Thanks for posting the (very sad) update from Eric. I will be glad to see him and his wife back in class, but I sure wish it could have been under different circumstances.
Hope you have a good Labor Day, -Camille

Hello Camille,
You asked about my returning to class. I may indeed be able to start attending class with you guys again. My oldest son is just dicovering the freedom of owning his own car. It seems he may be too busy to take classes with his old man. If this is the case I will come running back begging to learn everything I have missed. While the study of japanese sword is very reawarding i miss the mix of sword and emty-hand study that you guys get. I can not spare the time for two seperate schools so the unique class Bailey Sensei offers is perfect for me. Class location and times have changed and I have lost track of the "where and when". perhaps someone could post the info for me. I would like to drop by for a visit if it would not be too disruptive to class. Maybe the Big Guy could weigh in on that and let me know how he feels about a visitor.

Hi all. The venue and dates for the upcoming Anthony DeLongis

Anthony DeLongis seminar!
The venue has been reserved for October 27th (evening talk), 28th
and
29th,
and will take place at the Thomas Edison high school in Portland.
The address is 20 SW Beaverton Hillsdale, Portland, OR 97225.
Also, a change in the training has been made. Instead of doing
blade/stick/knife work as well as bullwhip, we've cut it down to just
blade/stick/knife. Anthony will, however, give a demo on the
bullwhip
and
show how it relates to sword and stick and even unarmed combat. This
decision was made because we didn't want to split the time up too
much. We
would rather good students a solid foundation in one area rather
than
shaky
foundations in a few. If there is enough interest, another weekend
seminar
can be made just for the whip.
To reserve your spot in the seminar it requires that students send
in
a $50
deposit. This deposit is nonrefundable, unless the date of the seminar
changes to a time when the students cannot make it, in which case
your money
will be returned. Checks should be made out to Kendall Wells and
sent
to the
following address: 180 SW 85th Ave. Portland, OR, 97225. Students
will then
be expected to have a check for $200 made out to Anthony DeLongis upon
arriving at the seminar.
Again, if anyone has any questions, please contact me.
And continue to let people know about the event! The more students,
the
better.
Please be sure to contact me to sign up as soon as possible!

Hi Mike and all
Yes in Aussie land they did add a ban and a TAX. the Tax was for
those "collectors and all" at about $150.per sword.
I think the tax went the way of the dodo bird.
with 10 swords at my home that would be an uncomfortable "tax"
The attitude of the Aussies was NOT To have ANY DAMN YANKEE HELP.
in Polite terms that they did not use.
Now the UK has This Looming over their heads.
I think it will in some way pass.
Expecialy after a few years ago the naked man with a cheep mail
order Katana went into a church hacking away with a few people
injured. some where in Scotland.
(something to me says ban crazy naked people with swords)
Gangs have been using cheep mail order short swords to cary under
long coats.
But again Machetties could be used next. then who will stop lawn
mower blades mounted to makeshift handles?
But he could have done the same thing with a garden tool.
butcher knifes could be remounted on 2 and a half foot handles
quite easly. and become a glave.
what needs to happen is to improve the situation not to start
banning thins that has never worked.
besides trying to kill some one last time I Checked was Illegal.

Dear All,
The Scottish executive has recently announced its proposals towards
establishing new laws in Scotland, which include a ban on the sale of
swords. Exemptions are included for religious, cultural and sporting
reasons, yet this is despite a public consultation on the subject
confirming that most respondees were entirely against a ban on the
sale of swords.
The original story can be found at -
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/glasgow_and_west/4788881.s
tm
Rational explanations democratically presented to the Scottish
Parliament have yet to be heeded - that a licencing scheme for
manufacturers and retailers will have no impact upon street crime,
this being the supposed reasoning for such proposals and laws being
pushed through.
Such schemes will only incur costs and additional paperwork for
manufacturers and retailers in Scotland while anyone wishing to
circumvent the new `tough laws` can simply order online or by mail
order.
To this day, the Executive has yet to back up its assertions that
swords present a great threat to the Scottish public with any hard
facts or figures.
This means that we are in danger of seeing the Scottish Executive
press ahead with proposals and implementation of new laws based
entirely upon supposition and their own media fearmongering campaign.
This heralds a very dangerous precedent for any new laws being
established in Scotland and cannot be allowed to happen.
The facts are that physical attacks with swords in Scotland are of
course extremely few and far between, forming considerably less than
1% of all attacks with ANY edged weapons.
The Executive would also have us believe that `non-domestic knives`
are a great threat and problem, and is presently proposing a licencing
scheme for the sale of these in Scotland. Again, NO hard facts or
figures have been presented to prove that any such danger exists.
The facts are that most knife attacks in Scotland are carried out with
DOMESTIC knives, these being the cheapest, most easily available and
concealable of all blades available on the street today.
The Executive has yet to back up its assertions with any facts and
prefers to hide behind a smokescreen of scaremongering in the hope
that the Scottish public shall simply follow in deference to its voice
of `authority`.
The Save Our Swords petition was handed in to the Scottish Parliament
last year with over 2000 signatures in total. At that time, the
petition was open only to Scottish residents. Now, we open the
campaign to all and any interested individuals worldwide who wish to
support our cause.
We would like to collect as many more names and comments as possible
in response to the present threat to Scottish culture in seeing swords
disappear from our High Street retailers. If the Parliament gets it
way, any tourist visiting Scotland would not be able to purchase a
sword as a symbolic souvenir of our cultural nation.
Let us not allow this to happen.
This petition is open to all and shall be resubmitted to the Scottish
Parliament with a greater voice and an extensive and detailed covering
letter addressing our most recent concerns.
If you have not already added your name and comments (sensible ones
only please, aggressive or inappropriate comments shall be removed),
then please do so by following the online petition link below. If you
have already added your name, please forward this to as many
interested parties that you may know.

