Thanks for the pics, Ralph. The water levels in the swamp are at record levels.
Definitely higher than anything I've seen in the last 2 years. Plus, I can no
longer see the high water level markers King County put in many moons ago. Don't
know if there's anything other than rain contributing to it... beaver dam maybe?
If anybody owns a pair of hip waders and wants to walk downstream and check out
the situation, it would be most appreciated.

Thanks for the help yesterday Ralph, Linda, Angela, JD, David (aka Crash) and
anyone I missed. I'm guessing the job is between 1/4 and 1/3 complete.

The highly technical process is:
1) sling muck
2) dump crushed.

Ok, we need some help completing this task, so a little more detail:
1) scrape muck into pile
2) scoop up and sling it as far away as possible
3) haul in and dump crushed rock
4) spread the crushed into a crown shape at least 3" deep in the middle
5) tamp it down.

If anybody is heading to Duthie to ride and wants to get started on that, throw
a shovel in your car and take a few minutes to sling some muck -- it'd be a big
help :)

Thanks,
Mike

Some of the mud on the north access trail/path from the parking area at
the lodge has been converted to gravel through a highly technical
process developed by Mike Westra. I have some pictures here
<http://www.bikes.ruresearch.com/> that show the new gravel and a few
that show how deep the water is along the boardwalk. Some place it is
about 16" deep.

Clear!

Thanks, Bob. Great explanation. Riding and hiking on a pine needle carpet (fir
or hemlock around here) through the woods is an awesome experience, but with
heavy traffic it will quickly degrade to slop. The effects of riding on organic
are so obvious at Duthie... especially on the more deciduous east side of the
park.

Of course, just clearing the organic off the trail isn't the only problem on the
NE and Bootcamp trails at Duthie... we need to go back over the trail and work
on drainage and proper outslope/backslope.

Segue...

So join a work party and help us get the eastside XC trails in shape. :) We've
had so much continuous rain that we may have to close a big chunk of the NE
trail until it has a chance to dry out. We need your help. We're going to try to
get WPs going on both Sat & Sun through the winter.

If you can come out during the week to help, shoot me an email
mwestra@... and let me know what days/time work.

Thanks,
Mike

Anyone been over that way recently (side varient of the Thrilla)?  There's a
trail at the bottom of the new developement but it just leads up into the
cul-de-sac.  Do you have to ride the roads over there now?

I know its tough coming into a wet cold November after a great year of
mountain biking to already be thinking of next year's good times, but I
have some big news about summer 2010.

Helens Fest !

Helens Fest will be a joint venture of Evergreen and the Northwest
Trails Assocation(NWTA) Portland's offroad bicycling club.

Information below - put it on your calendars and request your vacations
now !

July 9-11,

http://evergreenmtb.org/recreation/calendar.php?event_id=8223

Announcing the Mount St. Helens Advocacy Fest 2010 ! This active volcano
and its surroundings contain epic backcountry adventures for all level
of riders. From lunar plains to old growth forest, Helens offfers
spectacular scenery and exciting riding for everyone. Helens Fest is a
new concept in fun and advocacy brought to you by Evergreen Mountain
Bike Alliance (Evergreen) and the Northwest Trails Assocation (NWTA).
Mountain bikers from 5 different states will be converging on Marble
Mountain Snow Park for camping and good times. There will be multiple
guided/group rides for all different levels, events, prizes, and demos
(imagine comparing new bikes on REAL mountain terrain).
More Info:

Sandwiched between two epic days of riding, Saturday will host the
biggest most bitchin' trail work party ever. Working with the Forest
Service and the Mount St. Helen's institute we'll show bicyclist's
commitment to the Monument and protect our access no matter what the
future holds. This summer will mark the 30th anniversary of the big
eruption and we'll make it worth your while to come out and give back -
and with so many bodies and preparation we will make a big difference on
some singletrack mileage ! Besides the official 3 days of the event, I
personally plan on adding more days of epic big mountain riding and I
encourage other groups and leaders to do the same whether it be Juniper
Ridge or the Lewis River. Its still early but we'll be posting a full
roster of riding for Friday and Sunday. The dates are July 9-11 so sign
up to get information and mark it on your vacation calendars for next
year as it will be 3 days or more of epic mountain bike camraderie,
advocacy and backcountry experience. Please sign up for the 9th and we
will use that as our email information list. The 10th and 11th are just
placemarkers on the calendar. Note my name may be listed as ride leader
on this posting, but I'm just one of many people helping put on this
great event.

