UNION-TRIBUNE BILL CENTER
For the second straight year, Barona Speedway operator Todd Salazar
has high hopes for the quarter-mile dirt oval going into Saturday
night's season opener.
But his chances for success are much higher than a year ago when he
opened his track to the full-sized sprint cars of the troubled SCRA
tour.
The sprint cars quickly disappeared.
"It could have worked for us," Salazar said this week. "We did
everything we could. The drivers liked running here. It was a great
opportunity, but the timing was bad."
Salazar's timing this year appears to be perfect.
Barona Speedway has opened its doors to displaced stock cars from the
closed Cajon Speedway. And on opening night, pony, bomber and street
stocks left homeless by Cajon's demise will be at the facility off
Wildcat Canyon Road some 4112 miles north of the Barona Casino.
Barona will also be running its regular fare of California Lightning
Sprints, 600cc midgets and Dwarf cars.
"This is all positive," said Salazar. "When we held a practice two
weeks ago, 35 cars showed up. Everyone is psyched. It's anyone's
guess how many cars we'll get. I hope to add everyone I can from
Cajon Speedway, though. We'll form a factory stock class later."
Salazar knows a number of fans as well as drivers will be visiting
Barona Speedway for the first time Saturday night.
"We like to consider ourselves fan friendly," said Salazar. "Bring
your coolers and barbecues."
In addition to a 2,500-seat grandstand, Barona Speedway has motorhome
spots and some hillside seating. Practice and qualifying starts at 4
p.m. with the racing at 6:45.
