John and I are not available today or tomorrow. David and Andrew may be
available this weekend. They would be good help for the heavy items. I can help
in the evenings this week with the smaller items, and might be able to borrow
the van. John and I can help next weekend during the day. Are we having class
Monday and/or Tuesday this week??? Give us a call.

Thank you Sir. As always, I very much enjoyed class. And I agree that the participating students were all very impressive. Not having seen Erin in action before, I was very pleased to see (and hear) more of who she is, and of the quality she adds to our class.
Please let me know if you need any more "bio" words from me, or if you have any questions about those already provided. Also, I am an excellent proof-reader, if ever needed.
Thank you,

I just saw a billboard for a fund raiser called Walk
and Roll. Looks interesting. Does anybody have any information about this? This
might be a fun event for us to participate in. I just came home from visiting
my parents. They live in Sandy
which is part of the Hood to Coast relay route. It was fun to see the runners
and the volunteers. I thought to myself, "self, it would be fun to
volunteer for something like this". And myself said back, "back, yes
it would. Perhaps Baileys Academy/Clan Bailey could get involved in that Walk
and Roll fund raiser".
To do that we need more information. What say you????

For the first time ever, Clan Bailey will have a tent in the Seattle Highland Games at Enumclaw, Washington. I would love to have members of this group marching with the Bailey clan in the clan parade both Saturday and Sunday. Bring a sword if you wish and wear any tartan!
Hope to see you there.
His Excellency, Sir Douglas Bailey, 13th armorial Head of the House of Bailey, hereditary Knight of Altenburge, PNW Representative and Knight of the Imperial and Sovereign Order of Constantine the Great and St. Helen.
A gathering of the clans will take place this Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, ORegon. Clan Bailey will be out in force for this event. We hope to see all of you there. Wear your Bailey kilt and a blue shirt, bring your basket hilt, and march in the parade with us. Or bring your cameras and take pictures. Or a combination of both would be good too.
H.E. Douglas Bailey will be teaching two classes on the Highland broadsword. This was a special request by the games committee for Douglas to teach classes again this year as they were a highlight of the games last year for many people. Speaking of cameras (see above), I would really appreciate a photographer for the broadsword classes. We would like to post photos of that on the web site. Volunteeers would be much appreciated.
At some point during the day we would like to have a quarterly meeting for Clan Bailey to touch base with all of the officers and any interested clan members. Douglas has been exploring the possiblity of meeting afterwards for dinner in an air-conditioned room. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I understand for the competitors point of view of what they were trying to do.
Blue was using a basic lead leg kick that was more of a distractor to the
defensive guard. either by being a front kick or a round kick throwing to 2
different levels as a round and straight in a s a front.
this is used 2 fold
1. to score.
2 to move the hands to create an opening, for her consistent 2 punch followup.
seeing that red was just a defensive counter puncher,
strategy to keep her blocking and delay the counter punch giving the advantage
to the attacker, <which worked>
Problems seen.
way to much rushing in and "forcing" the technique and "strategy"
making it a 2 trick pony,
Thins to make this better,
1 Don't rush and force. look for the correct timing. use hands first to mix it
up and rear leg, then it becomes a rounded fighter, and not a lopsided left
lead only fighter, learn distancing and the real fine points of it.<i saw none
from blue>
red.
Counter puncher relying on baiting and trapping. was very good at this to a
point,
One could see that she was used to the "game" of a one 2 attach stop and pose
for the reff.
when the woman in blue attacks with a 3 to 4 combo she is 1 to 2 strikes out of
the reds experience.
red needs to get out of the comfort zone of right hand reverse punch and grow
as
a point fighter, by using stop or intercepting timing and move to the <her
left>
and should stop being a target. also use sweeps as they are legal. and blue
was in position to receive on many occasions.

I think the red competitor actually was faster
with her punches, unfortunately she didn’t know how to position herself
to take advantage of that. Had she moved outside the constant mid level round
house kick she could have used a backhand or left hand trap and reverse punch
to score on a head attach. The other advantage would have been to move to her
left grab and pull the reverse punch arm and move to an advantages position at
or behind the hip of the blue competitor. I think neither of them really had
the experience to understand point and circle counter attacks.

