Subject: Prolonged exercise study at UBC

Hi Ean,

My name is Jessica Scott, and I received your email from Gary Robbins. I am
currently completing my MSc degree at UBC, and Gary suggested I contact you
in hopes of recruiting a few people for my thesis.

I am looking for 8 female athletes for my study. All participants in my
study will receive a free VO2max test, including analysis (which usually
costs around $150), and will complete a free half ironman on March 12th.

Here is a brief summary of my project: I am interested in heart function
following prolonged exercise, as a few other studies have shown that the
heart actually gets tired (decreases contractility) after prolonged
exercise, which may ultimately limit performance. We are looking for
individuals ranging in age from 19 to around 38, who train at a fairly high
level.

This study involves 4 testing days and here is the timeline we are looking
at:

1) Vo2 max test: around 1 hour (February)
2) heart function test: around 1 hour (March 6th)
3) half ironman and heart function test (March 12th)
4) heart function test: around 1 hour (March 13th)

We are looking to start testing people in February, and all participants in
the study will complete a semi-half ironman (1500m swim, 90km bike, 21km
run) on March 12th. The half ironman will be done in conjuction with the UBC
triathlon, so participants will swim in the UBC pool, and complete extra
loops on the bike and run courses. (the half ironman course will not be as
exciting as other races, but after talking with other triathletes, it is a
more attractive option than cycling on a trainer and running on a
treadmill). This event can also be thought of as a great training day, with
lots of support and other athlets out on the course.

If you could pass this info on to anyone who might be interested, I would
really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Jessica
