Wow, what another great event we had here in BC at this year's STORMY up in
Squamish! Both the 100-mile and 50-mile races featured some spectacular
performances, as the longer distances
gave runners an opportunity to really test themselves.
In the 100-mile race, it was all about Gary Robbins of North Vancouver, who led
the race from start to finish. Gary is in the middle of a sensational season,
and STORMY was no exception to the trend, with him finishing in a new course
record of 17:39. This finish time actually got him in before the 50-mile racers
even started the next morning! Darren Froese of Victoria, in second place,
definitely pushed Gary for the entire distance, and finished in a very
impressive 20:33. On the women's side, Shirlee Ross of Kelowna - and the Race
Director for the Scorched Sole 50k - completed the course in 27:56, a great time
considering her rather impressive blisters! Congratulations to all 100-mile
finishers, there were a lot of local runners who seized the opportunity to try
the distance for the first time.
In the 50-mile race, Hassan Lofti-Pour repeated as overall race winner after his
victory last year, making it look all too easy. There was a bit of a race on the
women's side, with Cheryl Beatty on the hunt behind Ellie Greenwood.
Unfortunately, Cheryl ran out of trail and Ellie came out on top, notching her
third win of the Series in as many races - a clean sweep! Of note is that Ellie
and Cheryl finished in 2nd and 3rd overall, respectively.
STORMY inadvertently proved to be a gathering place for many people involved in
the BC Ultra Trailrunning Series:
- Dirty Duo RD Heather McDonald was volunteering at the finish line
- the original Diez Vista RD's, Gail and George Forshaw, were there too: Gail
raced the 50-mile, and George was up all night at the Powerhouse and University
aid stations
- Elk/Beaver RD Carlos Castillo completed the 100-mile
- Scorched Sole RD Shirlee Ross completed the 100-mile
- KKNSTR RD Kelsy Trigg raced the relay, Board members Craig Moore and Jeff
Trigg ran the 50-mile
- Walk In the Park RD Chris Larouche completed the 100-mile
- BCUTS founder and past director Rob Lang volunteered at the Powerhouse aid
station
- past BCUTS series director and long-time KKNSTR director Enzo Federico
volunteered at the finish and did announcing
- STORMY RD Wendy Montgomery was doing *everything*! She was indeed a blurr :-)
- I manned the Edith Lake aid station
It was a great reunion, and also indicates that your Series race directors are
also racers themselves, or help out at other events too. We all have to be
pretty grateful for people like them!
The last race in this year's Series is in Kamloops at Walk In the Park. This is
your last chance to pick up series points for some of the great prizes we have
to give away from Nathan, EDGE, and CarbBoom. See who your competition is at
www.bcuts.ca Come on up to enjoy the beautiful trails in the Interior, or to
cheer on your fellow runners!
See you in Kamloops!
regards,
Bruce Grant
