Re: [bc-ultrarunning] May/June 50 miler?

Hi Sean -

If you're in Kamloops, your best bet for location and timing will be the new 50-mile option at the Scorched Sole in Kelowna on Jun 6. http://www.scorchedsole.com

I don't know if you have done the 50k loops there in the past, but they have some fantastic trails, and this year should be especially good since they are trying to cut out a lot of the bad burn areas and sticking to the treed routes. There will be a bit more of the rail bed, but only to take us on the KVR trestle bridges, then it's off to the dirt again. I have loved the Scorched Sole trails the past few years, and am really looking forward to the 50-miler this year. Scorched Sole is also part of the BC Ultra Series, so if you are doing more of those races you'll add to your point collection.

The Blackfoot in Edmonton is a pretty good course too, but very different than what we have in BC. It is all on XC ski trails, generally grass-covered car-width trails that roll up and down with no significant climbs, but no flats either (it totally ate my legs!). I found the course there to be delightfully scenic since is it so very different that our BC environments. RD Gary does a great job, keeping it low-key and a real celebration of running. I'd add that Edmontonians are quite friendly, and are more than willing to share their cell phones and CAA cards when you find lock your keys in your rental car  ;-)

North Face run in Bellingham? I haven't done it, but presume it is similar to KKNSTR, Chuckanut, Dirty Duo - which is to say pretty much like any PacNW trail. But with these other great courses up here locally, why pay the big $$ and go south? ($90 US for entry? Are they freakin kidding me?)

Hope that helps!

cheers,
Bruce

Hi all,

I am looking for suggestions for a 50-miler (my first) some time between late May and late June.  I had hoped to run Elk Lake but I don't think that I will have enough long runs to be ready for the 50 miles by then.  I do think that I'll probably run the 50k, though. I would like the run to be driving distance (loosely defined) from Kamloops.

I have found two possibilities so far - Blackfoot Ultra in Edmonton and the North Face race in Bellingham.  Does anyone have any experience of these races?  What are the trails like?  How difficult are the races?  Which would you choose and why?  The only trail ultra that I have done is KneeKnacker - 50 miles of that terrain would almost surely be too much Smile emoticon.

Any suggestions of other 50 milers to consider in that time frame?

Thanks

Sean.
