We are trying to establish some policies at our High School, for attendance. Currently we have left attendance problems with our coaching staffs, but now our administration wants to get involved and established some hard and fast rules. I was wondering if any of the coaches on line have any requirement policies that we might consider? How many unexcused absences, how many tardies? Can you miss class at all on game days, etc.
In school all day to play for practice or game day unless they have an approved excuse. I don't have a set policy on how many times a player can be late. However, late to practice means reduces playing time until I reach a point where they will never play and there is no point in keeping them on the team.

For our school district here in Florida, a student has
to be at school for at least half of the day to attend practice or play in a
game (that day).

At our school, if you are absent for a class during any part of the day (except doctor/dentist or other important reason) than you are not allowed to practice or play that night. If you are over 5 minutes tardy for a class, that is an automatic absence as well. Also, every 3rd tardy counts as an absence where the player is allowed to still practice or play that day but must serve a one hour suspension the next Saturday morning. Every 3rd tardy equals an hour basically. As a coach this rule helps teach the lesson that the player must pay for their mistakes while still being part of the team. If they choose not to practice that night, there is no Saturday required. If a player chooses that path it shows a lot about their character to both me as a coach and their teammates.

Our high school policy is pretty cut and dry.
Unexcused absences or tardies the day of an event
means no competition. We define exused absences as
doctors appointments and religous excuses. Illness
may be excused but athletes are not allowed to play
because of their illness. It is our policy for all
athletics and activities.

When I was in high school, my school had a 7-period class schedule. The school rule was that you had too be in school for a minium of 4 periods. It could be the first 4 periods, the last 4, or two then you leave and come back for 2 more. As long you had attended 4 classes on that day you were eligible to participate in practice and games.

One of the issues in our school is that with class
sizes getting so big sometimes teachers make mistakes
in reporting daily attendance. Or sometimes they do
not take attendance for a day at all. This makes the
rules as such ineffective or up for debate--"I was
there, he marked me absent" or "I came in 1 minute
late but was marked absent for the entire period when
it should have been a tardy."
Very hard to decipher. I'll be interested in other
responses about this.

Phil, I'm not going to give you a bunch of policies. But, I will say this: make sure the ones for athletics are in line for all other extra-curricular activities for the school. If a student has to be in every class to play in a game, another student should have the same policy in order to perform in the school play (or whatever other activity).

Policies are great, but I like Larry Browns old adage of, "
...having a few rules...but a helluva lotta suggesstions."
I feel pretty strongly that whatever policies are put into place
that they should be consistent with those in place for other
co-curricular activities such as band, cheerleading, debate, drama,
etc.
Remember that kids might miss class for doctors, dentists, or
physical therapy appointments, field trips, funerals, or visiting
Aunt Dottie in the hospital. Where do you draw the line?
