Hey Guys,
I wanted to wish you a happy new year from France where I have been visiting
my parents.
Michelle and I have explored the Poitoux-Charente area and it's clay, clay
and clay :) I have yet to find good tires for that :)
Hey I am not complaining, I have learned how to slide forward with the bike
sideways! Talk about new skills!

Anyways, the food is good and we love it...

Wow, this is the first year I missed the New Years resolutions; where was I
when you all posted your list of wishes and commitments. Hope it's not to
late; here's mine, it's a pretty short list:>)

1). Hang in and finish school

2). At least one trip to Whistler, Silver Mt. or Mt. Hood a month; but I'm
hoping for two.

3). Enter one beginner dh race.

4). Have a plan in place to move north; I gotta get outta this place:>) .

Wishing you the very best in 2008.

I was surprised that Donald Duck wasn't too bad, just a couple big puddles
that you could skirt. I didn't even get my whole feet wet like some
years... Once coming down from Pulverizer we literally went right into a
lake and no go-around for that one! This year that lake isn't there...

Map Here:
http://monkeymike.esmartdesign.com/Banner%20map_8-06.pdf

Thanks to http://www.kitsapmtb.com/ for the map

There is a new trail, "Sidewinder", which starts at the bottom
of "Wired Brain" (opposite side of the blue gate) and connects
into "Donald Duck". It's a good way to go if you don't want to ride
any road.

Beware "Donald Duck" is usually one of the messiest trails out there
this time of year.

We just got back from riding Banner and the trails are in good condition.
We encountered some mud on Mish Mash but very minimal. The trails are wetter
than last week though. Getting out of Donald Duck to the road was the
messiest but even that wasn't too bad compared to other years. The others
we rode like San Francisco, Oakland, Pulverizer, moto area, are in perfect
condition with good traction and some slippery roots for fun times. Get out
there and ride!

Subject: Top 10 BBTC calendar faux pas

In the spirit of the classic, time-honored David Letterman Top Ten

List, it's time for. . . the Top 10 BBTC Calendar faux pas!

And yes, I'm in full realization that I've done a few (not all, but a

few) of these; we all do "funny" things some times. ;)

13. Loooooooong ride reports, that have nothing to do with the ride:>)

12. Posting rides at Secret Locations.

11. Not being clear in the ride description; when you say it's a social
paced ride, the descriptor social would infer a club standard; not your
personal day off from racing:>).

10) Signing up for your own event

9) Signing up for two events whose times overlap

8) Signing up for an event which is only open to a demographic you

don't belong to, and then announcing you're going to wear some

costume or something to fabulously impersonate that demographic

7) Leaving home for an event without having read the posting

carefully enough (like for example, to know the exact meeting place

or how firm the start time is)

6) Psoting event's with lot's of speling and punctuation error's

remember people you can alway's paste your text into MS Word or other

text editor's which have spell checker's and then paste it agian into

the BBTC site

5) Habitually bailing from events at the last minute

4) Posting an event and describing it with the tone/approach of a

Marine Corps drill sergeant

3) Posting an event (or ride report) which is 20+ lines long

without a single paragraph break

2) Posting an event which is 20+ lines long, without separating

part of it into that new "Click for more info" section

1) Posting!!! an!!! Event!!! with!!! lots!!! and!!! lots!!!

of!!! exclamation!!! marks!!!!!!!

Hi All; I wanted forward this email, incase some of you have not seen how
scammers operate. I posted a bike for sale on MTBR and Ridemonkey; below a
response I received from someone using the name of Paul Evans. I'm not 100%
sure he's a scammer, but any time you see the phrase or something close to,
"what is your firm price," start paying attention. Another tip off is, when
they say, "so we can discuss full terms and conditions before payment and
some squirrely remark about picking a bike up within 3-5 days time.

As we all know, you pick up a bike after you pay for it, what's common
sense. Anytime somebody online tries to set up anything different from pay
first, pick up bike after payment clears, either delete the email or tell
them to get lost and then forward the message to the fraud department of the
local PD or Sherriff. I'm going to email him and tell him I'm forwarding his
email to the feds for investigation; I'll follow up if I hear back.

It is great how a little white stuff can give me a whole new local trail.
Seabeck got quite a bit of snow on Christmas, the following Thursday and
there is still plenty around today-in fact it is snowing as I write this.
First the rainstorm changed my trail enormously with giant ruts and thick
deposits of sand and small rocks to work through. Then Christmas gave me a
nice clean, though wet, trail that increased the challenge a bit and dumped
me on rear when I returned to the street. Thursday things were a bit deeper
and more challenging still, and many ruts were ridable that were formerly
too rough for me. This morning, everything was ice. The brief road to the
trailhead was a white knuckler and my first attempts to ride the deeper snow
bogged me in an instant. I could break through the snow, but yielded slowly
and stole all my momentum. I thought about turning back, but I'm glad I
didn't. I fought my way through the initial deeper stuff, found some ridable
trail then hike-a-biked up the first hill and finally found ATV tracks.
Those tracks made the whole thing doable. It was still very hard work and
some of the tracks were slick as snot, but once again it was a whole new
trail. In the end I even began finding a way to make it through the deeper
stuff. I got up speed, hit the deep snow and then started rocking the bike,
alternately unweighting and reweighting the front wheel and I moved through
it pretty nicely, though it was exhausting.

