I haven't seen any ride report from today, but I'm fairly certain LOTS of
you were out riding today. What a beautiful spring day it was. The first
time in a long time I came back to the car with completely dry feet! And I
didn't have to hose down my bike before I took it inside either. Saw lots
of roadies with shorts on. Signs of spring are all around us.

A few dry days did wonders to Tokul trails. Lower trails are still bogged
from horse use, but upper trails were in steller condition! I went to work
on Beaver Pond trail, but I got sidetracked and didn't get to do much
maintenace. BUT!! Now there is a bypass around that foot-deep puddle at
the 2nd entrace to the Beaver Pond loop. I didn't bother to fix the 1st
entrance because it gets too much horse traffic. So if anyone goes out and
do that trail, don't take the 1st entry you come to but keep on going
straight and just before the 2nd entry, you'll see a bypass. Hopefully
that bypass will stay above the water in the wet season so we don't have to
submerge hubs in the water. That has long been my peeve, so I'm glad I
finally got around to it.

We will need to do some serious work on the lower loop trails if those
trails are to be used for MS Ride. Sad to say, the only trail rideable the
entire way was Sgt Well, which is holding up remarkablly well. I did see a
moto track onto the technical section of Sgt Wells but apparently it turned
around when it got too narrow cuz there was a nice round skid mark. Those
monkeys. Anyways, there will be some trail parties coming up in April/May
to fix some of the problem spots, so I hope to see some of you then!

Mire

I'm about to move to W Seattle. I have previously used Gregg's since I'm
near Green Lake. What LBS's do people recommend using in W Seattle (near
the Fauntleroy and California intersection if possible)?

Cheers

         VioSport Adventure Cam Kit -

         Extra Camcorder battery - $40
UV Filter (Keeps the main lens from getty dirty or scratched) - $10
Cleaning Kit(lens cleaner and brush) -$5
         4 60 minute Tapes (Enough tapes for a long weekend) - $15
AC/DC Charger (Charger for camcorder batteries so I can charge a
battery while using the camera instead of using the camera as the charger) -
$30
8 Monster 1800Ma AA NnHi batteries (To power the viosport helmet
camera) - $40
8 position Charger (So I can charge the AA batteries) - $20
Medium Camcorder bag (To carry everything) - $30
Small Camera bag (Compact case to hold the vital equipment needed
during a ride) - $20

Whole thing cost: $840

I already had a IEEE-1394 fireware card, cable and drivers for use with my
wifes camcorder so I was set to digitally move the videos onto my computer.
I use Microsoft Movie Maker V.2.0 for capturing and editing the video - It
comes free with Microsoft XP. I downloaded a freeware program called
TMPGEnc that converts Microsoft WMV(ASF) files to MPEG so I can use my CD-RW
burner to create video CDs which can be thrown into most DVD players. Each
Video CD can support 70 minutes of video/Audio. The quality is awesome.

Let me know if you want any more info.

Aaron's Bicycle Supply is a small shop that is pretty well stocked and
seems to have a very knowledgable staff. They mostly concentrate on
commute bikes rather than mountain bikes, but did appear to have
service equipment and small parts for disk brakes and other MTB
components.

They are on California south of the Fauntleroy intersection.

I don't live anywhere near there but went to test ride a Heron Touring
and then bought a bunch of small parts in a followup visit after
purchasing a used Heron Touring frame.

Mother nature smiled down upon us today. We had 8 hearty bright eyed
and bushytailed souls show up for our Paradise work party. Several
regulars (Bob, Armando, Greg, and Julie) and three new recruits (Gary,
John, and James). Bob showed up early and brushed several hundred feet
of trail until his light died on him and then he just had to sit
patiently (not easy for Bob) waiting for the sun to come up so he could
continue. Bob worked on "middle east" while I worked on "north east".

The rest of the gang were scheduled to show up at 09:30. Unfortunately
someone had been watching a little too much CNN and pulled one of
Cent-Com's "Area Denial" maneuvers on us and so our troops were
scattered all over when we could not get to the designated rendezvous
location. Not to worry, these special forces knew just what to do - get
on the radio and scream for help. By 10:00 we had revised the plan and
deployed the teams in 3 directions. One team went to the water tower
area to establish a much need jeep trap. The other two groups ascended
upon the Ridge trail. We ultimately cleaned out lots of mud holes, and
hauled 15 - 20 loads of rock to armor some of the bigger holes. We also
found some "available" materials and built two ground level ladder
bridges through a seeping spring area and another boggy area. All in
all, much work was accomplished and we got to meet three new bikers and
trail workers. John was apparently so impressed by our efforts, that he
volunteered to buy the additional gravel (topping layer) that we need in
several spots. How cool is that? WAY COOL !!! Come to think of it, I
am not sure if he was really all that impressed or if he was just so
determined not to schlep 100 lb loads of rock up that damn trail again
and this was his way of buying his way out of that rotation.
Regardless, it rocks. Rocks - get it? So a big thanks to all who
showed up and helped out. And a big thanks to all of you reading this
who I know are just itching to sign up for the next work party at
Paradise. See you on the trail

Valerie,

There is never a good weekend to plan anything without someone else being
busy.
I am just running with the 4th because I will be available and no one else
is stepping up to organize it on a different day.

