Morning All; rise and shine; time to wake up and jump on one of the sweetest
bike deals in :>) With deep regret, I'm selling my new Specialized
Rockhopper 29er; it is a large frame and it is in PRIMO-AS NEW condition.
You can log onto the Specialized website to check out the specs and
components; it's the burnt orange colored model; this is a geared 29er.

I've never taken the bike off road; it's never seen a trail; I used it for
commuting to work; West Seattle to Downtown 2-3 days a week. I bought the
bike new on Sept 16; I've had it for just over two months; this bike is like
brand new. Sniff sniff; I hate to see it go.

The bike retails for $830.00. I listed the bike on Craigslist for 650.00 and
there are people lined up for two blocks wanting to buy this bike. However,
I'm sending them away and reserving the sale for a club member:>).

THIS WEEKEND ONLY: I will let the bike go for 600.00 and donate 50 dollars
to BBTC. Or, I will sell the bike for $575.00 and donate 25 dollars to the
club. This is a sweet deal for anyone who wants a sweet 29er bike. I'll toss
in a set of brand new Specialized 2.20 Fast Track tires. Did I forget to say
this bike has waaaaaaaay more tire clearance than most others.

FYI: I've done a lot of research on 29er bikes and I can honestly say my
bike rides as well if not better than most-that's a tall statement, but
you're welcome to take my bike for a ride and see for yourself. There is
absolutely no way to get around the fact that Specialized got it right when
they designed the new 29ers.

Please email me off list if interested; I'll send you my phone number.

More "road riding in Chicago" oriented, but kinda cool nevertheless.

I missed the last second Thrilla ride, and I was more up for a short warm loop
around Willows anyway than 26 miles in freezing wet weather. Not sure if you
added that optional part of the Thrilla. Craig, that wasn't you on the red FSR
I saw out on Willows was it?

Conditions were suprisingly good on Willows and the only cold part of the ride
was getting to and from my house on the back streets. Just a couple of dicey
spots where I erred on the side of caution. Just a couple of short stops to kick
leaves aside to better define entrances to some of the extra mileage/breath
catcher mini-loops. Biggest problem was getting soaked by wet ferns in those
temps. Thank gawd for polypro and armor, since I was just wear wearing a light
windbreaker vest and not full rain gear.

Another life saver in this weather is my pair of Swix xc-ski earmuffs, which fit
nicely under a helmet and give just enough warmth to keep the ears from getting
frosty. I never had to break out my light neck gator, which is also a must have
for this weather, but that is just due to the heat producing properties of
Willows.

I got home just a bit before The Blizzard hit our area. Not sure if that was
good or bad timing. :-)

4 others joined me today, forecast was sketchy but snow held off. There was a
dusting of
snow from a shower before the ride but the sun came out for a bit to brighten
things up.
Ride was great till my rear shock blew oil just oil, walked back from the bog
near Issaquah
Fall City Road to Grand Ridge Drive and got a ride home. Trail was in great
shape with just a
few mud pits.

Hello all.

Last month i recieved an email informing me that there are certain groups
pushing hard for Wilderness designation in the Kettle Crest Trails.

If you want continued mountain bike access to these trails please spend a little
time to email Margaret Hartzell. She is the Forest Service Departments plan
revision leader.

mhartzell@...

If you are unsure of what to write, and want to do a quick writeup just send out
an email that states you are against any designation that bans mountain bikes
and support any that allows continued bike access. Any feedback will help.

For those that have ridden here, you know that this is a special place to ride.
(Some of you have said it's some of the best trails you've ridden!) i've led
alot of big rides joining people from both sides of the state here, and we've
run into Canadian riders. This area is worth sticking up for, there is
currently no motorcycle access anyways. If you want more info on this subject
feel free to drop me an email, and i hope to start building a page for these
trails on Wiki soon.

Please take a second to jot an email, the squeeky wheel gets the grease!