If you haven't been getting out there in snow, I strongly recommend it! By
the way, I clean off every scrap of snow after each ride, dry the bike and
warm it indoors before relubing it-of course it's a single speed so cleanup
is not a problem.

Ken, these are great racks. If at all possible on your car, get the
2" version. These racks stick out a ways when down and put a good
amount of leverage on your hitch, and the 2" version should handle
the weight just fine. The 1 1/4" would probably work, but a few of
them can sag (its your receiver that sags, not the rack).

Thule is just as good at the old Sportworks. However, they only come
in 2 bike, with and expandable add-on for 4 bikes. The Sportworks
came with the same 2 bike base unit, but would expand with 1-bike add-
ons.

The old Sportworks and Thule are almost identical. However, the
tubing size is slightly different, so they're not really compatible
with each other.

I could tell you all about modifying your reciever so that an econo
car like my Impreza can handle high-speed, bumpy, power-sliding, dirt
road shuttles with 3 DH bikes - but I'll save that for another
thread :)

g'luck
Justin

Thanks Bill and Kevin. Truly a good cause and an opportunity to mesh with our
fellow equine trail users. I've posted like events at the Armstrong Tract in the
past to marginal at best response. Hopefully with a more central location and a
well known start/stop point, this will go over big.

Now that we no longer have the MS mtb ride to support, perhaps more like this
one would be a good way for the BBTC and the mtb community in general to get
together and show some support in a fun enviorinment. Let's hope for good
weather!

Thanks for posting this Kevin. From a personal point of view I can
vouch for the worthiness of Little Bit as the beneficiary. My daughter
Michelle rides at Little Bit, has for a few years now. It is great
therapy for her, and she has learned to do something she is really
proud of. I think she now has more competition event ribbons than I
ever collected for bike races :).

Little Bit is financed mostly with charitable donations.

Here's a link to a picture of her doing what she loves to do at Little
Bit.

As in "Stinky Weather". Jan 19th at 9am. Proceeds to benefit Little Bit
Therapeutic Riding Center. Full details can be found at the following webpage.

http://www.stinkyspoke.org/Home_Page.html

Basically this is one version of the Thrilla route that doesn't go through the
Watershed. I'm hoping to hook up w/ the "instigator" of the event and suggest
adding an alternate sidetrip up past the Redmond Highschool and down through the
Stoner Singletrack.

Hope this has a good turnout. I plan on being there and will add the event to
the Ride Calendar.

I'll get something up on the calendar but am planning on being out at Griffin
this Saturday for a ride starting around 10am. Going to show someone from the
Bay area some of our trails.

Yeah, the snow sliding kind. I started the off list e-mail to those who I knew
who occasionally eschewed the bike for a day of snow sliding but the list got
too long!

Conditions were amazing today for morning turns and back to work by 12:20. White
room blower.

Planning on being up at least 3 of the next 4 days if anyone else wants to get
out of the rain and into the snow.

Even Westra got some new skis! :)

Off list I guess for responses...

Anyone with experience on this brand might want to add to this:

The Marwi Nightpro Elite Single Light w/ Helmet Mount at pricepoint is $90.
I don't know anything about them, but I rode with a single, handlebar
mounted 12W halogen for quite awhile before adding a 12W on the helmet. They
are adequate. Too bad you can't find an extra $300 somewhere for that
Trinewt though. Have you tried all the vending machine coin returns, under
the seats of your parents cars or piece of cardboard with "Will work for
food" on it next to a busy intersection? Anyway here is the pricepoint link:

Hi all

shopping for a light system, problem is I am a starving college student
and I don't have 200 bucks to splash on a nite rider system. Any
sugestions? Any one have a website or ideas? I need a light that can
illuminate at least 30-100 ft and can mount to my helmet. I can afford
up to 100 bucks. thanks for your help

A few days ago I wrote that I'd have more details for you later in the
week. Looks like there may not be any more details forthcoming, but you
don't really need to know any more than what I wrote below.

Come on out, it's a ton of fun!

I got an email from a visitor up from the Bay area who wants to sample our local
trails while she's up here. I'm a bad person for not forwarding on the
information sooner. She'll be in the area until Jan 2 or 3. If anyone is doing
some day rides during the week and wouldn't mind showing off the Seattle
mountain bike trails, let me know and I'll forward on the info. This person
wasn't sure she'd have internet connectivity while she's up here.

Thankx in advance.

I have been a meet director at the bog slog before but i have never been to a
boot camp. At the bog slog you can expect about 50 people using most of the
trails. The routes are not predetermined so participants could potentially use
any trails. However, they will come through one at a time so if you are on the
trail with a newbie group you should be able to just move aside. If I came upon
you, I would just shout rider up and hope that you would move out of the way. I
would also hope that you would not be explaining something on a blind corner
where I might come around a little too fast in my feeble attempt to do well.

i am not sure how big your group would be on the trail or when you would be
there. The bog slog will last from about 9:30-1:00 and also includes runners

   Glenn
