Tom,

"Twould have been a fine response even if you hadn't mentioned my minor contribution! The award recognized your excellent, painstaking and creative work.

You won't realize how much of an honor the award is for me by anything I'll say in this reply -- thanks, Stew, Art and Bob -- but please know that I know there's no chance it happens without the Halsey Hall chapter.

I received information and resources -- my footprints can no doubt still be found on Bob's shoulders -- from several of you. I received encouragement -- may sound trite but from where I started it was no small thing -- from many more. And I had wisdom from people like Stew, Dan and Bob in my head as I researched and wrote. That sort of help can't be quantified.

So, at least in my view, the fact that two of three finalists came from the Halsey Hall chapter is no coincidence. And if you've read Dan's work I'm sure you'll agree that the committee must have had a tough decision.

Ed Barrow: The Bulldog Who Built the Yankees' First Dynasty, by Dan Leviit, was one of three finalists (along with Chief Bender's Burden and a biography of Hammerin' Hank Chadwick) for the award.
