Barona Speedway is reaping rewards from the closing of Cajon Speedway
that go beyond simply having stock cars fill out its expanded or new
classes.
"Some key workers from Cajon have come up here and really helped us,"
said Barona Speedway manager Todd Salazar. "Each week, we get a
little bit better and better. We're still looking to make
improvements."
While the jump in attendance has not been quite as great as Salazar
had hoped, his oval is regularly drawing more than 100 cars for a
Saturday night program with a high of 150.
"The factory and street stock classes have taken off thanks to the
drivers and cars who decided to come here from Cajon," said
Salazar. "The pony stocks and IMCA modifieds are growing slower.
"But most of the feedback we've received is positive. We're just
trying to make it better one step at a time. Stock cars are mostly
new to us and racing on the dirt is new to most of the drivers who
joined us from Cajon."
