Thanks Peter, I'd expect nothing less from The Hammer.

Is anybody writing up your trip? Seems something interesting must've

Ok, so here's the story on last weekend...

Riding in Leavenworth had a mellow feel this time. No hectic
planning, just get the bike out and have fun.
A bit on the chilly side but I guess the weather could have been
worst.
I thought I'd see more of you there but yet got to meet some new ppl
and saw some of you I hadn't seen since last year.

It wasn't until too late that I got a message from Stephen saying he
and a bunch others would meet him and Debbie for DevilsG on Sat
morning. He left me many messages with a few changes in plans to
ride Sunday which ended up not working out for me since Igor and I
had already hit the Gulch the day before and had other plans...
also, I dedicated Monday for family stuff only and missed his group
entirely.

Anyway, Igor's brand new Giant got together with my "HolyCross"
(that's SantaCruz fer ya'll gringos) for a good old fashioned
Leavenworth style mixer.
Saturday, we waited for Stephen to show up but finally at 11:20 we
decided to get started, so we did my usual figure8 loop up DevilsG.
The creek crossings were just enough to make them fun without having
to soak your feet. Up along the sweet switchbacks for a back-numbing
delight to the top where it got cold fast. A couple others arrived
but we continued up to the road. We went across and took the
traverse with a little exploratory of a DH trail near the Ski area;
then, back for a relentless climb up to Clara and Marion Lakes where
upon arrival we pushed through a little snow but enough to make it a
pleasant contrast before bombing down by the skree field towards
BeeHive Rd where we climbed to the Mission Ridge trailhead and dove
into Upper Mission for our roller coaster ride. Or so we thought...
Blowdowns galore in that section now, so unless you like the
multiSport challenge like us you might wanna leave it be for another
time. Back at the intersection and up to the higher Mission where we
found the wind was practically blowing us off the skinny downhill
ribbon on the ridge and manualing, at times, got sketchy with the
higher gusts kicking our front wheels off trail. Further down we hit
the switchbacks and it was all rail, rail, rail your bike, gently
down the trail... and back down before the final coolin' of the discs.
It was a new experience on that loop for both... full disc brakes and
5" of sweeet travel were just what the doctor ordered...

On Sunday we took it easy and we hit one of the other "free-fun"
trails. The kickers were a great addition to the upper trail and
after some searching for the rest of the trail, we heard voices and
found some guys at the road gap and saw what a buttery tranny it's
got... way smoother and longer run out than SideShow. They
graciously let us join them on the descent and soon we found
ourselves lovin' it in the thick of things... We didn't have the
FullFace nor pads but it's not a "holy crap, that's insane" kinda
trail... although you do have to have your sh!t dialed in on some
sections, and next time, the Dare will be in full force...
The views on this trail are magnificent and the
We came onto the ArmPit and other cool side features that challenge
one's skill.
The lower trail just rips along a verdant gulch with optional wall
kickers strewn for good measure before being upchucked at the road
like a bad VanDeKamp's fish stick (I'm ashamed to have found out what
these are- back in the college years)
"Grrreat trail", I says to the gang... before they kindly shuttled me
up for my Jeep while on their way for a second helping.

In retrospect, Igor did put a scare on me a couple of times with
involuntary dismounts but was relieved to see him work those PhD
brains and walk the more hairball stuff, FOR NOW... even though
walking down that rock face on his commuter SPD's with 70ft cliffs on
the sides looked to be just as treacherous from were we stood to
watch him... glad I opted to keep my SPD's on the pedals and merely
risk the lesser of two evils (impaling upon a steep 6ft roll)...
scary but good stuff, indeed...
But regardless, as you know, he's ultra sharp and will catch on quick
now that he will be staying with us in Seattle :) ...unfortunately,
Canadia will still elude him for a while 8(
It was great to see the emotions he displayed regarding his new toy
during those two days of riding. All ranging from uncertainty and
bewilderment to utter joy.
The stealth of a light bike vs. the plush and acertivness of travel
and stability in a Freerider still lingered... "the meaning of MTbike
life"... like a mental tug'o'war tearing the fabric of his being. My
friend, relaxed and able, acknowledged that in this war both sides
were winners.
It's always great fun riding with him...
I expect you guys will be catching him in major action soon !

