PlayerID smithch07 is I think supposed to be CHUCK Smith, who played for the Marlins, not CHRIS Smith?  Or maybe I'm confused!

Subject: [baseball-databank] Obscure error in the CSV exports for 11/21/2008 release?

This also exists in the MySQL version. Maybe I'm misreading things, but... there's a player with playerID smithch07 in the Master table, Chris Smith. The Master table lists his playerID as smithch07 and his bbrefID as smithch08. But then, in the Appearances table, his record is tied with the playerID of smithch08 when it should be smithch07. This record in the Appearances table is for the 2008 Red Sox, for whom Smith did play.

Am I wrong here? Thanks for any clarification.

MLB.com codes *are* MLBAM codes. Sometimes you hear "Elias player ID",
but those are different.

Cool. Who can we petition to get this included as a column in the Lahman DB?

Lahman, I'm assuming?

For the active players through 2008, it's here:
http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/comments/mlb_milb_8833/

I'll be doing it for the 2009 players as well.

If someone wants to spend the time for the older players, I can probably
help. I have done it for all of them, but there's many differences, and I
didn't go back to cross-check the differences.

This is definitely moving off-topic for this group.

What I'm going to suggest is that you put together a summary of the
information that you would LIKE to have in order to come up with a
"better model", post it on the Retrosheet list, and then those of us
on that list (which does include many people on this list but which
has little to do with the purpose of this list) who have long
experience with using the event files can help you figure out whether
and to what extent you can get that information out of the PBP data.
Specific fielding (and fielder) information tends to be fairly
complete back to 1989, but much less so prior to that - sometimes all
you know is that a batter hit a single or made an out, but you don't
always know who fielded the ball or made the play, let alone what type
of ball it was.

It's hard to suggest a method without knowing what you're trying to
learn. What kinds of questions do you want to try to answer using PBP

(And yes, this is probably better fodder for the Retrosheet discussion

Hello,

I am getting familiar with the Retrosheet play by play data which is ready to be
imported into a relational database.

I was wondering what methodology or quantitative approach you would use to
analyze this kind of data?

Any discussion or input you would care to offer would be greatly appreciated.

As a matter of good conscience, one should not spider a site on a daily or
weekly basis. I would think being able to spider a site once a year
should be acceptable for some (few? many?) website owners, as long as the
data is for personal use.

As for cost, a GB of bandwidth probably costs a dime. If a data-heavy
page has 250K, and if there's say 100K number of pages, then the total
amount of download would be 25 GB, or it costs Sean $2.50 each time
someone downloads his whole site. If on the other hand you are
downloading just current-season data, then it would be less than a GB, or
say about a nickel or a dime each time. PI costs 29$, or 8 cents a day.
So, that's a more than fair deal. Not to mention you get PI for "free".

It's a tough situation for Sean. He compiles the end-of-year data for us
to distribute, so that's a benefit. Not only that, but his joint venture
with Palmer for the Emerald guide is also a big benefit. I'm sure he'd
like to make it easier for us on a daily basis, but he's got to respect
his own licencing agreement with his data provider.

Not to mention that once or twice, I've asked him (or Justin) to custom
compile something for me, and they did it as a courtesy. Sean is not "The
Man" that we can feel good about taking advantage of. I'm sure Wells did
it innocently enough.

As for the legal matter of "Terms of Service", I would presume that would
be tough to enforce. The TOS have to be accepted by the user, not
imposed. For example, he can truthfully claim to have never read the TOS,
and so, how can he be prosecuted for not adhering to them? Of course, the
web would come to a standstill if we had to ask the user to accept the TOS
each time he enters a site.

All to say: be nice to Sean.

Tom

I believe it's winning percentage...but usually that only happens when there is an uneven number of games(or in head to head fantasy where they count ties, I actually finished second this year with 2 more wins). You can be 1/2 game behind with 1 less win or 1 more loss.  Then they will play a make up game:if you win, you're tied, if not you're out. That's why they always say a game will be made up "only if necessary".

I believe the standings are given by winning percentage.  I do recall early in the season sometimes where the first place team is 1/2 GB.

What is the actual algorithm for determining how many games behind a team is on a given date? I mean, I can do it in my head, but I'd like to be able to do it programatically.

I found a thread on Google Answers with some details (http://answers. google.com/ answers/threadvi ew?id=234414). It describes the formula as:
(1/2) * ((WA - WB) + (LB - LA))

That looks to be spot on to me, especially considering the way MLB.com describes "Games Behind": 'GB - Games behind, the average of the differences between the leading team wins and the trailing team wins, and the leading team losses and trailing team losses'

Can someone confirm this is right? Is this how Baseball Reference does it? And, if so, what's the answer to the question at the end of the Google Answers thread: if Team A is 2-0 and Team B is 5-1, who is in first place? do we go by Games Behind or Winning PCT?

Thanks for the help.

I haven't tried it, but Baseball On a Stick probably might satisfy you.

Retrosheet doesn't have the current year stats. There's probably some stuff floating around- I've written a python script to scrape the stuff from baseball-reference.com into a mysql DB, and Adler's book Baseball Hacks has some tips as well.

I posted the service time data on my site last year, mapped to some ID
(MLBAM? BDB?). I think it was for the 2008 season.

Maury,

Salary information is included in the BDB. There really isn't a centralized
repository for service time - I have a set of data gotten from the guy who runs
Cot's Baseball Contracts that I've worked on mapping to the Baseball Databank
player IDs. (And it's more like two years of data, maybe three - can't recall
exactly.) Unfortunately I don't have access to that right now (the computer it's
on is in a state of disassembly.) I'll try to get something for you over the
weekend.

Are you talking about historical data?

Baseball Almanac has a database for purchase:

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/minor-league/

I have a spreadsheet on my computer titled "minordetails", but I can't remember where I got it from. It has minor league stats from 1950-2006, although it is not a complete database. I googled "minor details" and found Most Valuable Network, but couldn't find it there. If anyone knows the link, you might find that useful. It was free when I downloaded it.

When this question came up before, Chuck Kuhn told us that one can buy all the minor league stats at http://www.baseball-almanac.com/minor-league
