
(www.ironlung.ca) and is expected to sell out quickly.

Updates to follow shortly.

Cheers,

Eric Langhjelm

Hi,

I would like to take this opportunity to invite the ultra running
community to take part in the third annual STORMY 67km trail run. The
STORMY, race #5 in the Montrail series, takes place on Saturday,
August 9th at 6am sharp.

There is a brand new website for this race, www.stormytrailrace.ca
Content for this site is still being uploaded, but basic race
information and registration options are up.

In addition to the Montrail series, the STORMY is race #4 in the 2003
Iron Lung Trail Series (www.ironlung.ca). Inclusion in both series is
meant to help raise the profile and boost the number of participants
for this fabulous run.

See you on the trails,

This was the fourth time this event was held in the Malcolm Knapp U.B.C.
Research Forest. The weather was unseasonably warm and many participants
were in shorts on this balmy albeit drizzly day.

Advertized as “an unorganized non-event” runners simply arrive between 8 and
9 am, pick up a map, find someone to run with and head out keeping their own
time. The 25 Km loop can be run in either direction allowing runners to see
each other along the way.

The Research Forest is a gem of lakes creeks and hills tucked at the base of
the Golden Ears Range. Used for forest management study the Forest is
interlaced with a network of service roads which make for great running as
no vehicles or bikes are allowed.

Hey Kevin,

Great idea!! Mike and I are presently battling running injuries of our own, but
I should be up and running fairly soon and will definitly keep you in mind for a
couple of your sat morning runs. The Dirty Duo is on March 1 and we do offer a
25km trail run!! (thats our plug!!) So if that fits into your training
schedule, we'd love to see you out there. All plugs aside, I'll check your
running schedule and maybe see you when your out on the shore!!!

Best of luck and I'll spread the word for you...

On the sunny New Year's eve day I did a 50 km run in Burnaby. The run
measures 49.5 km using the measuring tool in the Microsoft Streets and
Trips computer program (see the attached map, I measured the route in 5 km
sections) and 53 km using my new Timex GPS watch. I ran, or should I say
shuffled (It took me 8 hours and 12 minutes to do the whole thing), the
route in two separate loops, using my house as the midpoint. The first loop
tours south Burnaby (19.7 km), and the second north Burnaby (29.7 km).
Alternatively, the mid point could be the clubhouse at Burnaby lake. The
route attempts to follow as many trails as possible and passes many of the
most scenic locations in Burnaby. You will run on a trail beside the Fraser
River, run past Deer and Burnaby Lakes, and do most of the Trans Canada
trail as it crosses N. Burnaby and overlooks the Burrard Inlet. You will
also run partly in Vancouver and next to Coquitlam.

Possible future addition or modifications could include running through
Everett Crowley Park and around the Fraserview Golf course in southeast
Vancouver. Extending the run into New Westminster by running down the
Skytrain to New Westminster Key and following the Trans Canada Trail to
Rocky Point park in Port Moody to make it a Five Cities Ultra.

Hey Ean. If you're looking for an alternative location for your Fat Ass 50,
or Rob, if there is too much snow on the YT course, consider Burnaby.

See my attached map and route description.

Ever since I first ran the Dilly-Dally loop seven years ago I’ve wanted to
do it in winter.

The 25 km. Dilly-Dally loop (also called the Halvor Lunden Trail in honour
of its builder) starts at the Buntzen Lake parking lot and heads north along
the Buntzen Lake trail to the dam at the north end of the lake. From here it
follows the access road to Buntzen Bay. Just before reaching the last curve
down to the bay is where the fun begins. From this point a trail heads north
to Crocker Lookout, veers east to Dilly-Dally Pass and then south to
Dilly-Dally Peak. Over this section you gain over 1000m of elevation in
about 4km. That translates to steep. From this high point you ramble south
along the ridge passing Swan Falls Junction (also known as the ‘escape
route’ because after this point you are committed to finishing the loop).
The trail meanders through a beautiful subalpine area of forests, peaks and
tarns with names such as Spirit Pass, Tunnel Point and Dead Tree Pass. When
you reach Lindsay Lake you are on a plateau known as the ‘Lakes District’.
As you pass reflective lakes and ponds with names such as Chickadee, Siskin,
Wren and Robin you have to think that Halvor was a bit of a bird-fancier.
This is a tricky place to navigate as there are many side-trails which loop
back on themselves or emerge at the major junction called El
Paso. Just past here you run along the edge of a clear-cut with the
spectacular drop down to Foy Creek on your right. You finish with the steep
switchbacking descent which pops you out on the powerline from which it’s
less than a mile back to the parking lot. In the summer this run can be done
in 4-5 hrs. In the winter it’s a different story.