I wanted to ride at Tiger this morning, but after hearing how wet and muddy it
is as well as how the rocks were attacking innocent bikes, Jessica G and I
decided to ride over at Victor Falls instead.

I got to the lot at the X-mas tree farm and an older gentleman walking his dog
stopped by the truck and asked if I was going looking for the cougar over on the
east side - apparently he and his wife found tracks in the mud yesterday while
walking on the road.....nice....A few minutes later Jessica and I started off
toward the gate on the West side of Victor....

We rode most of the usual stuff, down through "Deer Park" and then the "Rookery
Ridge" over to "Cut Your Bars", then we rode "Twilight Zone" (I made it out once
again!!) and "Crossover" out to "End Around" and up to the paved road. Then we
crossed the road into cougar territory. I was trying to find the "look out" so
we could get a view of Mount Rainier, but it was not to be. Instead we had a
lesson in why I have not volunteered to lead rides....I got lost. Not really
lost, more like misplaced. I knew in general where we were but could not find a
familiar landmark after "Happy Valley", to save my life....So we rode some
unfamiliar trails until we came to a larger "road/trail" and followed that out
to the paved road south of the tree farm. We stopped a van, made sure we were
headed in the right direction and rode up the paved road a short distance back
to the entrance for Route 66", a quick climb up 66 led us to the "lookout" that
is right before elevator and while I was trying desperately to catch my breath -
Jessica pointed out a Bull Elk in the meadow just down the road behind us - he
was just standing there looking at us. He had antlers that were still in velvet,
but he didn't stand around long enough to let us count "points" It was a pretty
sight though.

So all in all we had a good couple of hours out on the trails. Only real problem
(besides my getting us misplaced) was the brush is getting thick on the trails
in the forest and we both had trouble, not once but numerous times with pretty
good sized sticks that seemed to want to "joust" with us. There was a time I
thought for sure the stick was going to win....but we won each contest. I guess
that trails out there aren't seeing enough riding to keep the brush at bay....

It was a great day to be riding.......

Andy,

Honestly, I don't know the answer. As our company doesn't do any me-too
products, such as cross bars and towers, I don't know too much about
that stuff. I'd like to research your question and find out the answer.
I do know that compared to Factory cross bars, Yakima and Thule are
stronger. That is why we have a 50lb limit on our rack that is
compatible with those, and a 40lb per bike limit on our rack that is
compatible with OEM & Factory cross bars.

For OEM & Factory cross bars, it's important to check the manufacturer's
load bar rating in the owner's manual.

I hope this helps and I'll try to get feedback from our rack specialty
stores about your inquiry.

Thanks again.

Eric

It's great to see the sun shining!

Eric can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the recommended weight
limit for the roof of a particular vehicle is not based on the fact
that the rack will "fall off" the vehicle but that the risk of roll over
during emergency driving maneauvers (e.g. swerving to miss a tire at 70+
mph coming down I-90) is greatly increased by the excess weight on the
roof. This is especially true of cars that already have a high center
of gravity without gear on the roof.

I can squeeze 3 Sportworks Bob Ratchet racks (and 3 freeride bikes) on
top of my little Subaru impreza. Its a tight fit with all 3 bikes, but
it works well. I just had to make sure they're staggered a bit so the
handlebars don't hit each other. I got sick of messing with 20mm axle
adapters, and it turns out that 8" front rotors don't work with "disk
specific" fork mount racks most of the time until you bust out your
favorite hack saw. I've also been running more than the recommended
weight limit for my car's roof rack, and it hasn't fallen off yet.

If I did it again, I'd get a hitch mount sportworks rack (like the one
Jennifer has). Better gas mileage and no lifting. Speaking of gas
mileage - what's up with $2.45 at the pump?

Gonzzz,

We have the Factory Bob, which is only good for bikes up to 40lbs and is

compatible with most factory cross bars. You need to check the load bar

rating of your car manual to figure our how many you can put on top of

the car. Usually 2, sometimes 3.