What a fun ride, the trail totally kicked my ass, but i loved it and can't wait
to go back for another beating.:)

At the BBTC X-mas party i bought maps at the LBS in Anacortes which contains 3
maps Whistle Lake, Heart Lake, and Little Cranberry Lake. (by the by some
proceeds from those maps go back to the trails) It was cheesily unwrapped with
the price tag still attached, so perfect in my view. And nobody claimed it. i
noticed after the gift exchange was finished that it was left unclaimed, so i
spoke up and Barbara Green asked the entire group if anyone wanted it. Get
this... Nobody did... hahahaha..
Anyways a fairly new member finally stepped up and claimed the maps, and i'm
sure time will reveal it to be definitely the most underrated gift of all time.
The chicky birdy socks and hat was definitely the best gift, that was certainly
plain to see....:)
Anyways Mr. Alston is leading a ride there next week and i would highly
encourage everyone to hop on and experience a true gem of a ride.

Despite a lack of interest, I was determined to get out and ride the Thrilla
on Saturday. Being that no one signed up, I decided to include the snowstorm
to my ride in lieu of a riding partner. This was in good keepings of my
annual tradition to go out and ride in the face of impending atmospheric
doom. I waited until the Doppler indicated the storm was close, and set out
from my home in Kirkland to the PPT around 1pm.

More regular riding on my part made the hills easier and made for a
walk-free ride. It started to snow somewhere along the PPT and by the time I
reached the Tolt Pipeline things were nicely covered with 1"-2" of untracked
snow. Had a blast riding the ups and downs and making my own weaving tracks,
spending equal time admiring them over my shoulders as looking ahead. My
mono-chainring/cog kept me rolling despite huge amounts of snow buildup
everywhere else on the bike; Definitely would have been a nasty day for
derailleur users. Visibility sucked, with either fogged up glasses or
driving snow into the eyes. I compromised by lowering the glasses and also
lowering my helmet visor which made just enough of a slit to see out of, but
kept most the flying snow out of my eyes. Heart Attack Hill was extra spicey
but good brakes and reasonable speeds kept the rubber side down. The SRT was
also nicely frosted and I was able to follow it back to the PPT with about
10 lbs of extra snow/slush in tow. Cut up through Willows and through some
local neighborhoods, much to the apparent shock of passing drivers. I was
surprised with the traction I had going up and down the roads that cars were
struggling to negotiate. My frozen fingers and numb feet were happy to get
home.

26 miles and 2000' door to door.

OK....I've managed to post a bunch of pictures to Photobucket. It runs the
gamut from a buffalo on the Mah Dah Hey trail to a bootcamp at the Metcalf
trust. There are also some pictures you won't be interested in such as shots of
my bikes. You can ignore them. This is about 1/10th of the pictures I have. I
am not sure how to handle this other than to just give everyone the album addy.
I've left it public (I think) and if you want to put a title on the picture,
feel free. If you have any advice, feel free. I'll try to post more in a
different album shortly.

BTW...for those who have kept in touch with me, I did start riding again about
three months ago. However, two months ago...during my last moto race of the
season...I tore two ligaments in my knee and have been off the bike again.
Started easy spins this weekend, though, and hope to be going full bore next
season. Especially since I decided MTBing was more important than racing motos
and have retired from the later.

FYI, for those of you with Formula Oro brakes.

http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml08/08027.html

The fix is really pretty easy if you wanna do it yourself:

http://www.formulabrakeusa.com/recall/Lever_Pin_Recall_Repair_Instructions.p
df

FORMULA ORO DISC BRAKE SYSTEM RECALL

Your Formula Oro Disc brake system may be the subject of a safety recall. If
your bike has a Formula Oro disc brake system installed, STOP RIDING YOUR
BIKE until you determine whether your brakes are part of this recall.

The set screw which secures the pin which attaches the brake lever to the
master cylinder may come loose. If these set screws come loose, your brake
levers may separate from the brake, rendering the brakes inoperable, and you
could lose control of your bike and fall.

