On old friend of mine had a mare that had a chronic hoof crack that no
amount of trimming and correction seemed to be able to fix.

She finally started treating it as though it was a fungal infection
and would squirt the hoof every once in a while with any sort of anti
fungal application she had on hand..betadine solution comes to mind.

It solved the crack problem and it's never come back.

It's really not too much trouble to put on a boot with the lysol/water solution and leave it on while you do other things. It's cheap and not that much labor...
