And I'm now going to have to say back to you, boy are you being
defensive. You seem, to me, to be mistaking disagreeing with you as
attacking you. I didn't see any post, including mine, that came on
and said mean or verbally abusive things. They disagreed what you
said and stated what they thought. And I agree with them. The track
has been the way it has for 60 some years and has worked well. The
key has alwsys been in learning to skate properly on it.
Hey, you never know, your way may be better, but as i said, I'm
skeptical and until i try it out myself to see I won't agree with
you. I doesn't mean I'm attacking you, just that I disagree with you.

And this is why I never post on this board because I
just got attacked on all sides. Why is that? Boy you
guys sure are defensive.
The question was posed as to why the rails were
shaped the way they were and I answered it. I know
it's not "phony" cause I personally built that track.
Was there everyday working on it.
And yes we are trained to kick off the rail, but
what's the problem with making improvements to the
technical design of the track? We took a look at what
we had been skating on, an old T-bird track, and made
it better.
My first post was a simple answer that was not meant
to offend. But boy that wasn't what I got back. Do
you all sit around just wanting someone to pick on?
It sure seems that way.
Lighten up guys.

Thank you, Lou! You posted what I was thinking. I'm not saying that
some things can't be improved, but the track worked for almost 70
years and now it's design doesn't work anymore?
The key to proper Roller Derby skating is in training and LOTS of it.
It not only builds knowledge, it builds endurance.

SEA, SKATERS WHO ALL THEY DO IS FIGHT AND LESS SKATING TO SELL THE
PUBLIC THERE NO BETTER THEN THE WRESTLERS WHO NOW OWN THE SPORTS
WORLD OF EXCITEMENT WHERE THESE FANS WERE DERBY FANS
ALL I HEAR OUT HERE IS WHO WHAT AND WHERE, WELL SKATERS OF THE PAST
HAVE SOME OF THESE OLD VIDEOS MADE OFF OF FILM FOR SOME REASON HEY
GOT OFF THE SHELF AND OTHERS GOT THERE HANDS ON THEM SO NOW THERE AN
OPEN MARKET AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED GLAD TO EVEN KNOW THAT THERE ARE
SOME WHO STILL WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEM JUST TO GO BACK DOWN MEMORY
LANE, BUT WHO AGAIN IS MAKING MONEY OFF OF THEM, NOT SOME OF THE
SKATERS WHO WERE IN THESE FILMS
IM SURE SOME OUT HERE HAVE HELP SKATERS IN NEED BUT AGAIN THERE ARE
OTHERS HO ALSO FEED THERE OWN POCKETS TO HELP THEMSELVES SO BE VERY
CAREFUL HEN YOU SAY THERE ARE RULES TO SELLING TAPES, IF I WANTED TO
I COULD PUT MY HOUSE UP ON EBAY AND SELL MY COLLECTIONS, BUT TO ME
THERE MY PERSONAL PICTURES FILMS AND WILL NEVER BE SOLD AND THEY HAVE
BEEN COPIED OVER A THOUSAND TIMES BY OTHERS WHO SOLD THEM. IF SKATERS
GAVE FRIENDS OR FANS SOME OF THERE COLLECTIONS THEY WERE GIVEN OUT OF
LOVE NOT TO BE MARKETED AS A WAY OF SOMEONE MAKING A LIVING OFF OF
SKATERS OF THE PAST.
BUT AGAIN IM GLAD THERE ISA MARKET TO SEE THE PAST AS ITS A WAY AF

ENJOY THERE EFFORT IN TRYING TO DO SOMETHING THEY ALSO FELL IN LOVE
WITH.REMEMBER THERE JUST LEARNING,FLAT TRACK AND SOME WHO HAVE BANK

AND IS EXCITING.
MY OPINION AS ALWAYS MY BIG MOUTH, AT ONE TIME THE ROLLER DERBY SKATE

IN A PLACE THERE ARE STILL SOME AROUND, WHEN SKATING WAS ON TV THESE
WERE USED OVER AND OVER TO TAPE TV GAMES, AND SENT TO THEN TOWNS THE

we have been skating roller derby 50 years and now you tell me we need to change our track design and rail design for your safety decision. I feel the way your track is design can cause more injuries. #1 Learn to skate #2 Learn to fall without hurting yourself #3 Stay away from rails #4 the most inportance in skating learn to skate ROLLER DERBY
Well, I would have to skate the track with the rails the way you
have them to believe they are better that way, otherwise it makes no
sense to me to make them that way. Not saying it doesn't I'd just
have to check it out in person.
Yes, skaters got injured hitting the rail sometimes, but they also
got injured on all different parts of the track. The thing was, we
learned how to hit the rail properly to minimize chances of getting
hurt. I know nothing of how the Dolls are trained, but maybe they
just haven't taught them that particular skill.

Well, that wasn't very short...but it was sweet...
But I will believe it when I actually have the tapes
or DVDs in my grubby little paws.
If it is true, that's great, but I still see no
hardcore evidence of such. I tend not to believe
anything until I see it from multiple sources or a
source I have actual personal experience with (sorry,
I've been in the newspaper business too long!!)

Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around

Ok I'm going to keep this short and sweet to the
naysayers of this revelation.

Jerry Seltzer has no idea what happened to his games
and how would he know since he's been out of it for 33
years. I even asked him personally and didn't know and
referred that question to Don Drewry. All collectors,
skaters and die hard fans I've talked to also didn't
know

CCG purchased a huge sports tape library that included
the IRDL tapes and this was not the reason for their
acquisition, it just happened these tapes were part of
it along with college and pro games.

The actual press release mentioning specfically Roller
Derby games and Joan Weston, Charlie O, Tony Roman,
etc, is from 1999 acquisition by Cavalcade of Sports
Media. I will post that for everyone to see.

And last, I researched this all year and this is not a
phony item. Everything I posted I stand by. You have
to realize both companies know nothing about the
history of Roller Derby or RD as we know it. The 1999
press release should squash any doubts.

If anyone has any doubts they can contact me
personally and I will give you my contacts at both
companies and you can confirm it with them. Stay tuned

I think we are all hoping that there are
roller derby tapes and that may blind us to logic and reason. If there is
little to lose to hope, maybe we should continue to lightly press the right
people to making these tapes available for dire-hards like us.

Roller Derby tape ownership
This sounds totally phony to me for a number of
reasons:
1. In the press release found at the link toward the bottom of this
message, no mention is made of Roller Derby games.
2. Former Roller Derby
owner Jerry Seltzer has long acknowledged none
of these tapes were saved. You would think, he of all people, would know.
3. "Both CCG and BIT ask they NOT be contacted with questions so
please respect their requests. "
Yeah, duh, I wonder why. They would deny any knowledge of having
Roller Derby
tapes. In fact, I'm going to go contact them right now.
4. "I can tell you one conversation I had with the CCG CEO
and he had a raw list of the games he owns and there
was over a hundred entries on it. There was no dates
on it just names of the IRDL teams. He says "whats
this Bombers and Pioneers?"."
Oh come on, give me a break!!! If this company bought these tapes,
they are going to know what's on them. Would you buy something blindly
without knowing what you are buying?
There is absolutely no hardcore evidence in these messages that any of
this is true.

The change in the way that the uprights stand was a
saftey decision. With the old posts standing straight
up between the kickrail and handrail the possiblity of
broken arms, calivcals, ribs, etc. was a very real
threat. I'm sure some of you saw some pretty nasty
injuries brought on by a skater slamming into the
uprights at high speeds.
In order to try and prevent that our track designer
played with the uprights and found a way to bend them
out and away from the track. The trick was making them
do that and remain strong enough to hold the weight of
a skater hitting the rail.

About the only difference it made was having to get used to changing
your stride, making it longer or shorter, or taking more steps to get
around the track. There was as you said, for some skaters, a matter
of endurance also.
As for the part about the rails going inward more, I've never heard
of that on any track before. Maybe it just looked that way because of
the way it was filmed, or maybe they put the rails up wrong. It
doesn't make sense to have them more inward. When you skate the track
you use the whole track. If the rail is leaning inward it would keep
you from going all the way up the high part, I would think.

Actually what it is is tracks were sized differently to fit in the
auditoriums. I skated and trained at the Olympic at the time you
mention and it was fairly small because the Olympic Auditorium is a
small space. In a larger arena you could add more straightaway pieces
to make it longer. Like with the Pomona league in 1996. The first
game was at the Orange Show Fairgrounds and the track was much longer
then when they skated the game with the same track at the Olympic.

It's pretty simple now. CCG owns all rights for
distribution and selling 73 IRDL and some 50's games.
The CEO was not happy his property is being sold on
Ebay right now.

I can tell you one conversation I had with the CCG CEO
and he had a raw list of the games he owns and there
was over a hundred entries on it. There was no dates
on it just names of the IRDL teams. He says "whats
this Bombers and Pioneers?". I had to educate him on
what he was reading. I wish I could answer your
question but we'll have to wait a few more months for
that answer.

There certainly have been some heated arguments and speculation over what happened to the 1973 IRDL tapes. Collectors and ex skaters have told me they are either destroyed, lost or simply public domain. Not true folks. They reside in a climate controlled vault in Southern California. Let me clear up once for all who owns them and what RD fans may see in the future.

What happened to the games after the Derby folded I dont know other than ABR entertainment showing IRDL games on cable TV which resulted in alot of the games in circulation today. Let's fast forward to 1999. That year Cavalcade of Sports Media made a large sports film purchase which included the IRDL games and 1950's games. The press release was on the internet I was surprised nobody saw it.
In Dec 2005 Cavalcade sold their collection to Collectible Concepts Group which is a sports licensing company with MLB,NBA and NFL agreements (see press release link below). CCG has partnered this year with Back in Time TV to market and distribute many of the vintage games in this library. Because of this enormous job of going through thousands of hours of film/tape and their impending move, BIT hasn't gotten to the IRDL games yet. This is why I waited to post because I wanted to provide a link to the complete list including dates and teams skating.

