And a new workout fad was born. Take one singlespeed. Attach
BOB trailer. Strap down cooler and other assorted accouterments.
Go ride the Thrilla. Guaranteed strength workout. Email for
class schedule.

I started a bit earlier to get in front of the group and have
some mid ride refreshments ready at the top of Horse Pasture
Hill. Everyone seemed to get a kick out of the silliness and we
even dragged in two passing non-Thrilla riders. The first two
"customers" were relaxing when the two riders came down the hill.
As they were passing us, one "customer" called out, 'We have
cold drinks' and immediately we heard the sound of squealing
brakes as the quickest mountain bike u-turn in history was
executed.

Once we had all gotten a little bit of refreshment, the group
headed on w/ the ride. Its been quite awhile since I've ridden
w/ a loaded BOB trailer and I think I had the weight distribution
a bit off. Nothing I couldn't handle but it didn't ride as well
as I thought it could. Coming down one of the bigger hills I
probably topped out around 30mph or so. Started to get a little
bit of trailer feedback at that speed.

Last of the summer ... I had brought along my lights figuring I'd
be a bit slower and was glad I did. It was nice riding along at
that time of the evening w/ bats flittering overhead, a bright
half moon in the southern sky and a burning orange sunset.
Twilight is a great time to be out on the bike.

I posted an explore hike/gnarly ride for Saturday
9:30 in Monroe.

Last dependable weekend for swimming so I wanted to check out this
lake. I don't know how cool it is but there is an awesome waterfall
coming off it. This is a trip to the lake above Reiter Pit. We will
only ride for about an hour, and then hike ~3 miles to the lake.
HIke back and ride back down. Hopefully only about 4 hours total
including swimming.
This lake is visited only by people with gnarly 4*4's who also like
to hike, which is not many people.
This is more of an exploration than a Pit ride. The ride will be
some dirt road climbing, some fun singletrack, and then the Road of
Woe ! - One of the most technically challenging rock climbs in the
state. And what goes up must come down, and we finish with some
gnarly downhill trail.
So the mountain biking we will be doing will be very extreme, but
you can always walk - its not like you'll be going any faster then
the ones riding, and only about an hour will be riding. So
intermediate riders are welcome as long as they don't mind pushing a
bit.

Meet at the smokestack in Monroe at 9:30, and its another 25 minutes
to the pit.

One other note - I DO NOT run Stans in mine. Never saw a need to.

I run the UST Nevegals on Crossmax XL rims, and have been very happy
with both the tires and the rims.

I put the Nevegals on last November, and have almost 700 trail miles
on them. In that time, I have had exactly one flat tire (and that
was last saturday). Pretty good dependability and durability!

I love them!!! I only wish they came in a larger size for the tubless.
The Nevagals rule! I also like the Maxxis Minion 2.5 DH Tubeless. I have a
Brand new Pair of Kenda 2.5's that I can't wait to try though.

My short lived dream of racing one of this beast was squelched by the
fact I am a parent. I bought from the shop owner of Singletrack Cycles
in North Bend after he raced it for that summer. There are maybe 600

Hi Everyone, BBTC is looking for new office space. It needs to be donated,
and we will be moving out of our current space on October 1.

We've taken steps to make it really easy for you to let us use your spare
space with no delay or hassle when you need it back. Phone lines are
usually the tethers that make it hard to move fast. Since we knew we'd have
to move, we switched over to VOIP (phone over internet) so we can have our
phone line anywhere there's a high speed internet connection.

All we need is room for 2 people to work, a few file cabinets and access to
high speed internet. BBTC will move out with no notice if you need your
space back. It's that simple! If you have an extra office this is a great
way to support mountain biking and gain some visibility for your company.

Criteria:
Size: enough for 2 people with desks and a few cabinets. Space for a
volunteer would be a plus.
Sound: it needs to be moderately quiet, we spend a lot of time on the phone
Utilities: We just to be able to plug into high speed internet. We have
our own hubs, cables, etc.
Location: Seattle - Bellevue. Easy bike commute is a plus!

I want to send out a heart felt thanks to Cascade Bicycle Club for donating
office and conference room space to us for the last 2+ years! We couldn't
have grown the way we have without your generosity.

Please pass this on to anyone you know who may have extra space.

Thanks,

Once again another good report on Boot Camp. There must be 3-4 of them out there
now. And, a segment on Evening Magazine from a few years back where Rachel,
Dave, and Greg did their thing for the camera.

Good stuff. Instructing Boot camp is a blast too.

I'm hoping to go in early October with my wife and dogs and just do a little
camping, kayaking on the bay, and a lot of mountain biking. Wasn't planning
on posting it simply because it's so up-in-the-air due to business travel
this fall. If I post it, it would have to be short notice.

