Re: [barefoothorses] Re: Quarter crack, please advise

"Can you post pics?"

I will try to get some pictures today.

Very Important Question: Is there new uncracked growth across the top
of this crack?

The  crack  hasn't advanced any farther up the hoof and  the trim I did yesterday took care of the worst of it.  The filly's feet grow pretty fast and I'm pleased with how things look now.

"The horse lands heel to toe just like you. He's even got an arch to
his foot. There is tremendous torque at the toe when the hoof breaks
over it to leave the ground. Are you trimming yourself?... .fantastic! !
Do you need shoes?....no, the magic bevel! She's always barefoot, she
isn't tender?....definite ly don't need the shoes. "

I do trim myself and still have a lot to learn, but the horses all have better feet now than when I started so something is working:)

Yes, the filly is always barefoot. She has pretty nice feet and can travel across gravel and rocks without much trouble.

" How's your bevel? Your bevel is your ace in the hole for taking the
torque off that crack and everything else, while you wait for it to
grow down and be gone. "

I put a really strong roll on the toe this last trim to relieve any pressure. The crack isn't growing so I feel confident it can be contained and grown out.

The hole in the white line is still quite deep and could very well have a bacterial infection. I have been picking out the hole and flushing it with an anti bacterial solution that's intended for cleaning wounds. I than fill the hole with a triple antibiotic cream.

I think soaking will be far more effective though. I have a soaking boot and plan to use peroxided cut with water to treat the infection. Hopefully this will be strong enough to kill the bugs but not harm the live tissue.

Thanks for your help:)

Tibbi

Shoes will not necessarily make this problem better. For cracks of any kind I usually bevel more so that the forces on the hoof wall are directed inward to...