I've talked with BIT this year and I'm told there could be plans to sell the games or broadcast them on a vintage sports channel. What's exciting are games or halves of games that haven't been seen since 1973 and let's not forget the 50's games in there too. Once that list is available, hopefully by early 07, I will post for everyone to see. Both CCG and BIT ask they NOT be contacted with questions so please respect their requests. So, as we all knew then and now, the claimants to ownership were frauds and any sales on the net are obviously illegal. We
ll, hope that makes IRDL fan's weekend.

There certainly have been some heated arguments and speculation over
what happened to the 1973 IRDL tapes. Collectors and ex skaters have
told me they are either destroyed, lost or simply public domain. Not
true folks. They reside in a climate controlled vault in Southern
California. Let me clear up once for all who owns them and what RD
fans may see in the future.

What happened to the games after the Derby folded I dont know other
than ABR entertainment showing IRDL games on cable TV which resulted
in alot of the games in circulation today. Let's fast forward to 1999.
That year Cavalcade of Sports Media made a large sports film purchase
which included the IRDL games and 1950's games. The press release was
on the internet I was surprised nobody saw it. In Dec 2005 Cavalcade
sold their collection to Collectible Concepts Group which is a sports
licensing company with MLB,NBA and NFL agreements (see press release
link below). CCG has partnered this year with Back in Time TV to
market and distribute many of the vintage games in this library.

A recent poster has quit this board. When I asked the poster why, the
poster said, loosely paraphrased, the poster was tired of reading
posts that disagreed with the poster's point of view. When I tried to
respond ("Sorry you left, hope you reconsider"), my response bounced
back, so I guess I've been placed on Ignore.
Traffic has slowed noticeably on this Board, but that's OK; it's
recovered before. If it doesn't, that's OK, too. This job was thrust
upon me many years ago, and I've maintained the Board the way you
would expect a journalist with no close connections to skaters would--
all viewpoints are welcome. I belong to other sports and political
boards in which flame wars are constant, and often get very personal,
but I think they're the better for it because members are exposed to
all manner of opinions.
In short, this is not the place to come if you're offended by the
opinions of people who disagree with you. If, instead of quitting,
you would post a contrary opinion, I'd be delighted.
WHATS IN A NAME
ROLLER DERBY
To each of us the name Roller Derby brings with it memories and
dreams. To each of us it means something different or the same.
For me, it recalls memories of friendships I still cherish, rivals I
still recall, dreams that were fulfilled. It represents a treasure
chest
of irreplacable times gone by. Recently there has been much
discussion of the use of the name,
ROLLER DERBY. I personally do
not know who, if anyone owns the rights to the name. My guess would
be, that if someone owned the rights, much of the current
discussion would be moot, and the name
ROLLER DERBY would not be in use as it is now.
As a retired old timer, I have very
strong feelings about all the new styles of games that have attached
themselves to that name. However, heres a little different
slant on this topic from a different point of view. While I will
always be a purist in regard to Derby, I remember from history, that
the True Game we all love started out as something very different
than the game it evolved into. The original Roller Derby started
as a marathon race, and over time grew into what we now remember as
the true Roller Derby. My point is simply, as much as we
might not love the new game, what if over a period of time, it too
evolves into a truer form of the game we remember and love?
When it comes to pleasing the public, and that's the bottom line, if
the sport is to grow and evolve, much of that progress will
depend on fan involvement and acceptance. Derby is like every other
pro sport, the fans dictate your progress by buying tickets.
It's not rocket science, give them what they want (BUILD IT AND THEY
WILL COME) they will support the game. I cannot tell you
about the 40's, but I can clearly recall the 50's and 60's. What
stands out most in my mind was the unbelievable chemistry of the
skaters of that era. It was pure magic. The personalities, the speed,
the power, the emotion, it was always special. I would love to
think that could be recaptured again in the present or future.
Sometimes there are just times so special, they can never be
duplicated,
nor should they be. I'm no different than most of you, I would like
nothing better than to turn on my TV, and see the game I loved
so much, being played the way is should be played. The only way I can
think of to cause change is thru education. If somehow
there was a way to televise the old games, maybe then there would be
an opportunity to rekindle the flame. It is difficult to
explain the real game to a generation that has never seen the real
thing. I can't fault the younger generation for exploring the
possibilities of creating a new roller derby, when they are clueless
of the original. Maybe it is our responsibility to teach them.
If we want to truly pass the torch, we need to show them how to carry
it. Respectfully Bonnie Nelson
I certainly hope the girls keep their Rollergirl name.
More power to them, then. But please don't try to
call it Roller Derby. It'll just be another nail in
the coffin of the REAL Roller Derby.

I hope that it happens, and I've expected for a long time that it
would. The "Rollergirl" concept is highly marketable. I suspect,
however, that they will want to do what the "RollerJam" people did
on TNN--condense the action into one-hour segments.