If you can go with a Yakima or Thule rooftop system, our Bob Ratchet is

compatible with either cross bar, and holds bikes up to 50lbs. (I guess

you'll have to find the correct towers and clips that will work if you

don't have gutters) Justin Vander Pol uses a bunch of these, and tons of

I would agree that some of the rock sections are a little gnarly. This seems
to be concentrated at the top. Some of the rocks have been displaced and
stick out in odd ways. I think this must frequently happens in the really
muddy, flatter sections. Maybe this is because there was not a solid
foundation to lay the rocks on. They just get pushed and rotated around in a
mud pit. Perhaps two layers would have been better than one in these
especially flat, muddy areas. On other sections of the trail, I think the
rock has worked beautifully. I am a believer.

For the places where it is currently a little troublesome, it is either rock
or mud. I think ultimately, the rock will have to work since the mud
doesn't.

Paul and others that wonder about the rock on Tiger,

1st off, It is really a bad deal what happened to the bike,
especially if it was a demo.

When we first started using rock in our trail work parties at Finn
Hill 9 years ago there were comments that we were creating a gravel
path. We used much smaller .6" crushed rock back then. The evolution
to the big rock was to get a solid base upon which the fines from
our tires will eventually fill in the gaps. At Finn Hill the action
of all the tires over the crushed rock made it so you can't even
tell we ever put rock "under" the trails.

The larger rock was chosen for Tiger for its ability to create a
sturdy platform, much like riding in Moab, Utah. Eventually you'll
hopefully lose track that there is rock under your tires on the PRT
after the dirt has time to settle in the cracks and maybe a few of
the stones get rearranged so they knit themselves together better.

That said I'll soon be joining in again to help keep the efforts to
harden the trail moving forward.

So give it a year and give us another report.

I can show you receipts summing hundreds of dollars for repairing damages
incurred on trails without crushed basalt, and scars to match.

Machinery breaks very easily when it's outside a dry, clean workshop. Especially
little slices and slivers of exposed aluminium. It's just part of the sport,
much to the delight of the component manufacturers.

(I guess
you'll have to find the correct towers and clips that will work if you
don't have gutters) Justin Vander Pol uses a bunch of these, and tons of
pro's like Leech, Bourdon, Shandro, and Shaums March do as well.

Reviews for this product are on www.gearreview.com & www.dirtworld.com

Sportsrack on Aurora is very knowledgeable and they carry our stuff,
too.

Thanks,
Eric

Speaking of racks, what would you recommend for a downhill bike (20 mm

Hey ya'll,

Gregg's and SuperGo both have stock of these and I checked their
websites this morning. Both places have the rack on sale for $30 off
this week.

You can also check our dealer locator, as we have many wonderful shops,
like Bicycle Centers in Everett, Downhill Northwest downtown,
Woodinville Bicycle & Center Cycle in Renton just to name a few others
that have stock of Sportworks, are knowledgeable about our products and
give top-notch service..

Also, REI has our racks as well in Seattle. If you go to another
location, use their STS (Ship-to store) program and they will ship it to
the store you are at for free.

We have a new rooftop rack, the Factory Bob that works with Factory
cross bars (Bob B uses this) and also a new rack for Pick-up trucks, the
Insta-gater. We also have a fairly new FreeRide and Downhill rack out
for 40-50lb bikes.

If anyone has questions, please give me an email and I'll help.

Thanks for your consideration. Unlike 99% of most other car racks that
are made overseas, ours is made in the USA, right here in Woodinville.

Also, I enjoyed the Devil's Gulch ride on Saturday; I'm posting a few
pictures to the site at 5pm.

Even without the 10% discount the Sportworks rack is worth every penny.
While my friends are disassembling their bikes, or twirling clamps on
their hitch mounts or soiling their upholstery as they stuff their bikes
into their trunks, I'm relaxing, or watching them in my rearview mirror
as I head to dinner or home. The Sportworks rack makes every other rack
seem like tying your bike to your roof with your intestines. No offense
intended to owners of other racks but I love my Sportworks.

Full disclosure: Eric recently gave me a very cool Sportworks shot
glass, but I don't think it influenced my feelings about the rack.

