SCRA RACES AT BARONA CANCELLED
JULY 31ST TULARE RACE POSTPONED
by Robert Mayson
LAKEWOOD, CA, JULY 10, 2004 - Sprint Car Racing Association President
Ron
Shuman confirmed earlier this week that the remaining four SCRA races
scheduled
for Barona Speedway Park (Ramona, CA) have been cancelled.
"I want to thank the Salazar Family for all of their hard work and
support,"
Shuman said. "Unfortunately, the bottom line is that Barona Speedway
hasn't
had an opportunity to build a weekly fan base that is strong enough
to support
our group at this time. After all, it had been 22 years since there
was
non-wing spring car racing in the San Diego area. Hopefully, we can
figure out a
way to make this a mutually beneficial situation for everyone and we
can bring
the SCRA back to Barona because our races there have really been
exciting."
The original plan for Barona Speedway was to have two or three dates
on the
2004 schedule, with a probable car count of around 40 cars. With a
healthy car
count, and a well-established traveling fan base, Barona would have
been able
to introduce their weekly fans to sprint car racing, while having
enough time
to attracting new fans. Unfortunately, the West Coast split that took
place
in mid-December forced the SCRA and Barona Speedway to schedule more
races
than perhaps they should have.
"We took a shot at making this work," Shuman said. "We had tracks
that had
already verbally committed to specific dates with us back out late
last year,
so Todd Salazar wanted to step up and show his support for the SCRA.
I just
feel so bad for everyone that has worked so hard to make this thing a
success.
I'm very disappointed for the track personnel, the car owners, the
drivers,
the officials and most of all the fans that supported us. This is
just another
example of how this split has been bad for sprint car racing. If we
would
have had our usual car count, we could have easily made this thing
work. Now,
sprint car racing is the San Diego area is gone again. Hopefully, we
can all
regroup, and with the support of our teams, sponsors and fans, we can
figure out
a way to return to Barona."
The remaining Barona Speedway Park dates on the SCRA schedule were
July 24th,
September 18th, October 16th and November 13th. Shuman said he is
currently
trying to fill those dates with other venues.
In other news, Shuman and Thunderbowl Raceway (Tulare, CA) promoter
Steve
Faria announced today that the July 31st event has been postponed to
allow teams
more time to prepare for the 6th Annual Non-Wing World Championship
(NWWC)
tour. The first event on the tour is a two-day show on August 6th and
7th at
Hollywood Hills Speedway in San Felipe, New Mexico.