Check the serial number of your brakes at the brake lever. Brakes with a
serial number lower than 295237 are included. If you have an affected brake
set, bring it to the bicycle dealer where you purchased the brakes for
inspection and repair. For questions about this recall, please contact
recall@... or call toll free:

photography print sold I am donating 4% of sales back to the BBTC. Please visit
my website at www.mackieimages.com for a growing selection of unique and
inspiring adventure and landscape photographs. If you decide to purchase a print
please tell me so I can make sure the BBTC receives the help they need.

I moved to the Pacific Northwest 10 years ago, leaving behind the suburbs of
Massachusetts in search of higher mountains, desolate trails and deeper snow.
Captivated by the diversity and beauty of the Pacific Northwest, I always find
an excuse to pack up the skis, bike or sea kayak in search of a new adventure.
Unable to find the right words to describe the beauty and magic of our natural
surroundings, I choose photography to convey a unique and inspiring look at man
and the environment.

You can visit my website at http://www.MackieImages.com to view a library of
photographs. A small selection of these will be on display (and for sale)
starting this Thursday at the Globe Gallery in Pioneer Square as well. All
photographs are printed using archival inks and premium papers. Matting is
available.

Help a great cause and buy some prints (or give one to a friend) that represent
the northwest! Gift certificates are available in any amount as well.

Thank you and please contact me if you have any questions. Again, if you are
interested in buying a print just tell me you saw this email so I make sure the
BBTC receives their chunk.

Whiting Ranch was really fun and accessible for the Orange County mtn bike
riders.....I feel bad for So Cal as the San Diego fires from a year or two ago
took its toll on many great rides, I think one was called Noble Canyon.....mtn
biking is going to be challenging down there for the next few years......

Well, much to my surprise I received well over 20 replies to my initial
query. You guys do know we're going to be riding alot of SVT and Forest
Roads, right? LOL! Just kidding. Sort of.

Many of you I replied to personally, but in the interest of time here's a
mass-update for everyone.

THE PLAN
I'm going to start the series on 1/5/08 and it will essentially take place
every Saturday at 10am (barring a Seahawks home playoff game) with locations
changing each week, although I anticipate the majority of the rides at least
in the winter months to take place within the Issaquah -- Woodinville --
North Bend triangle with occasional forays to Fort Ebey, Lake Sawyer, Moran
and of course Tiger Mountain when the roads to Poo-Poo Point and West Tiger
are snow-free. Expect a gradual progression of increasing difficulty from
week to week achieved through some combination of increasing mileage,
elevation gain, and technical difficulty. I'm not going to post any rider
limits, but if the need is there, I'll post a follow-up ride for Sunday so
as to keep the groups small -- more miles for me!

THE GOAL
Fitness. Race prep. Independence. Confidence. I have a few "biggies" planned
for late sumer and early fall that I really hope to lead some people on. So
if you're wondering "where this is heading" then come along for the journey
and find out. In the meantime, I'm guessing a hundred-miler here, a
triple-crown there, and hopefully a long enough backcountry ride that will
require some true backwoods bike-camping. I also want to earn a hat at
Cascade-Cream Puff and better my 14 laps at Spokane's 24-hour race, but
that's just me. Your mileage may vary.

NOW WHAT?
We wait. I'll be out of town and otherwise busy the next few weeks, but I'll
be sure to post a full-month's schedule on the BBTC calendar at the start of
each month so everyone can see how this is going to go. The January rides
will be without rider limits and be posted as "moderate" pace but honestly I
don't expect these first few rides to be very fast. Everyone who is curious
can come on out and give it a go and I'll do my best to make sure nobody
gets left behind or lost. And if you got a single-speed, bring it. We'll
suffer together.

In the meantime, be sure to eat your Wheaties and ride your Thrillas. They
do a body good!

- Doug