Make today a better day by treating yourself to an almost brand new
medium sized 2008 Intense Socom. This is a sweet deal because you can
have a complete bike for the price of the frame. Please send me an email
off line or go see the bike at Fluidride on Tuesday; the bike is race /
ride ready; everything is in as new condition. Please take this bike
away for 2400 dollars or best offer.

Just a follow up because I always seem to get some feedback whenever I post
about raking or blowing off organic materials from the trail beds this time
of year.

Yes, trails free and clear of organic materials make better, more
sustainable trails. It's pure science. And, not the rocket variety.

Leaving organics on the trails does not "help" them in any way. With the
occasional exceptions when the soils are really rocky or gravelly and some
organic helps bind it together. Though, this is fairly rare. Even around
here.

Organics retain moisture and thus break down into classic PNW "goo". This
keeps the moisture on the trail bed and does not allow it to sheet or funnel
off. This also keeps the trails from drying out faster one the rains abate.
Blowers also do a better job getting the organics that make their way
through the tines of a rake.

The trails in the area which are the most sustainable have the least amount
of deciduous growth (lot o' leaves) and typically more gravelly soils. Think
Griffin versus Beaver Lake for example.

So, whether on an organized work party or on your own, anyone can do a big
help by clearing drains on your rides or getting out with a leaf rake or
"gasp" a leaf blower and ensure that the local trail systems we enjoy so
much are in their best shape during the wet season and will recover quicker
in the spring. Even using a shoe to kick out the small mud berms that form
in low spots this time of year can be helpful by allowing standing water to
clear the trail bed. And, lastly, to the 2 cycle nay sayers, I simply say,
if you want to rake a trail all day long that can get blown off in less than
an hour, go for it...

Thanks,

BBq

Cold and clear up top. Not many people at all out ( 1 equestrian and one
group of 3 on the climb) and good trail conditions overall. Safety First had
the most puddles. Bucket brigade time again.Gun Range had a light dusting of
snow so despite not heading up to the pass this morning, I still got some
first tracks. ;) Bandwagon is riding in really well and makes for a great
singletrack climb back up to the 30130 road. All in all, good conditions
like usual and a quick group meant all the usuals and back to the TH in just
a couple hours. No new blow downs either which is always nice.

Back in time for the kid's soccer game too. Family support bo-nus!

North end PV aficionados will notice that the Southern Traverse and Cedar
Run are back down to the good mineral soils for the winter. Hopefully more
clearing to come.

Of note is the section East of the Lloyd Trail junction (The old,
"Crossover" Trail.) that could use a de-mucking with a shovel if anyone can
get to that. The rest is in pretty good shape!

I feel bad but its not my fault - I posted a Reiter Pit meeting about 2
weeks ago but that meeting ended up not being that important - it was
mostly for discussing the closure of the Reiter riding area for the
winter for reclamation activities. This meeting is really the one to
attend ont eh future of the Pit. I've looked at the plan and its
prettery generic. It does have a set aside area specifically for bicycle
recreation but the general plan is pretty vague. I will be attending
this meeting as its our chance to talk directly to the DNR folk. It
looks okay for bicyclists, although I lament the loss of the last fun,
freewheeling outdoor area in the PNW, as they are now moving towards a
formal recreation plan complete with the normal enforcement and
excessive regulation that seems to be required for anyplace near large
metro areas.

Here is the url for the recreation plan:

http://www.dnr.wa.gov/ResearchScience/Topics/SEPANonProject/Pages/amp_se
pa_nonpro_reiter_jan.aspx

After I attend the meeting (and I encourage all of you to attend and see
what is up or at least read the recreation plan) I will post up a
reminder to comment with some salient points. Even though the plan is
generic and favorable to bicyclists, it is important to "keep up the
pressure" and make sure they know there is a lot of us interested and
supportive of bicycle opportunites.

Keep in mind that although most of you haven't ridden Reiter because its
always been a gnarly challenging place, as this plan goes forward there
will be regular normal singletrack trails being built for cyclists with
no motorized use, and the views and terrain are awesome , and its only
50 minutes from the eastside, so it represents an enormous opportunity
for some close in "backcountry" style riding.

here are the details on the meeting:

OLYMPIA - The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR)
will host a public meeting to provide information and receive public
comments on a draft recreation plan for the Reiter Foothills Forest.
Reiter Foothills Forest is a popular recreation area located in eastern
Snohomish County near Gold Bar and Index.

