I just finished reading the Politics of Glory, our next book club
selection. Without yet getting into the content, I was surprised at
how many errors there were in basic editing:

Page 6 ends with a repeat of eigh lines from erlier in the page.
Page 42, first full paragraph - "Lieb was such a marvellous
writer . . . "
Pages 48-49 (and later), Gehringer is identified as Charley and
Charlie
Page 77 - factual error rather than editing, says in 1903 Chesbro
threw a wild pitch on the last day of the season that cost his team
the pennant (it was 1904)
Page 118, Allie Reynold (should be Reynolds)
Page 158, "A library is fundametal . . . " (Some helpful reader put
in the editing mark to had the 'n' to fundamental)
Page 168, Arky Vaughn (should be Vaughan)
Page 186, Dangling modifier at the end of the first paragraph
Page 207, "Accoring to . . . " (Same helpful reader put in the
editing mark to ad the 'd')

This isn't Bernsteinesque, but then this isn't a Bernstein book. It
was published by Macmillan, and I'd expect them to have sharper
editors who would catch this stuff.

As for the content, has anyone else finished the book and/or would
you like to have an on-line discussion about the book on this forum?

Stew

Interesting observations, Stew. The discussion of peak value vs. career value raises the Kirby Puckett issue, which I had recently been thinking about anyway....

I would not have voted for Puckett, but I think he was clearly more deserving than Hrbek. While they arrived there in different ways, they were nearly...

I think that the way Puckett's career ended might have influenced the voters, too.--art ... From: "stewthornley" <stew@...> To:...
