Pondering which BB database to use for example in book   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #2848 of 3888 |
I've begun to work on MySQL Cookbook, second edition. In the first
edition, Sean was kind enough to allow the use of the baseball1.com
database, which at that time was version 4.5 and had data up through
2001.

For the second edition, I would like to use more current data.
I'm trying to determine what my options might be.

1) It appears that the current version of baseball1.com is 5.2 and
includes data up through 2004. If Sean is still willing, I could
use that.

2) From my occasional reading of this mailing list, it appears that
there is work going on at baseball-databank.org to reorganize the
database (for example, to use numeric ID values rather than "LahmanIDs")
and bring it up to date. My sense of things is that the
reorg is still in flux (is that correct?) and that bringing the
database up to date is still in progress (is that correct?). And
obviously I need to be concerned about whether the licensing would
allow use of the data for publication purposes -- has the new license
been decided on yet?

I don't need to make any decisions for a couple of months yet, but
if anyone could shed any light on my questions, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.

My guess is that whatever Sean Lahman will publish will be the most stable. Tom ... __________________________________ Start your day with Yahoo! - Make it...

Yes, i would say that it is in flux and still up in the air. I don't speak for Sean Lahman, so I can't say whether you can use that db for the new edition....
