Copied from another forum who copied this from the Ultralist:
"all good things must come to an end,
but i am not going to try to hide my disappointment at the untimely demise
of the barkley marathons. this morning i met with the people who apparently
OWN the public land in tennessee and was told that we may no longer hold our
event.
some of the things that went against us rather surprised me. it seems that
not one, but two "professional" race organizers had made plays to have a
race on the barkley course (why does the name badwater keep running thru my
head). in addition, they had been approached by a mountain bike person, and
a horse race person, for the same purpose.
i have been going "out there" since the '70s, when it was not even a park. i
remember the first time we went, and found that it had been made a park.
they were telling us how "wonderful" it would be, now that it was a park. i
told them it was nice to have a road, and all, but i really just wanted to
be in the woods... and that "some day you will throw us out".
that day was today.

A unique event lost. Even though I don't think I would have ever run it,
I've loved reading the race reports & it expanded what I thought humans could
do.
So sad.