  When: Wednesday, November 18, 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Where: The Commons, Monroe High School, 17001 Tester Rd., Monroe In
2007,

The Washington State Legislature recognized the challenges of managing
recreational use at Reiter Foothills Forest and funded DNR's development
of a sustainable recreation plan. For the past two years, DNR has worked
with a diverse group of stakeholders-including citizens, user groups,
representatives from conservation groups, and local officials-to create
a recreation plan that identifies long-term recreation uses and
addresses problems in the area. The DNR recreation plan is here :
http://www.dnr.wa.gov/ResearchScience/Topics/SEPANonProject/Pages/amp_se
pa_nonpro_reiter_jan.aspx DNR is requesting feedback from the public
about the findings and recommendations in this plan. In conjunction with
the public review of the plan, DNR is also conducting an official State

from November 10 through December 4. For more information about the

Hey we are using a soil stabilizer at a trailhead we are building. From
the tests we have done the stuff we have it doesn't really harden as
much as coagulate and consolidate particles. We have yet to do any
major mechanical compaction on it to see if that changes anything and at
this point it may be spring before we can (snowing now). But from what
I have seen and from what I understand about the product it will do a
lot of good in reducing the dust and holding together the soils.
Actual "hardening" is still to be seen. Biggest variable is the soil
you started with, moon dust may still be moon dust at this point. All
that said I'm willing to bet (not an the eat the turd bet) that it would
improve the situation at Colonnade.

Brent is correct. As per the signage at the entrances "Trails are
closed. Graveled roads are open," just like in previous years.

I rode a long road loop there Sunday, and parked at one of the
'alternate' entrances that goes into the road network. I did see a car
with bikes unloading at 300th St though, and that entrance really
doesn't go into the road network, so there's a good chance they were
poaching trails. Didn't see anyone inside except for one lone hiker.

If you're looking to ride trails up there, Armstrong and Pilchuck
tracts' singletrack is open year round... but not Victoria Tract's.

No, that's not the prison train to Yuma. Its the runtime I got out of my
Magicshine battery tonight with the light on high beam. It was an indoors
static test. Battery had been sitting around (off the charger) for a week or
more.

I'm not the best at describing, especially something subjective like light
output which can vary to each individuals eyes.
I tried using my Gopro Hero camera to film the light, but the little camera
just can't pick up what you see in person at night. With two lights running,
I never felt like I didn't have enough light, but I'm also pretty slow.

Riding around Paradise at night with a full moon peeking behind the clouds I
was sure to run into a werewolf but only ran into a couple who were enjoying
the cool night air on their bikes as well.

I hadn't ridden single track at night before and I felt it was a whole other
way to experience the bike, it kind of felt like learning to ride for the
first time, I felt fairly clumsy. I think being able to see everything in
daylight, your eyes pick up nuances of the trail subconsciously and at night
you don't, so I didn't feel like I rode as smooth as I had riding during the
day on the exact same trails. I sort of wish the rain would hold off so that
I could go ride again, but I also want it to snow so that I can hit the
slopes. Oh the hardships of living in the PNW!

I'm with Troy and KevinA. I was out last eve at Tolt and rode at medium setting
of 500 lumens. The only time I needed the high setting was about 12-15mph on
long straight sections. Bright white center spot with nice edge fill all around
the circular lamp shape. Like Troy I ordered my 2nd unit for bars/redundancy.

Dear Susan,

I know it is not normal to organize your Christmas list by height. However, if
there is anyone on your list that is between 5'5" and 5'9"--and you really
really love them, why not get them a bike for Christmas?

We have mostly mediums left from our 2009 rental fleet of Specialized FSR XC
Comps, and they are going for $895, including shipping. All you'll need is a
bow.

Take care,
Ashley

I have a set of Hayes Nine brakes that came off of a used 2006
Heckler.
They immediately came off the bike so I can't attest to how well they
work. They do look well used though. One of the levers has some
serious paint missing. They come with 8" rotors and brackets. I also
have an original Sportworks Mod series hitch rack with both a 2" and a 1
1/4" hitch mount (please take both mounts). This is the one with the
wire type of cage for the front wheel. It works great with XC tires,
but when you get up about 2.3" tires, you have to let some air out to
get them in the tray. You can pick up the brakes either in White Center
or near U-Village. The bike rack you have to pick up in White Center.
