Hey we are using a soil stabilizer at a trailhead we are building. From
the tests we have done the stuff we have it doesn't really harden as
much as coagulate and consolidate particles. We have yet to do any
major mechanical compaction on it to see if that changes anything and at
this point it may be spring before we can (snowing now). But from what
I have seen and from what I understand about the product it will do a
lot of good in reducing the dust and holding together the soils.
Actual "hardening" is still to be seen. Biggest variable is the soil
you started with, moon dust may still be moon dust at this point. All
that said I'm willing to bet (not an the eat the turd bet) that it would
improve the situation at Colonnade.

Brent is correct. As per the signage at the entrances "Trails are
closed. Graveled roads are open," just like in previous years.

I rode a long road loop there Sunday, and parked at one of the
'alternate' entrances that goes into the road network. I did see a car
with bikes unloading at 300th St though, and that entrance really
doesn't go into the road network, so there's a good chance they were
poaching trails. Didn't see anyone inside except for one lone hiker.

If you're looking to ride trails up there, Armstrong and Pilchuck
tracts' singletrack is open year round... but not Victoria Tract's.

Mission, and Sortie bicycles with EA30 stems. The EA30 stems are black with
white-and-gray graphics and feature a four-bolt stem face cap."EA30" is printed
on the stem. EA30 stems sold as aftermarket items are included in this recall.

They were sold at independent bicycle dealers nationwide from August 2007
through August 2009 for between $500 and $1,200. Aftermarket stems were sold
from August 2007 through September 2009 for about $30. The stems were
manufactured in China.

Consumers should immediately stop riding the bicycles and contact any authorized
Easton Sports for a free replacement stem.

No, that's not the prison train to Yuma. Its the runtime I got out of my
Magicshine battery tonight with the light on high beam. It was an indoors

I'm not the best at describing, especially something subjective like light
output which can vary to each individuals eyes.
I tried using my Gopro Hero camera to film the light, but the little camera
just can't pick up what you see in person at night. With two lights running,
I never felt like I didn't have enough light, but I'm also pretty slow.

Riding around Paradise at night with a full moon peeking behind the clouds I
was sure to run into a werewolf but only ran into a couple who were enjoying
the cool night air on their bikes as well.

I hadn't ridden single track at night before and I felt it was a whole other
way to experience the bike, it kind of felt like learning to ride for the
first time, I felt fairly clumsy. I think being able to see everything in
daylight, your eyes pick up nuances of the trail subconsciously and at night
you don't, so I didn't feel like I rode as smooth as I had riding during the
day on the exact same trails. I sort of wish the rain would hold off so that
I could go ride again, but I also want it to snow so that I can hit the
slopes. Oh the hardships of living in the PNW!

I'm with Troy and KevinA. I was out last eve at Tolt and rode at medium setting
of 500 lumens. The only time I needed the high setting was about 12-15mph on
long straight sections. Bright white center spot with nice edge fill all around
the circular lamp shape. Like Troy I ordered my 2nd unit for bars/redundancy.

Dear Susan,

I know it is not normal to organize your Christmas list by height. However, if
there is anyone on your list that is between 5'5" and 5'9"--and you really
really love them, why not get them a bike for Christmas?

We have mostly mediums left from our 2009 rental fleet of Specialized FSR XC
Comps, and they are going for $895, including shipping. All you'll need is a
bow.

Take care,

I have a set of Hayes Nine brakes that came off of a used 2006
Heckler.
They immediately came off the bike so I can't attest to how well they
work. They do look well used though. One of the levers has some
serious paint missing. They come with 8" rotors and brackets. I also
have an original Sportworks Mod series hitch rack with both a 2" and a 1
1/4" hitch mount (please take both mounts). This is the one with the
wire type of cage for the front wheel. It works great with XC tires,
but when you get up about 2.3" tires, you have to let some air out to
get them in the tray. You can pick up the brakes either in White Center
or near U-Village. The bike rack you have to pick up in White Center.

With the wet and rainy season upon us (and the higher elevations in the
Cascades snowed in!) I've been visiting the lowland areas and
although wet they do have their own appeal.Riding through a thick forest
dripping with rain you feel like you're the only person in the
world.

Taylor Mountain near Hobart has over 33 miles of trails that include
some tremendous views in addition to the normal western Washington maze
of ferns and pines.

