In sunny North Vancouver, where the snow has given way to tulips
Hi all,
I am looking for suggestions for a 50-miler (my first) sometime between late
May and late June. I had hoped to run Elk Lake but I don't think that I will
have enough long runs to be ready for the 50 miles by then. I do think that
I'll probably run the 50k, though. I would like the run to be driving
distance (loosely defined) from Kamloops.
I have found two possibilities so far - Blackfoot Ultra in Edmonton and the
North Face race in Bellingham. Does anyone have any experience of these
races? What are the trails like? How difficult are the races? Which would
you choose and why? The only trail ultra that I have done is KneeKnacker -
50 miles of that terrain would almost surely be too much .
Any suggestions of other 50 milers to consider in that time frame?
Thanks
Sean.

Since my earlier post Karl Jensen has graciously volunteered to record times and give out maps at the YT Run on Jan 24th at the Malcolm-Knapp UBC Research Forest.
I've added a bunch of old results and posted the run info on the new site. Maps are also up (the yellow circles on the 25K loop indicate where people go wrong)
I've been getting a few e-mail regarding Yours Truly Runs. I may not be here on race weekend (Jan 24/25) so can't commit to hosting this run an the Malcolm-Knapp Research Forest.
However I invite all those interested in carrying on the tradition to go for it. I've put some of the old info on a new page:
Hello Ultrarunners,
It is time for you to nominate a British Columbian for the 2008
Association of Canadian Ultrarunners (ACU) (male and female) of the year.
The ACU is looking for those ultrarunners who...
-Have had good results at the National and international level
-Demonstrate team spirit
-Involved in the running community
Send me your nominations.
Please include as much detail as possible as I send your nomination to
the ACU as you have written it.
You can post your nominations here are email me at:

Thank you for your help!
In 2006 we saw Surrey resident Darin Bentley named the Male
Ultrarunner of the Year and Victoria runner, Darrin Froese as runner up.

If you're still not sure how to kick off the new year on the right foot, there's still room for you at the start line of the Vancouver NY Day FA50 in Stanley Park this Thursday morning: www.clubfatass.com/events/VancouverNewYear/registration
If you don't freeze your buns off on the run, you can join us for a character-building post-run dip in the Pacific. Bathing suit optional. (Prize for the person who breaks the current record of 11 minutes.) Yes, you can technically forgo the run and just do the swim because you will want to run from the ocean to the hot showers and that counts as a custom distance.
Prize for the person who travels the furthest to participate (I think a Newfie is looking to break the course record, but I think he has a BC drivers license). Yes, you can run any distance you want and no, being hung-over is not an excuse.
Happy New Year... and 'hoping you achieve all of your running resolutions in 2009!
A fellow runner from Hawaii is passing through town and was wondering if he could link up with anyone who planned to get out on Dec 23 for a run.
Please get in touch with him directly if you might be able to help him out and show him some of our fair city's trails (as white as they may be!)
His email is justin.langley@...
Hi Bruce,
I just wanted to touch bases with you about hitting the trails this
month. Unfortunately; because of the holidays I will only be able to run
on the 23rd. Hopefully someone can still show me some of the trail scene
Vancouver has to offer. Let me know if someone is able to do some trail
running that day. Preferably starting in the morning and maybe do about
20-30 miles.
Thanks,
Justin

16th Annual Vancouver Fat Ass 50
A run in and around Vancouver, BC followed by a brisk swim, brunch and brews
Never done an 'ultra', but always wanted to? Resolving to get off your butt and be a little more active in 2009 but don't know where to start?
Join me for a loosely-organized New Year's Day running classic. Run 1K or run 100K on this 50K out-and-back course. Yes, it will likely rain and you will get the nice new running shoes your Mama gave you for Christmas all muddy. (80% trails, 20% paved.) Yes, you will likely get lost in the woods in a city of 2 million, so bring bus fare and a cell phone so you can rescue yourself and get to the finisher party before the free beer is all gone.
Important Note: This was always intended to be an intimate little affair with a handful of crazy friends. The number of crazy friends seems to grow every year. I will cap the number of participants at 100 this year and 74 have already registered. This means the event will likely fill by the start of December... if you are planning to join me, please register soon! www.ClubFatAss.com/events/VancouverNewYear/registration

