I expect to have a release available by this weekend,
and it will remain in the same database structure as
last year. The folks who create or use third-party
applications should be able to use the new version
without any difficulties.
I do want to say that I agree with Derek Adair's
comments about the likelihood of their being changes
to the design in the near future. We need to balance
two needs: 1) to limit the disruption to folks who use
third-party apps and 2) the larger goal of making the
database more useful and more efficient.
In terms of frequency of design change, I'd like to
seem them occur once every 3 or 4 years, not 3 or 4
times a year. That requires a thoughtful and
deliberate approach to managing the design, and avoids
a series of incremental changes that may provide
minimal value.
A discussion about proposed design changes and the
methods for implementing them is currently taking
place, and my preference is to resolve those issues
before implementing any changes in a public release.
Regards,
Sean Lahman
