This weekend will be the biggest in the history of the two racing
venues making up the Barona Speedway and Barona Drag Strip complex.
Not only will the SCRA sprint cars be making their long-awaited debut
on the quarter-mile clay oval at Barona Speedway, the adjacent one-
eighth-mile drag strip will be hosting events Saturday and Sunday
afternoons.
The Barona racing complex is located southwest of Ramona – 4.8 miles
north of the Barona Casino on Wildcat Canyon Road.
The weekend begins tomorrow with a free-to-the-public open house for
the SCRA sprint cars. Gates open at 2 p.m. with the exhibition runs
starting at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday opens with the second of seven rounds of the Summit Series
drags and ends with the first official appearance of the SCRA sprint
cars on the oval.
The classes in the NHRA-sanctioned Summit Series are Pro, Sportsman,
Street, Motorcycle and High School. The gates to the drag strip open
at 7 a.m. with the racing scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
At that time, the action shifts back to the oval for the long-awaited
debut of the full-sized, non-wing SCRA sprint cars plus the
California Lightning Sprints. Admission is $15 for adults and $12 for
children 7-12. Children 6 and younger enter free when accompanied by
an adult.
As a result of the USAC-SCRA sprint car war, Barona Speedway has
become the unofficial home track of the regional SCRA series and will
host eight events this season.