I lived in Durango for six or seven weeks in 2003 and managed to bike quite a
bit. The best trail (aside from the ones you mentioned: the classics) for an
out-and-back, that you can ride as long as you'd like, is the continental divide
trail. It runs from the north part of the state (I believe Rocky Mtn Nat'l
park) to Durango. You can pick it up on a few places, but I picked it up where
it is down low (about 7500') about 2 miles southwest of town (as with most of
the trails, any local bike shop could help with directions).
For something entirely different, if you only have 45-90 minutes during some
point in your trip, and you don't want to even leave town, I liked "Animas City
Mountain." The trailhead is toward the north end of town a couple of blocks the
highway headed to purgatory (er, "durango Mtn Resort," my mistake. Rrr.) It
climbs up a ridge that has a gorgeous view of the silver dollar highway as it
climbs up over Molas (10,500') and Coal Banks (11,000'-ish) passes, the local
river valley, and the adjacent ridges. It's sorta like the palisades trail near
Mt Rainier, except a round trip of 6 or so miles, and the climb is only about
800-1000.' Sadly there is no Rainier.

Dan Doran
PS Fall comes sooner in the high country of colorado; a weather change can
bring snow even in september, but a beautiful day is a beautiful day. Enjoy the
altitude, trails start at around 7,000'.

I heartily agree with Randy. Hole in the Ground is definitely a fun trail to
ride in Tahoe.

Gotta second the WTB Weirwolfs - mine are UST and I run them at about
35psi with great results in wet, dry, mud, sand whatever. Any trail
problems I've had have been my own, not the tires.

My wife and I are heading to the Durango area for a month of September
riding. Any recommendations for advanced singletrack rides besides the
well known (Hermosa Creek, Horse Gulch, Colorado Trail)?

Many thanks for any pointers!

Anyone interested in riding Kachess this weekend? Sat., Sun., or Mon.? Let me
know what day
works for you and I'll post it on the calendar. (I'm signed up for rides Sat.
and Sun., but
Kachess is more appealing to me so I'll sign-off those rides if I get a taker or
two for either of
those days.) I rode Kachess twice last year so I *should* know the way and I
have map and GPS
track. But I'm definitely not a human GPS like some folks. Haven't ridden it yet
this year and
want to. With the rain the past few days to cut down dust and the forecast for
this weekend,
should be ideal.

Would want to shoot for a reasonably early start (by 10 or earlier) to avoid
heat. And especially
if we ride Mon. to be ahead of traffic.

Let me know if you're interested.

Wendy

We ended up with 6 riders last night on perfect trail conditions, the chance of
rain must have scared everyone off.

It looks like many of the obstacles (Logs, Deep ravines, etc) have been removed
or filled in, maybe they did that for the race they had there a few weeks ago.
Even so it does not take away from the fun that can be had on this trail system.

The trail is not all that technical and is just a fun place with lots of flow
with little climbs and descents. We only ran across one other rider all
evening. It got a bit dark around 7:50, but could still get by with the lights
off.

The rain did not come until about a half hour after we finished our ride, what
timing.

There is a good chance I won’t be making next Tuesday ride, since Steph flies
back then, but Charlie has stepped up and posted another Beaver ride for
Tuesday. Thanks Charlie.

There is also another Beaver ride posted for an up coming Sunday for those that
want to check it out, but can’t make the week night rides.

Panaracer Fire XC for Summer and for Winter Kenda Nevegal in Rear and Kenda Blue
Groove in the front. That has been the best setup for me.

I find that Kena Blue Groove doesn't do well in powder conditions, but did great
in wet conditions.

You're probably going to get innundated with recommendations for the Kenda
Nevegals as they seem to be the unofficial tire of BBTC (there's a
fundraising idea) these days. I haven't tried the Nevegals, but I do really
like the Continental Vertical ProTractions that I've been riding. They're
not cheap but they have a great tread pattern that has been well-suited for
spring and summer and I expect to be just fine for fall riding too. The only
time I've had them slip was going about 22mph into a tight, sharp turn with
a lot of loose sand. I washed out each day doing that on the Ape Canyon &
Lower Falls rides. I forgive the tires though, as I'm pretty sure it was a
user error on both washouts. I was hesitant to buy them since they're
reported at 2.35 width, which is really wide for me, but they're much closer
to 2.2 or maybe 2.25. Definitely not wide.

I recently bought a Stumpjumper but don't seem to like the stock tires that
came with it.
What do you guys recommend for an all-around tire suited for semi-dry riding
in this area of PNW?

Yes the side walls are way to thin, I've torn a front and rear.

From: KevinA <mtnwuff@...>
I was going to get a Nevegal for a new front tyre but read a lot
of reports about the sidewalls being really thin and susceptable
to rips. I wasn't eager to repeat my sidewall rip experience on
a new $35 tyre.

My favorite tyre for this area would be the ones known as "free".
Not having that option at the moment, I went w/ a Kenda Kenetics
2.35 for a front tyre and a Smoke for the rear. Decrease the air
pressure to about 20-25psi in the front and 30psi in the rear.