Those were my impressions
too. I also notice the blue competitor was definitely more aggressive and
usually led with a waist-high (or occasionally higher) kick followed by one or
two punches. The red competitor attacked a few times and did get in a couple of
hits, but was mostly on the defensive.
It looked like the blue competitor was much lighter on her feet and quicker to
move, while the red competitor was more flat-footed.
The rules also seemed to prohibit any type of trapping, as there were multiple
time the red competitor (the one who was primarily defensive) could have
grabbed the blue competitors ankle during the roundhouses. And it looked like
some of the hits (both kicks and punches) landed pretty solidly, but many or
even most of the hits were more for points than power.

Comments on Sparring,
One competitor was nearly always only defending and seemed to almost never take
the aggressive position. The other competitor was relatively predictable after
the first few attacks. Almost all attacks were round house kick followed by
reverse punch and sometimes two punches. Its always difficult to judge without
knowing the point criteria. The one defending constantly didn't seem to know
how to take advantage of predictable moves, didn't use her own kicks to any
advantage and never moved to the outside of the constant left round house kick.
They both appeared to be to limited in the techniques they were willing to use.
I have to assume that the rules limit the competitors to no foot sweeps and no
take downs. Points were likely only given for a head or abdominal punch or
kick. Its hard to evaluate without knowing the rules or the experience level of
the competitors.

a great grind house film.. no as good as kung fu hustle
Sang Kuan Chun (Jack Long) is an old kung fu master who is getting ready to
retire from martial arts. He is satisfied that he's mastered the martial arts
and is the best in China. But just as he is about to put up the kings signboard
and call it quits, he receives a note alleging that he's not the best. Thus
begins his journey for one last challenge with each of the Seven Grandmasters to
prove his superiority. As Sang Kuan Chun and his three students travel from one
challenge to the next, the foursome acquires a fifth—a young man named Siu Ying
(Lee Yi Min) who wants desperately to train under master Sang Kuan Chun to
avenge his father's death. So he tags along, despite the master's insistence
that he will not accept any more students. Eventually we learn more about the
master's past. His own teacher, before he died, left him the secret book of The
Pai Mei Twelve Strikes. However a masked man soon stole several pages of the
book, leaving only nine strikes. So, somewhere out there, is this unknown man,
and he has the final three strikes of Pai Mei, which are the most deadly and can
beat even the other nine strikes. Sang Kuan Chun soon accepts the seemingly
devout Siu Ying and teaches him the nine known strikes of Pai Mei. Siu Ying ends
up learning from his "uncle" that Sang Kuan Chun (who was set up) killed his
father during a friendly tournament. Siu Ying is taught the final 3 strikes from
a mysterious figure and almost kills Sang Kuan Chun until he realizes he is in
the wrong. This all leads up to an exciting climax, where we learn the identity
of the masked man who stole the Pai Mei final strikes and the identity of the
man who killed Siu Ying's father.

By the way, the Festival is April 4th, but I'm sure I am the only one not up to date on events and such.

My apologies. I have posted the updates here in the past to keep students up to date and did not think it would be a problem....until I discovered that the list I was given last night was not correct. Hereafter, I will let you or Sensei Barone post the updated kata list.
Here is an interesting looking conference for martial arts
comparisons. It is actually a two day event, but the two days are
several weeks apart. The first day is this Saturday and the next day
is April 4th. Sensei Hank Prohm is listed as teaching a Shito Ryu
class this Saturday, and our own Sensei Douglas Bailey is scheduled to
teach a class in Highland Broadsword on April 4th.
Here is the website for this event:
http://pacificmartialartsconference.com/
In the middle of the two days of classes is the Eugene Asian Festival.
The web site for this event is not quite ready but should be available
soon at:
www.asiancelebration.org/
This is the weekend of Feb 14th (yes, THAT weekend...Oregon's 150th
birthday). There will be martial arts demonstrations at this as well
as many other demonstrations, musicians, food, vendors, etc..
Either of these events would be useful for Baileys Academy students to
attend and/or participate in.