As Ken said, it's early enough in the season before the campout weekends get
going and late enough that the trails may be semi-dry.

Chicago? As Tammy said, remember those who may still be in Moab and might
not make it! ;)

Going to get it on the schedule today.

Just posted.

Come on out and kick off the "unofficial" start of the riding season
together. For some reason, the event did not occur last season and we can't
let that happen again, now can we?

Looking for more help to organize. Thanks Kat, for stepping up!

It's "Pot luck" so, bring your favorite dish to share and energize the
group for the rides. Do I see a "homemade trail bar recipe" competition
here?

Ride leaders, post your rides seperately on the schedule, so that riders can
sign up for that specific ride. Robert, here's your shot for a Griffin/Tokul
Loop.

Bring the family, your bikes, and we'll provide the good time!

Please sign up and I hope to see you all out there. Please feel free to
contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Anyone want to do this? I'd be willing to enter said competition. Who would
like to be the 'impartial' judge? I'd be willing to do the dis-organization of
such a thing if there's enough interest.

A number of times. It is my favorite ride in Southwestern Utah. Little
Creek Mesa offers more adventure, Grafton Mesa offers extreme riding (the
Red Bull Rampage is near here) and there are many fun, accessible,
cross-country rides, but Gooseberry tops all others for ambience and sheer
   fun.

Of the well-known trails, the South Rim is harder than the North Rim, and
has more slickrock. The North Rim features more single track on the rim
of
the mesa. My favorite trails are Hidden Canyon and the bypass for the
sand
   pit on the South Rim.

There are (at least) two somewhat hidden trails on the South Rim. One is
supposed to be a very technical alternate route for part of the South Rim.
I found it once, but have never ridden it. The other is a new trail being
built by the brothers, Mike and Morgan Harris, who laid out most of the
existing trails. For more info, pay a visit to Dean Williamson at Bike
Zion
(buy a map, a cap, and chat with one of the real characters of the local
bike scene) in Springdale, or perhaps you'll get lucky and run into one of
   the brothers on the trail.

I will be out there myself during the week of April 14, my son's Spring
   Break. I can hardly wait...

Fruita does indeed rule. Joe's Ridge was one of the best rides I have
been on and definitely ranks high on my list. If you have the chance,
scoot over there on your way back or down. There is a guy who made a
neat little video of his ride down it, here (down towards the bottom)<
      http://www.petefagerlin.com/video_gallery.htm>.

Unless.....this an attempt to keep people away from Fruita in order to
alleviate crowding... Wait, I change my mind. Bad biking, don't go
there! Your tires will pop, heck I even got a flat tire. And it's hot
      too. Bad Fruita! Bad fruita!

It's not exactly down to the wire yet, but we're getting there. Due to the
fact that I will be taking classes this coming quarter, I won't be able to
have the same vacation schedule as the rest of you might. I will also be
going down to Santa Fe, New Mex. to visit some friends. So, I will be in
Moab the 25th through the 29th, and would love to hook up with y'all
eventually. Coordinating meeting places and times could be a pain, but I
figure the easiest thing would be if we all exchanged cell phone numbers and
then we can all get a hold of eachother when we're in Moab.

That said, my number is 206-459-2853. See ya there...hopefully.

I have been wanting a light for a couple years but can't afford it. As
long as you are taking up the cause, could you add my name to the list.
I want a Lights & Motion ARC HID. Looking forward to joining you on a
night ride soon. Thanks

Jeff

I have someone who's interested in doing one of my training rides but
he's not sure about the lights he has. I was wondering if anyone had a
light that they'd possibly be willing to loan him for a ride? He lives
in Bothell.

Thankx for your time in advance.

Here's a link to some pictures from this weekends ride in the eastern WA area
(Tri-Cities & Yakima).

http://forums13.consumerreview.com/crforum?14@90.Jh8Pam0zwRc.4@.efa0c10

We had really good weather (71 on Saturday and 78 on Sunday), some of us got a
suntan ... some a sunburn, revisited some old haunts for me and rode some new
places. I think that everyone had a good time.