At any rate Taylor has two main access points and the rideable area has
been expanded since King Co. has acquired land that stretches from
Taylor to Rattlesnake Lake. What this means is that the view point at
the top of Taylor is legal now!

On my trips to Taylor to collect data I only saw a couple of other trail
users so if solitude is your thing then these trails may be great for
you!

That's actually a tremendously helpful tip Brian.

i've been advocating the use of soil hardeners there for ever, but nobody has
stepped up to follow through or help Westra with the sample we have.

We still don't know if the stuff works, but it's a product that is made
specifically for the purpose of hardening soil.  Using concrete just doesn't
work, if you dilute the mix with dirt it breaks down, fast, it's just basic.
Kim was suggested to try that in K line, and i told him that i would eat a dog
turd from dog park if it actually held up.  i have not eaten a turd thanks.  i
will not eat a dog turd to say that the application of soil hardener will be the
perfect solution, but i think it's our best bet.

1.  It will keep and hold shape of lips, berms, landing.  When that bike company
came in and re-did the jumps for their event and photo shoot, they complained
that the jumps were too beat up.
2. It will help control the dust issue, by strategically placing a hard cap on
trouble spots, particularly the access roads.
3. The hard cap can help prevent people from harvesting soil for pirate builds.

its frustrating when this sort of thing happens and it happens all the time,
seems that designing trails is not only about features, rolling grade dips,
sloping and armoring the norm but now designing ways to make them tamper proof
is becoming commen place.

Hey folks,

Can you help me spread the word that unauthorized digging at Colonnade just
ain't good. If you see someone digging, ask 'em what the hell they are doing.
Tell them that if they want the park closed, just keep on digging. Or if they
like Colonnade and want to see it get better, then join a work party or contact
me: mwestra@... or 425-241-7806.

The recent crap we found took Kevin and I probably 4-6 hours to fix.

Thanks for the heads up Scott. Have you talked with John, Rob and Devon
at Bicycle Centers of Everett? There are several groups of riders in the
north end; most of them pass through John's shop; good way to get the
message out.

Please pass along to every one that the trails are closed for the season. The
berms that were put in and some other trail work has already been changed back
to as close to normal as they could get it. It only takes a few trail poachers
to screw it up for every one. I know it seems like the only time I post it is
about Victoria but hey.

Hey folks,

If you can spare a few hours, we could use some help this Tuesday 11/10 in the
Duthie clearing. King County Parks is bringing in a big wood chipper and we're
going to chip up those big piles of alder branches. Starting at 10am and running
until dark. Stop by whenever you can. Whatever we don't get to on Tues, we'll
tackle on Thurs.

Thanks,
Mike

Kudos to everybody who has sent in verbose commentary.

If you don't have time for verbose commentary, here's some simple cut and
paste, pick one; the email addy and subject line are in bold below:

--

There is a standard process for creating wilderness. You are not following
it. Please follow it and allow mountain biking until the areas are declared
Wilderness by Congress.

--

The IMBA plan is a decent compromise between the need to protect open space
and access for valid back-country recreation. Please follow their plan for
mountain bike access.

--

What the heck, are you guys crazy?! Maybe a few dozen people ride mountain
bikes there each month and yet you want to ban them all? Please get a grip
before I go join some organization that will work to stop all new Wilderness
bills in the US. Thanks!

Hi:

I'm new to the group and to Seattle. I'm looking for part time work near
downtown Seattle while trying to get my business off the ground. Can anyone
suggest a bike shop that would be worth looking into for part time work, i.e.,
they're likely hiring and/or just a cool shop. I'm thinking it would be a
better alternative to still corporate REI and Northface. Thanks

The 2010 SJ FSR 29er is a bit different than years past since they're going to
longer travel and brought back the brain shock for it. It also seems to have a
slacker geometry. I've only seen the 26" version in person and am basing the
purchase decision based on specs and some interbike reviews since the bike
hasn't made it to any stores yet.

That said, I was considering the Niner W.F.O. but buying one would have
necessitated selling the Moots for financial reasons so I'm giving the
mass-market a try instead. Both are 5" front/rear travel 29ers.

disassemble the wheels and move the blingy CK hubs over to a lighter, less stout
rim.

does anyone have any experience with true wheelbuilders?