Frequently Asked Questions about Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50
Q: Is there a 'Skinny Ass' this year? (As in, "Can I run less than 50k?")
A: Sure... get your skinny ass out there. See the FAQs for measured distances from 5K to 50K. www.ClubFatAss.co/events/VancouverNewYear/faq
Q: Is there a 'Fat Ass Duathlon' this year? (As in, "Can I get official credit for a swim in the ocean afterward?")
A: You bet... in fact, it's expected that you will do a polar bear swim in the Pacific afterward. Note: In 2006, Bill "Numb Nuts" Russell earned recognition for lasting almost 11 minutes in the ocean after his run. Betcha can't beat that!
Q: Where's the party?
A: See the agenda at www.ClubFatAss.com/events/VancouverNewYear/Agenda
The good folks at the Mosquito Creek Grill are open to loud, obnoxious
runners and their friends. Sorry, no kids. Draw prizes for runners and
crew who show up. Did I mention there's a free beer for registered runners
and crew?
BC Hydro has closed the Buntzen Trail along the west side of the lake
for replacement of the Valentine Creek Bridge. Closure is expected to
last until about mid Dec '08. There is a flagged detour up to the
Lakeview Trail which allows a complete loop of the lake. The detour is
just a little longer and a little more hilly than the lake trail.

Haney Harrison 100Km
Saturday, November 8th, 2008
Harrison Hot Springs, BC, Canada
Leading from start to finish, Hassan Lofti-Pour of North Vancouver
ran a strong race to cap off a successful season by winning the Haney
to Harrison 100Km in a time of 8:15:11 knocking close to 10 minutes
off his previous year's time. Andy Bachmann of Pitt Meadows ran
negative splits to move up through the field and capture 2nd place in
a time of 8:59:13. Ron Rillorta of Coquitlam, stepping up from
Ironman triathlons to run his first ultra, finished third in 9:18:00.
Nicola Gildersleeve of North Vancouver looked fresh and consistent
taking the win in the women's race in 9:31:31 having tapered for this
race by running the New York City Marathon just 6 days
before. Second place went to Ultraman athlete Barb Owen of Maple
Ridge in 11:50:11, just ahead of Coquitlam's Lucy Ryan who turned in
a time of 11:54:29 less than a month after finishing the Ironman
triathlon in Kona.
Race conditions were mild and damp, with temperatures in the low
teens Celsius (low fifties F) and only about four hours of rain
compared to the torrential downpours of the last two years. The
course consists of paved highways following British Columbia's scenic
Sasquatch Drive. Starting just outside Vancouver in Maple Ridge, the
course winds its way over rolling hills, passing through Mission and
into the lush farmlands of the Fraser Valley enroute to the finish in
the idyllic resort community of Harrison Hot Springs. This year
marked the 12th running of the event.
Of course, if it wasn't for the volunteers, nobody would be running
at all. The efforts of the volunteers cannot go
unnoticed, particularly in wet rainy conditions, which may not be
bad to run in, but truly create a different form of endurance event
for the volunteers on the course.

*WOW!!*
Congratulations to Darin, who finished - get this! - *11th overall* and the
second North American behind race winner Scott Jurek. It looks like
everything came together perfectly on the day, with ideal training and
peaking, and a complete recovery from nagging injuries earlier in the year.
Darin finished in 27:51, a pretty smoking time for 246km when many of us
mortals are hard-pressed to break 24 for "just" 162km. That's sub-11 minute
miles for the entire distance - not an easy thing to do for that long.
What a fantastic result, we should all be proud of Darin for such an
outstanding performance and for representing our country in this
high-profile event. To the best of my knowledge (and please correct any
error), he is the first Canadian to complete this gruelling run, and in
doing so has certainly set the bar high for anyone else to follow.