Finley Hills riding was kinda surreal. The east side is open to motorized use
and anything else a rural community can think up (guns & trash dumping) while
the west side is fenced off and only open to non-motorized use. Its been three
years since I've been back and there used to be some fairly good riding on the
east side. When we pulled up, there were several people out shooting rifles
and pistols. I'd thought that the area was supposedly offlimits for that but
even if it is, the sheriff doesn't pay too much attention to it. Where we were
riding was going to be out of the line of fire so we started off riding on the
east side. Most of the trails I remembered no longer existed or had been eaten
up by orchard expansion. We kept running into groups of shooters everywhere we
went on the east side! Rolland even took a pic that looks like it came right
out of Bosnia or something. Like riding through a war zone. One guy shooting
a 30-06 rifle (not a bad shot either) even had this shirt saying "F**k Iraq".

Glad we didn't stay there overnight. :)

Sunday were stopped of at Yakima to ride Cowiche Canyon. Dang good singletrack
out there. Tons of wildflowers were in bloom as well. A kinda sketchy descent
into the Douglas Creek canyon to ride the rail trail was pretty fun. Throw in
a rattlesnake at the bottom and we had a darn tooting good time. The climb out
was good and stiff but manageable. More swoopy stuff on the other side rounded
out our weekend. Sun warmed faces stiff from grinning all around!

Highly recommend Cowiche Canyon if you're in the Yakima area (if you go in the
summer months you'd need to go real early in the morning) as well as the goods
in the Tri-Cities area.

I like Robert's "Trail Work Decathlon" idea. That'll give even those of us
who can't track stand for more than 2 seconds or don't have cooking skills
a chance at winning a contest. Even Charlotte was interested in
participating in the "Rock Toss" event, although I doubt she'll be up for
the wheelbarrow race after yesterday's trail party. :-)

Several of us rode Tolt-Macdonald on Sunday. The weather was a balmy 60
degrees, and the sun was trying to peek through. All in all it was a
great morning to ride in the park. As usual, the center section of the
park was still wet and in need of drying out while the perimeter trails,
Toothpick, Blair, GoKart, 76, nessije, etc were in good shape. All in
all the trails should be dried out soon and ready for some summer work
parties. That's about all for this trail report. Let's pray for more
sun less rain and clean up the winter rust on the bikes.

There were a large number of rides in park and we ran into very few of
them. Those we did run into recognized the BBTC after we introduced
ourselves so the work is on the street about the club. Keep up the good
work on trail and club advocacy.

Regards,

Frank D. Girolami

Good ride report, Kevin.  Glad to see someone else take the lead writing it;
kinda busy day today. So here's my 10 cents for part two:

State Patrol. Finley Hills. Cowiche. Wow. Great places to ride, inDEED.
Highly recommend all three to anyone, especially the latter two, for folks who
like cool basalt formations & other geologic stuff.

Thought at State Patrol:
"Wow, glad I unclipped in time; that could've been nasty... amazing how fast
you can unclip your pedals when you HAVE TO unclip your pedals!!"

Seen at State Patrol (separate incident):
Telltale signs of a biker doing a nasty ender: distinctive barend-helmet-
barend print in the grass!

Felt at Finley Hills:
Surging adrenaline from barreling down rock-strewn trails, combined with the
exhilaration of sweeping views of Columbia River & cliffs.

Tasted at Finley Hills:
The excellent combination of beef jerky nuggets and dried apricot, promoted and
distributed generously by a fellow biker.

Heard at Charbonneau campground on the Snake River:
"I now know why they call a flock of crows a 'murder'. I was woken up by their
racket, wishing I had a *&#^@ shotgun by my side."
"Yeah maybe we should throw some breadcrumbs next to the other guys' tent, wake
those slackers up!!" :)

Smelled at Cowiche Canyon:
Sweet sagebrush and desert wildflowers.

Seen at Cowiche Canyon:
Dried salt on the helmet straps for the first time this year!

Glad you all could make it. Looking forward to more eastside biking.

Ethan

The trail is in great shape. Only came across 10-15 areas where a
dismount would be required. The trail floor is like Skookum extra
creamy peanut butter, so the going is kind of slow. Worthy of a trip
if your looking for a slow spinning technical highly scenic ride.

Recommend parking at Camp Sheppard trailhead. The cross Hwy 410 and
turn left. Take the trail head on your right (1/4 mile) and
switchback down to and cross the suspension bridge and then take a
right onto the trail. Ride all the way until you hit a road then
turn right and ride out to the highway. Turn right on Hwy 410 and
find your car (will require a 3-5 mile road ride at the end).

This route looked like the most enjoyable trek for the early season
conditions.

Hello All,

Short notice, but I just posted a work party out on the Iverson (fat
hand) trail at Tiger:

The Tiger Mountain season opening is just around the corner, so it's time
for a bit of "spring cleaning". We'll be working in guerilla format,
clearing blowdown and working on some drainage. We'll also be scouting
sites for future work parties and thinking about re-route options for the
new bridge.

If (like me) you're looking for the perfect excuse NOT to race the Battle
in Seattle this year, this is it!