I’ve attempted the winter Dilly-Dally 8-10 times over the last seven years.
Over this time I’ve dragged out many of the best local ultrarunners and
adventure racers. Raging creeks, deep snow, getting lost and just plain
running out of time have stopped us. I’ll never forget the year Jim Swadling
broke trail for Deborah Askew, Sally and me in waist-deep snow to get to the
top of Dilly-Dally Peak in four hours. Needless to say we had to turn
around. A few years ago we actually ran it on the day of the winter solstice
but since the actual solstice was in the afternoon it wasn’t a ‘winter’ run.
Picky, I know, but this event has rules! It also has a time limit since the
gates to the parking lot open at 8 am. and close again at 4:30 pm.

One of the key factors in being able to do this run is snow depth. Obviously
having little snow makes for easier running but the other factor is
navigation. Somewhere between 2-3 metres of snow most of the trail-markers
get buried. Having been lost up there too many times, a few years ago I
punched a series of waypoints into my GPS during one of our summer runs.
This makes it easier to stay on course but struggling through waist-deep
snow is still too slow a method of travel to make the eight hour limit. It
was about two years ago that I considered using snowshoes. Sally and I had
started doing quite a bit of snowshoeing over the winter on Burke and
Alouette Mountains. My only concern was the extreme steepness of the climb
up to Dilly-Dally peak. I wasn’t confident that snowshoes would work on such
steep terrain. Then last year I went out with Mike Wardas and Jim Mandelli
to give it a try. The snow was very deep and low so we were forced to put
our snowshoes on early. After reaching the top we ended up getting
disoriented and decided to come down the Swan Falls ‘escape route’. Although
we didn’t make it through I learnt, thanks to Jim’s patient instruction,
that it was possible to go up these steep slopes on snowshoes and that it
was probably faster to not use them until reaching the top of the ridge.

That brings us to this year. It had been a good Dilly-Dally season as I’d
been through there three times since September. The lack of snow finally
ended about a week before the solstice so my hopes for a snowshoe-less
crossing were dashed. This year the solstice fell on Saturday December 21st
so we decided to give it a shot on the 22nd. I tried to recruit the usual
band of collaborators but none could make it so Sally and I decided to go it
alone. The day dawned rainy and the mountains were socked in but the
temperature was warm and we headed out running along the trail with our
snowshoes in our packs. As we headed up the steep climb toward DD Peak we
started to wallow in the ever-deepening snow but resisted putting on the
snowshoes until the flat section just before the final ascent to the peak.
The snow depth was about a 150 cm. which still allowed us to see most of the
markers. It had taken us three and a half-hours to this point and I was
getting pretty optimistic that today would be the day. The snowshoes enabled
us to ‘run’ the downhill sections of this rolling ridge and when we got to
the Swan Falls turnoff there wasn’t even a question of which way to go. I
soon pulled out the GPS as insurance but satellite problems made its
usefulness sketchy. Between our two pairs of eyes and the intermittent
satellite reception we managed to navigate our way along with only a few
minor sidetracks. Once we arrived at Lindsay Lake I knew we had it in the
bag but forced myself to keep my exhilaration in check as we still had a
ways to go. Sure enough we ended up on one of the loop trails and had to
backtrack a short way to get back onto the main trail. The snow started to
get noticeably thinner as we descended to El Paso and soon we slipped out of
our snowshoes and got back into running mode. We only saw a few hikers on
the way down and it wasn’t long until we were back at the car. It had only
taken us 6:35 and I was ecstatic to finally have done something I’ve wanted
to do for a long time. The traditional post-run Starbucks never tasted as
good as it did on this day when the trailrunning gods had given us an early
Christmas present!

Rob,

How could a lawyer cause you so much pain? Was he responsible for your
loss of toenails? Jock itch? Road rash? Muscle cramps? Bloody
nipples? Sagging bum? Was he the one that pushed you to spend a
fortune on pain killers, physio, massage and surgery?

Ah, to be esteemed as much as a lawyer! =;-)

Happy New Year!

There's still time to make your new years athletic resolutions...

I've communicated with most of the race directors of ultras (road and
trail
races > 42.2K) across Canada over the past few months and am pleased to
announce that the Canadian ultra calendar is now up-to-date for 2003.
http://www.100k.ca/racecalendar.htm)

The calendar lists all Canadian ultras by date so that you can easily
find
more information. Most Canadian ultras now have a web page. Many of
those
have applications that you can print off. Some even let you register
online.

Please help me to make this calendar valuable to ultrarunners across
Canada
and around the world by pointing out any errors or omissions you find in
the
calendar. (Please send me your comments directly at
<mailto:ejackson@...> ejackson@...
rather than replying to the list.)

Stay healthy... and have a *great* year!

Ean "Rain, No Train" Jackson

PS Where I have not received confirmation from a race director
regarding a
2003 event, the calendar will show the last known date and contact
information.

Ean....

Sounds like you and the group had a great time. I heard you on the radio
and saw you on the television last night. Good coverage of a great event.

Hope you foot is feeling better and that you and your family had a good
Christmas Break.

See you when it is not raining. I suppose after 50km of wind and rain that
you have reached you quota for the year.

Take care
PJ
