Some impressive work being done by our friends south of us. 66 people on a trail
work party, on a day that was quite wet. Major kudos to them!

they are extremely reputable as they own Bath Cycle & Ski in Bath,
Maine.......the name of their online business is www.bikeman.com   which has
been around for over 20 years....you see them advertise in dirt rag rather
often.

davis carver has been mountain biking for a very very long time.  he is
genuine, honest and a no b-s kind of guy.  i would trust buying a bike from
them as they are good people and stand behind their product.  they have been at
interbike for one or two years.....they even have a very affordable titanium
frame as well.

i wouldn't be too hesitant....i think davis really did his homework before he
got into the manufacturing end of the bike business.  his bike shop and website
are very reputable as well.

that's all i got for ya.....oh, i think in mountain bike action a year or two
ago they reviewed this bike.....that may be worth a google or a bing to check
out the article.

thanks,

eric

BBTC, uh - Evergreen Gang,

Anyone own or have ridden a Carver 96er? (www.carverbikes.com)

I've ridden the Trek 69er and dug it - now discontinued. The Carver seems like a
deal for a $400 frame. Everything I've read online about the Carver is positive.
I'd run it geared and light as possible according to current wallet width - they
are related. Thick wallet = light bike. Thin wallet = heavy bike. It's all part
of this new math the kids are doing.

I've been on a hardtail kick (ha - get it?) for the last year or so - and may
continue the pounding awhile longer. When it comes down to it, I'm old school XC
Geek and jump off nothing. Just give me rolling middle gear singletrack and a
few Clif bars and I'm happy.

If anyone out there in BBTC, uh - Evergreen Land, has any feedback on Carver, or
even better - a bummed quick test ride - I'd appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Dan O (from the ancient days of early BBTC history)

Rode and hiked Soaring Eagle over the weekend, in the rain and wind.
With over 12 miles of maintained trails in the one square mile park
there's plenty of room to wander and roam. Though I was there in the
rain I was pleasantly surprised by how little mud there was. I was
expecting a quagmire but only ran across isolated puddles.

With over 12 miles of trails available, this is a fun network of tight
and twisty trail. There are 18 named trails so many ride variations are
possible. On the trails themselves you will encounter roots, rocks,
logs, and mud. Some of the trails here can get extremely wet and muddy
in winter and spring.

All in all had a great time at Soaring Eagle, for a low country
excursion it was a good outing. And since it's so close to Seattle,
I didn't have to drive far to get there!

Pics as well as a detailed trail map, driving directions, and more can
be found HERE

Whatever Dave said and I took the NE XC trail gnome option Kevin offered working
from 1-4 solo focusing on the better section just above the wet slop. Next week
I'll see how my fixes on the upper are doing and roll up my smartwool sleeves
and go into the really challenging drainage section in the flatter area.

Also I think it was Steve who is a regular I gathered DID go for the slop zone
and drained the biggest lake.

Frankly I'm happy to do this solo and think its kinda a nice upgrade from my
internet plumber day*and*night job that buys my bikes.

Hope some of you think so too and see ya'll out there.

Len

p.s. yesterday and today brother Dave Hutton and frinds (included yt yesterday)
tuned up yet another nice line that I think will help me fill in my gap jumping
skillset deficit.

p.s.s: smartwool!

Another great day out there, rained most of the time. 4 of us worked on drainage
on Boot Camp. We could sure use some more help on the XC trails. It's really not
that bad working in the rain, a thermos of hot tea, an umbrella for breaks and a
wide brim hard hat make a huge difference. I also dug up yet another clump of
holly. Saw a few NW hardcore riders with lots of mud on them and their bikes.

They're looking for community input into the process. For example, let them
know you want passive use, which includes mountain biking.

Converting a friends older MTB and would like to get him a fork that actually
works. If anyone has a 1 1/8" X 8+" length steerer tube, 80 mm'ish travel
spring or air fork I'd be interested depending on price. Headset is a bonus.
Please reply off list.

Are you tired of referring to the Duthie XC trails as Bootcamp, NE, SW and NW
XC? Help us find some awesome trail names. Preferably a common theme for the 4,
but not necessary.

Here are a few ideas to get the creative juices going...