Good Luck and Best wishes to Darin who will be the only Canadian in
tomorrow's historic Spartathlon in Greece. For those unfamiliar in is 246km
race in Greece covering the historic route from Athens to Sparta. It starts
at the Acropolis.
For twenty four consecutive years, the Spartathlon athletes have followed
the route John Foden and his team defined in 1982 when they experimented in
running from Athens to Sparta. It is based on Herodotus' description of the
Athenian 'Imerodromou' or messenger who arrived in Sparta the day after he
departed from Athens and also on well known historical events of that time.
It has, therefore, been considered the nearest route to that which
Pheidippides must have followed.
Briefly, Miltiades' messenger started out of Athens on the ancient Iera
Odos, or "sacred road," up to Elefsis. From there he followed Skyronia Odos,
a military road on the slopes of the Gerania mountains, and traveled through
Isthmia, Examilia and Ancient Corinth. He went on to Ancient Nemea, thus
avoiding the Epicratea of Argos, as it wasn't in alliance with Athens, and
he continued along the mountains between Argolida and Arcadia. He climbed
the Parthenio mountain (1200 meters), where he encountered the God Pan.
Descending the mountain, he continued in the direction of historical Tegea,
one of the locations mentioned by Herodotus in his account about
Pheidippides. He proceeded south toward Sparta. Upon his arrival in Sparta,
he completed 1140 "stadia," which equaled 246 kilometers.
It is based on Herodotus’ description of the
Athenian ‘Imerodromou’ or messenger who arrived in Sparta the day after he
departed from Athens and also on well known historical events of that time.
It has, therefore, been considered the nearest route to that which
Pheidippides must have followed.
Briefly, Miltiades’ messenger started out of Athens on the ancient Iera
Odos, or “sacred road,” up to Elefsis. From there he followed Skyronia Odos,
a military road on the slopes of the Gerania mountains, and traveled through
Isthmia, Examilia and Ancient Corinth. He went on to Ancient Nemea, thus
avoiding the Epicratea of Argos, as it wasn’t in alliance with Athens, and
he continued along the mountains between Argolida and Arcadia. He climbed
the Parthenio mountain (1200 meters), where he encountered the God Pan.
Descending the mountain, he continued in the direction of historical Tegea,
one of the locations mentioned by Herodotus in his account about
Pheidippides. He proceeded south toward Sparta. Upon his arrival in Sparta,
he completed 1140 “stadia,” which equaled 246 kilometers.

Greetings fellow ultrarunners!
The 2008 BC Ultra Trailrunning Series has wrapped up with the final event on the
beautiful - but challenging - trails of Kamloops at the Walk In The Park. It was
a fantastic day there with optimal conditions for taking in the single-track and
hills in Kenna-Cartwright Park.
This year's Series winners have been posted at http://www.bcuts.ca/standings.htm
Congratulations to the top three in each age group, who receive fantastic prizes
from our Series sponsors: Nathan packs, CarbBoom gel and EDGE energy drink.
A special mention goes to two ladies:
Gail Forshaw and Ellie Greenwood both placed first in their respective
categories in ALL the races they ran - a clean sweep for each of them!
Gail should also be noted for having completed her 110th ultramarathon at the
WITP event. Gail is one of the pioneers of ultrarunning in BC, and has set many
course and age group records over her phenomenal career. It is motivating to see
her run and continue to set the bar with her amazing performances. Gail, with
her husband George, has also directed and organised many events, including the
first five years of the Diez Vista event, one of the Series races. Thanks for
inspiring us, Gail, and for all your contributions to the sport.
Many thanks go to Nathan, CarbBoom and EDGE who have provided aid station
supplies and draw prizes at all the events in addition to the overall Series
prizing. The Series would not be possible without the input from these
supportive companies, so please look for them in the stores!
Finally, thanks very much to all the race directors, race committee members, and
volunteer staff who made the Series races possible. It takes a ton of work to
make these events happen, and we are grateful for all your efforts.
See you in 2009 - the Dirty Duo comes up quickly in February, so start your
training plan soon :-)
Thanks for racing in BC,
Bruce

Mountain Highway Madness is in a couple of weeks!
Mountain Highway Madness is an interval run. It's about 15K out and back, in
the woods on a wide, dirt and gravel road that goes up and down a big
mountain in
North Vancouver. Do 1, 2 or 3 laps like everyone else. Do 4 laps and join
an elite handful of looney tunes. Do it 5 or more times and set a world
record.
While you don't need a doctor's certificate, you have to be at least a bit
crazy to even consider the challenge. Details at:

