Subject: Fred Clarke hit .406 in 1897?
wknight94
Send Email Send Email

I think this has been brought up in the past but I can't find it for
the life of me. The Hall of Fame website, Baseballlibrary.com and a
few other places say that HOF'er Fred Clarke hit .406 in 1897.
Baseball-reference.com, MLB.com and many other places disagree,
putting Clarke's 1897 average closer to .390. Does anyone know the
story behind this discrepancy? Didn't someone write an article
somewhere on this topic? The difference was significant since it's
the only season that Clarke allegedly hit .400+

Thanks! :)

Hi Bill - Clarke's numbers, and more notably Cap Anson's, were adjusted by
the editors of the McMillan Baseball Encyclopedia based on some really
sloppy practices after David Neft was no longer in charge. This mess is
described in Alan Schwarz's The Numbers Game on p158-161. I'll work on
getting the good folk at BaseballLibrary.com to update their bio.

I have released the source code to one of my Markov

Anyone who wants to understand run expectancy, linear

useful, if not mandatory.

Hopefully, others will share some of their black boxes

Hello,

I have uploaded the 2006 stats.  Consider this a first pass.  I think they are correct and they have been vetted on baseball-reference for a few weeks now, but there are no guarantees.

Also, there have been hundreds of corrections largely from the SABR bio and records committee and some from random users.

I will put out another release following the announcement of the remaining records at some point in December.

I hope to spend a week on this project during the off-season, so maybe we'll be able to get it kickstarted.

Kevin, did the last field in each row import properly when you directly imported the CSV files into Access?  (If so, what version of Access are your running?)  In the past, I've had a problem where the last field in several tables did not get imported when I tried to directly import the CSV files.  I had to first bring the CSV files into Excel and then import into Access from the Excel spreadsheets I made for each table.  (I'm running Access 2000.)

It does look like GIDP, the very last field of the batting and battingpost tables, and also the last field in the pitchingpost table, did not populate.  However, all of the last fields in the other tables seem to be fine. So, not sure if it's something with GIDP, but guess I'll be trying the import into Excel first method....

THANKS,

I just realized that I didn't provide any links here.  Sorry about that.

The databases are located at

http://www.baseball-databank.org/

There is a mysql version and a csv version.  These are complete historical databases with all data from 1871-2006.

Here is the list of tables and their defs and the row counts.
http://www.baseball-databank.org/files/BDB-def-2006-11-17.txt
http://www.baseball-databank.org/files/tables.txt

Please note that the fielding table probably won't fit into excel at over 120,000 rows.

I've been able to import the larger tables such as the fielding or batting tables with more than 65536 rows into Excel by using the code at this site:

Basically this code creates as many worksheets as needed to import all the data and then I'm able to work with it as needed inside of Excel to import it over to Access.

There's a problem with the 2004 postseason pitching data in the latest

Ed Sprague is a "return to team" case in 2000. He started the season
with the Padres and was traded to the Red Sox on 6/30. He was then
released by the Red Sox on 8/23 and signed with the Padres on 8/31.
According to Retrosheet, he played 53 games in his first stint with
the Padres, and 20 in his second stint (plus 33 games with the Red
Sox). However, the database does not have separate data for his two
stints with the Padres. These are his 2000 entries in the Batting table:

No, the Red Sox traded Mirabelli to the Padres in the off-season
(12/7/2005) for Mark Loretta, so he only had one stint with the Red
Sox in 2006.

I believe James Baldwin had two separate stints with the Orioles in

Novice questions here I should know the answer to. What is the
difference between the BDB stats and those from Baseball Archive? Are
they from the same source? Just curious.

I'm just a user, but I'm fairly certain that they are the same exact databases.

You need to learn the Baseball Almanac policy. Ask editor Sean Holtz.
He sometimes revises biographical data. Playing data, I don't know.

Baseball ALMANAC is a whole 'nother issue.

Baseball ARCHIVE (www.baseball1.com) is I believe still run by Sean Lahman (too many Seans?).

There MAY be some different 'auxillary' tables, but in the past the main batting, pitching, etc. tables where the same at Baseball Archive as on Baseball Databank.

As of right now, Baseball Archive still has the "2005" version of the database.

THANKS,
Kevin Johnson

It's possible I messed something up during my import of the CSV files into my Access database, but I believe there are two records in the Salary table in which the corresponding playerID does not exist in the Master table.  I've listed the two records from the Salary table below:

yearID     teamID     lgID     playerID     salary
2006       FLO        NL       megremi01    327000
2006       TBA        AL       morish01     500000

I searched the Master table for the "megremi01" and "morish01" playerID's and could not find them.

So my question is, are there two records missing from the Master table, or are these two records in the Salary table not supposed to be there?

morish01 is probably Shinji Mori of Tampa Bay.  He was likely signed for $500,000 out of Japan, but did not appear in the majors this year.

So, I'm guessing these 2 records in the salary table are not supposed to be there.

THANKS,
Kevin

These are minor leaguers who were given major league contracts or were reported as having salaries.  They can be deleted from the table or ignored.  Sometimes these are guys who sign major league contracts, but play in the minors the whole year.
