Hi Rachel:
EEEEK please eliminate the feed that has Corn, molasses and what not. If you are going to feed anything to get supplements in to her, I’d feed a rice bran/ground flax seed mix and I’d add Chasteberry, Vit E/Selenium and some other minerals.
It’s good you are doing the muzzle, and eliminating the apple trees, but you have to get the diet under tighter control.
I use Lisa Ross Williams for nutritional consults so you might want to check her out www.naturalhorsetalk.com, she charges a small fee for a consult and I and my clients are extremely happy with the results.
May I ask who is your trimmer and what is their training/trimming background.
Have you looked at the following websites?
www.ironfreehoof.com
www.hoofrehab.com
Both are excellent sites to explain healthy feet, ironfree is much easier to understand, hoofrehab is full of EXCELLENT info but it’s better to have a base knowledge of the feet :)
Even with such unhealthy issues as your mare has I wouldn’t expect continuous abscessing. But I guess you didn’t define what that is either. How many abscesses and in which feet have you had them?
Some trims are too invasive and can cause unnecessary abscessing, that’s why I’m asking. Not saying that is what is happening in your case just mentioning it.
Do you have pictures of your mares feet that you can share with us?
Regards,
Kim Cassidy