Wow, what another great event we had here in BC at this year's STORMY up in
Squamish! Both the 100-mile and 50-mile races featured some spectacular
performances, as the longer distances
gave runners an opportunity to really test themselves.
In the 100-mile race, it was all about Gary Robbins of North Vancouver, who led
the race from start to finish. Gary is in the middle of a sensational season,
and STORMY was no exception to the trend, with him finishing in a new course
record of 17:39. This finish time actually got him in before the 50-mile racers
even started the next morning! Darren Froese of Victoria, in second place,
definitely pushed Gary for the entire distance, and finished in a very
impressive 20:33. On the women's side, Shirlee Ross of Kelowna - and the Race
Director for the Scorched Sole 50k - completed the course in 27:56, a great time
considering her rather impressive blisters! Congratulations to all 100-mile
finishers, there were a lot of local runners who seized the opportunity to try
the distance for the first time.
In the 50-mile race, Hassan Lofti-Pour repeated as overall race winner after his
victory last year, making it look all too easy. There was a bit of a race on the
women's side, with Cheryl Beatty on the hunt behind Ellie Greenwood.
Unfortunately, Cheryl ran out of trail and Ellie came out on top, notching her
third win of the Series in as many races - a clean sweep! Of note is that Ellie
and Cheryl finished in 2nd and 3rd overall, respectively.
STORMY inadvertently proved to be a gathering place for many people involved in
the BC Ultra Trailrunning Series:
- Dirty Duo RD Heather McDonald was volunteering at the finish line
- the original Diez Vista RD's, Gail and George Forshaw, were there too: Gail
raced the 50-mile, and George was up all night at the Powerhouse and University
aid stations

It was a great reunion, and also indicates that your Series race directors are
also racers themselves, or help out at other events too. We all have to be
pretty grateful for people like them!
The last race in this year's Series is in Kamloops at Walk In the Park. This is
your last chance to pick up series points for some of the great prizes we have
to give away from Nathan, EDGE, and CarbBoom. See who your competition is at
www.bcuts.ca Come on up to enjoy the beautiful trails in the Interior, or to
cheer on your fellow runners!
See you in Kamloops!

Subject: [RD] URGENT Vollie Request for 100 Miler!!
STORMY Squamish,BC
Hello Everyone,
My apologies for resending this message, but today is race day for the 100 milers and unfortunately two vollies had to back out last night.
I need two vollies; one for the Powerhouse Aid Station and one for the University(this one is covered until 1:00AM).
Please help us by asking friends, fellow runners, family members if they can help.
Thank you.

The latest BC Ultra Trailrunning Series points standings have been posted at
http://www.bcuts.ca, after another spectacular Knee Knackering North Shore Trail
Run.
What made this year's KKNSTR so special? It was the 20th anniversary race,
making it one of - if not, THE - oldest trail run in Canada. It is definitely
one of the toughest races around, but still attracts a huge amount of first-time
trailrunners and ultramarathoners, and has been at maximum capacity since its
very early years.
Huge kudos are due to the various race directors and race committee members who
have participated over the years to make this gem of an event what it is, and we
should all be grateful for thier efforts. Thanks to all the organisers, and
especially to Enzo "The Godfather" Federico and Shane Collins who came up with
the original idea and the subsequent energy to turn it into a race for the rest
of us.
For this year's run, it was a fascinating irony to have Peter Findlay be
victorious over the field again, considering that he won the very first KKNSTR
official race in 1990! Ironic perhaps, but not too surprising considering the
talent of this fine runner.
For more information on the race's history, check out the various postings from
past race directors at http://kneeknacker.blogspot.com
Congratulations to all this year's KKNSTR runners, and thanks to the race for
being part of the BC Ultra Trailrunning Series for the past eight years as well!
I hope you are looking forward to the next Series event in Squamish, the STORMY
50-mile and 100-mile trail runs. If you aren't racing, please consider
volunteering at the event to help your fellow runners and RD's out!
regards,
Bruce

One week to go until the 5th running of Bill's Great Peak Ascent!
Perfect timing for a 30 km, right smack dab in the middle between Kneeknacker and STORMY. This is a good STORMY training run or just a good opportunity to get a 30 km (or less) training run in with friends.
Afterwards, we'll be getting together at the Mosquito Creek grill for food, a free beer and socializing. Also, this year, I've got tons of swag to give away. You gotta be at the Grill to be eligible though! Hope to see you all there!
Hi there,
Every Canada Day, I dig out an old pair of Canada flag running shorts and
celebrate the day with a run around the neighborhood. This year I'm
planning a short run (about 1 hour) in and around the Capilano Canyon in
North Van followed by a kayak trip down the Capilano River. Want to join me
for one or both?
Very informal. Details at:
http://www.clubfatass.com/events/flash-canada-day-kayak-capilano
If you've been down the Cap River in a kayak and have any thoughts or
advice, I'd love to hear from you whether you want to join in or not. If
you join us, I'll buy you a Canada Day beer, as it would be good to have
someone in the group who has some experience on the river.
Happy Canada Day!