* Tragedies: "Armageddon, Slaughterhouse, Natural Disaster, and Catastrophe" ?
(Naaaah!)
* Trees: "Cedar, Fir, Hemlock and Maple"? (Booooring!)
* Heavenly theme: "Valhalla, Paradise, Utopia, Enlightenment, Olympus"? (Yuk.)
* Characters: "Cartman, Stan, Kyle and Kenny"? (OK, so that's my favorite show
of all time.)
* How about STDs? "Let's go hit the Syphilis Trail". Or "No more Gonorrhea...
too wet right now... let's go try the Herpes Loop"

OK, so now you see why I need help??!! Surf around to see what's out there to
get ideas. In fact, we'll make it worth your while! How about a contest...

Contest with fabulous prizes:

* Winner gets a pair of Native Eyewear sunglasses
(http://www.nativeyewear.com/eyewear/sunglasses/list) -- choose between Gonzo,
Sprint or Bomber models.
* Runner up gets some awesome NikWax water-proofing (http://www.nikwax.
com/en-us/ index.php) products.
* Email to mwestra@evergreenmt b.org -- put "XC Trail Name" in the subject (I'll
set up a rule to send 'em emails to a specific folder, so if you don't include
that in the subject, I may not get it).
* Deadline for submissions: Dec 7th.
* Winners selected by Jan 31st 2010... probably sooner than that.

Fine Print: Must pick up your prize from Evergreen office, Duthie or Colonnade.
No guarantee that the winning trail names won't be changed later. In fact, no
guarantee of anything really. Let's just have fun and see what we come up with.

After seeing the 4X MTB promo for the races out at the Peninsula A.B.A. BMX
arena...I thought what an Idea! I used to race BMX when I was a kid. Well, since
the 4X MTB races where only one Saturday a month there. And The BMX races are
every Fri. Sat. and Sunday...I decided to build a 24" BMX race bike!... INDOOR
JUMPS AND BERMS for a nominal $45.00 a year membership, and a $15.00 day of race
sign up fee... Oh ya, AND for 5 bucks on Tues. and Wed. nights you can just go
and ride (no race)...So when there is Ice on the ground and you just cant take
the cabin fever... Take your hard tail out for some indoor dirt action!

Thanks for the pics, Ralph. The water levels in the swamp are at record levels.
Definitely higher than anything I've seen in the last 2 years. Plus, I can no
longer see the high water level markers King County put in many moons ago. Don't
know if there's anything other than rain contributing to it... beaver dam maybe?
If anybody owns a pair of hip waders and wants to walk downstream and check out
the situation, it would be most appreciated.

Thanks for the help yesterday Ralph, Linda, Angela, JD, David (aka Crash) and
anyone I missed. I'm guessing the job is between 1/4 and 1/3 complete.

The highly technical process is:
1) sling muck
2) dump crushed.

Ok, we need some help completing this task, so a little more detail:
1) scrape muck into pile
2) scoop up and sling it as far away as possible
3) haul in and dump crushed rock
4) spread the crushed into a crown shape at least 3" deep in the middle
5) tamp it down.

If anybody is heading to Duthie to ride and wants to get started on that, throw
a shovel in your car and take a few minutes to sling some muck -- it'd be a big
help :)

Thanks,
Mike

Some of the mud on the north access trail/path from the parking area at
the lodge has been converted to gravel through a highly technical
process developed by Mike Westra. I have some pictures here
<http://www.bikes.ruresearch.com/> that show the new gravel and a few
that show how deep the water is along the boardwalk. Some place it is
about 16" deep.

Clear!

Thanks, Bob. Great explanation. Riding and hiking on a pine needle carpet (fir
or hemlock around here) through the woods is an awesome experience, but with
heavy traffic it will quickly degrade to slop. The effects of riding on organic
are so obvious at Duthie... especially on the more deciduous east side of the
park.

Of course, just clearing the organic off the trail isn't the only problem on the
NE and Bootcamp trails at Duthie... we need to go back over the trail and work
on drainage and proper outslope/backslope.

Segue...

So join a work party and help us get the eastside XC trails in shape. :) We've
had so much continuous rain that we may have to close a big chunk of the NE
trail until it has a chance to dry out. We need your help. We're going to try to
get WPs going on both Sat & Sun through the winter.

If you can come out during the week to help, shoot me an email
mwestra@... and let me know what days/time work.

Thanks,
Mike

Good info, thanks. For those of us new to the group, and know little about
anything beyond "riding" trails. The A B C's are important for you "vets" to
share with us newbies so we can spread the word to other newbies... And as far
as a 2 stroke blower goes... Blow, Blow like 3 drunk WSU chearleaders. (Sorry,
there's no children that read this blog is there?..lol)