The questions posed to the group:
I need a new seatpost.
What is the strongest design? Is the single bolt clamp strong enough? Is
there a moderately priced post that's tough? Which finish won't rub off and
look
nasty after a couple of muddy rides.
Reply off-list and I'll post the info to the list in one message.
Thanks
Norman

The responses:

Just get a thomson seatpost and never worry about it
again!  I've been running thomson seatposts for ages
and never had one problem with them
-Jason

Norman, there's only one seatpost out there worth having: Thompson
Elite.  The best $80 you'll ever spend on your bike this side of a Chris
King headset.
-Kelly

KAlloy are plenty strong enough, and at $15, you can get 5 of them for the
price of one Thompson !
-Peter

Thompson
-Eric Stobin

I have had excellent success with Answer and Thomson seatposts.
Best of luck,
-Kevin

one word:  THOMSON!!    everyone seems to rave about 'em, supposed to be way
strong, so I decided to invest in one.  (about 90 bucks).
seatpost breakage stories are some of the scariest I've heard...   :O
-Ethan

I'm a big fan of the 2 bolt clamp. I've had a few problems with the single
bolt holding, in particular the Tom Ritchey style post.
My current fav' is the Thomson.
-Roger

Best = Thomson Elite ($80) black or silver
Good/Cheap = Rockworks ($30) silver only
Both are 2 bolt, stay away from single bolt if you are doing any jumping
(sooner or later you will land hard on the seat and strip the ridges that
hold a single bolt system in place. With 2 bolt systems the bolts hold the
seat in place; a lot stronger.
-David Krattli

If you want a post that you will never have to think about again, get
a Thomson. They offer them in straight and setback desgins (importatn
option depending on how slack your seattube is) and are insanely easy
to dial in with the two bolt seat clamp design. I've had a number of
different seatposts on various bikes and the Thomson has been far anda
way the most satisfactory. When the one that came with my Superlight
gives up the ghost, I'm going to replace it with a Thomson.

Thanks for the info.

I purchased a TIMEX HELIX about a year ago from Campmor for $60. It has
altimeter, barometer, etc. You get what you pay for... I had to send it
back for a replacement about 6 months after purchase when water got inside
during a shower. The replacement came but immediately needed a new battery
($25). Campmor agreed to credit me for the battery but I had to find a
place that would do the work or send the watch to them for 6 weeks.

Now the battery is dying again. It works, but all together fairly
unreliable.

Spend an extra $40 and go for the casio.

The 10% discount was for a 12 month period and this was over a year ago.

There is no BBTC discount at present.

Monday, including Sportworks bikeracks for 20% off. The way I

wrong, but I doubt the discounts can be used together. Is this true

I rode Tiger yesterday. Took the fire road up and the single track
down. I was demo'ing a '04 Giant VT1. Very nice all mountain bike and
much different than my Jekyll 1000. Anyway, I was riding about half way
down Preston and one of those rocks that we have been using to shore up
the trail decided to pop up and push my rear derailleur into my spokes.
By some miracle the derailleur and spoke survived but not without
causing some very serious adjustments to be made. I basically rode a
single speed back to the lot.

Disclaimer. I am in no way be-little the efforts of everyone who helps
maintain the trails at tiger. I have done some work myself but I always
feel like it's not enough. I seriously commend the efforts that go on
at Tiger.

So the trail was about as wet as I have ever seen it. Pretty much
riding in the middle of a small stream all the way down. There are a
lot of sections where the "Rocks" have been placed and have provided a
very nice stable piece of trail. However, there are many other rock
sections that are in need of serious repair. You can tell a lot of
effort goes into placing these rocks and you can also tell that a lot of
on-going maintenance is required to make these areas safe for you and
your bike.

I am really very much on the fence about these rocks being used in the
riding lines and cant decide if they are friend or foe. I understand
that it keeps the trail intact but at the expense broken bike and body
parts? Has anyone had similar experience with these sections?

-Paul

Hey Group I finally got all my low res. pictures up yesterday. Didn't
load the high res. ones but at least there is plenty there.
Took my daughters boyfriend on a ride yesterday (newby), we did the
White river trail and Skookum for a loop, and I couldn't believe after
the rains that Skookum wasn't all that muddy, trail was good.
Sorry I didn't make the devi'ls gulch Saturday, the weather report said
the snow level would be down to 4,000ft. Did it snow anywhere on the
ride? So I bailed.