Hello fellow ultrarunners!
Sorry for the delay, but the BC Ultra Trailrunning Series points have been
updated after race #3 at Elk/Beaver in Victoria and race #4 at Scorched Sole in
Kelowna. Things are definitely getting interesting in a number of the age groups
as everyone finds their groove after the loooooong rainy and cool spring (is it
even over yet?)
Over at Elk/Beaver, a couple of our neighbours to the east put the locals to the
test, with one of Canada's very best 100k runners, Jack Cook, coming out on top
over a fantastic challenge from perennial Canadian 100k Team member Darren
Froese of Victoria. It was a really tight race that pushed the top runners all
the way.
Congratulations to all the runners in the 100k, 50 mile and 50km events, and
thanks to the ever-enthusiastic race director Carlos Castillo for organising it
all.
A few weeks later up in Kelowna, Mike Labelle from Victoria tore up the field in
what could really be called the "Swamped Sole", rather than Scorched Sole.
(Instead of baking in the heat, the runners faced Giant Mud Pits worthy of a
monster truck). This young runner came off a 2nd place at the Elk/Beaver 50k to
take the field outright in Kelowna. However, he was pressured by a hard-charging
Ellie Greenwald who once again exhibited awesome form to take the women's title
and second place overall. Despite these two 20-somethings beating the rest of
the pack, it should be noted that more "experienced" athletes made up almost all
of the remainder of the participants. Special mention goes to Jim Swadling - it
was great to see him on the trails again, and also for sporting a historic
Silvertip race shirt! RD Shirlee Ross and her co-directors Janice Page and Dan
Crockett put on another great event, it is always a treat for the runners at the
Scorched Sole.
For those of you running the next BCUTS event at Knee Knacker on July 12, have a
great run. For everyone else, why not come out and support your local race at an
aid station or greeting your fellow runners at the finish line? It will get you
inspired for the STORMY 50 or 100 mile runs in August!
See you on the trails,
Bruce

The trail is drying out and the weather looks good for this weekend. 'Got
some draw prizes and the Mosquito Creek is stockpiling a free beer for all
participants. All that's missing for a good running party is you!
Please join me for the 5th annual XTC (X-country Trail Challenge) this
Saturday. It's mostly on the TransCanada Trail in the north shore mountains.
Suitable for beginners as well as hard-asses. Run the course uphill from the
gym (25K). Run it downhill from the picnic area (25K). Run it out and back
from the gym (50K), roll your own distance out-and-back from
the gym.
It's a very scenic route and good for beginning trail runners as well as
those training for the KneeKnacker who want to avoid the snow. Some
background from previous years is at:
www.clubfatass.com/events/xtc/background
It's a Club Fat Ass event, so it's free to Club members. Not a member? Join
for the day for $20 and earn bonus points if you register online, or

You should be able to find someone who can help. You might also want to send a message to the "Training Run Coordinator" at http://www.kneeknacker.com/feedback.htm. Not sure whether you'll have any luck with that but it's worth a try.
I am taking part in my first kneeknacker this year and keen to get as much time out on the trails as possible. I don't have a car, which is not a problem for Wednesday night runs, but will be for Sunday runs as the public transit is a bit latter starting. I am hoping someone might be able to help me out with a ride on Sunday mornings, I live in the Mt Pleasant Area near corner of Kingsway and Main Street. I am happy to help out with gas etc and can walk or ride to get a bit closer.
Thanks
Campbell

Thanks to everyone who came out last Wednesday for the trail run. We had a great turn-out (23) for the first week. Should be a good year.
Just wanted to remind everyone that, as the runs get longer (and, hopefully, the weather gets warmer), be sure to bring along at least one bottle of water or electrolyte drink.
Also, please remember to make sure your name is signed off the list when you return from your run.
Thanks and hope to see you all out again this week.