resubmission at the end of September 2006.

thanks in advance.

Chivalry Bookshelf is currently running a special on a couple of the Highland sword manuals.
If you order "Highland Broadsword" (the one with the blue cover) through their default seller, http://www.revival.us/, there is an option to also purchase a copy of "Highland Swordsmanship" (the one with the red cover, contains McBane's manuscript) for only $12.50 more, which is a 66% discount off the regular price of "Highland Swordsmanship".
With discount: $34.95 "Highland Broadsword" + $12.50 "Highland Swordsmanship" = $45.45 for both.
Without discount: $34.95 "Highland Broadsword" + $29.95 "Highland Swordsmanship" = $62.90 for both.
No, I don't know how long they are going to offer this discount.

P.S. Stephen Hand's interpretation of Silver's fights is also
available, "English Swordsmanship: The True Fight of George Silver". It is hardcover, and therefore kind of pricey ($49.95).

I received an e-mail to the Bailey's Academy website from Moe O'Connor, the Faculty Chair of the Physical Education department at the Sylvania campus of Portland Community College. (The e-mail was dated August 21st.)
Mr. O'Connor is conducting interviews for a part-time faculty position for Fall 2006 for a Tai Kwon Do instructor. The course is a one hour PE credit on Mondays & Wednesdays from 3 PM to 4:20 PM.
"Interested applicants should be qualified as a Tai Kwan Do instructor and have either a Masters or Bachelors degree, or teaching equivalent." Anyone wishing to set up an interview should please contact:

P.S. Yes, I am assuming Tai Kwon Do is the same as Tae Kwon Do, and is not some weird variant that includes Tai Chi. :)
After reading all of the posts on quitting students, I thought that this article that Dr. Robyn Silverman wrote for parents on dealing with how to teach respect for commitment would be helpful for everyone :-)
We e-mail this out to our clients every year and actually send it directly to all new students that join as a way to pre-frame the importance of sticking with their commitments.
In addition, keep your eyes peeled for a really meaty article that is set to appear soon in M.A. Success magazine entitled "I Wanna Quit!" It is chock full of strategies and systems to follow when you start to hear those miserable words, "I wannna quit".
"I want to quit!" Teaching respect for commitment to children Robyn J.A. Silverman, PhD
"I want to quit!" is becoming as prevalent as the droning chant, "are we there yet?" As parents it exasperates us and as educators it is like nails across a chalk board. But perhaps what is most frustrating is that we find that children are losing respect for commitment. Whose fault is that?
While we do not want to point fingers and place blame, it is important to reflect on the question of responsibility. Teaching respect for commitment is somebody's job. It is often left to the parents to teach these lessons. But nobody can teach these lessons alone. Remember, "it takes a village?"
Perhaps where we all go wrong in teaching respect for commitment to children is that we talk about it when commitment is already an issue. This is a common mistake. Well-intentioned adults are often guilty of talking about being strong in character once a weakness in character is detected. For example, we talk about respect when a child is being disrespectful and we talk about fairness when a child is being unfair. The secret is—and perhaps we should all listen closely—that we need to teach strength in character when the child is exhibiting strong character. The old adage; "let sleeping dogs lie" does not apply here. Recognize it, point it out, praise it.
Here are some tips on teaching respect for commitment to children:
(1) Teach it before it becomes an issue: Respect for commitment and hard work should be part of the daily lexicon of any parent and teacher. Small praise phrases such as "I appreciate your hard work and commitment to this team," or "it is clear that your hard work and commitment are paying off" can assist in bringing the notion of dedication to the forefront. A good character development program for parents will give you the powerful structure for talking about commitment with your children.
(2) Reach out for assistance: If a parent does not have the time or "know-how" to have consistent, in depth conversations with their child about character and commitment, there are a few things you can do. First, purchase a systemized, easy-to-use character curriculum that can be delivered in small increments at home and without the need of a great deal of training. In addition, enlist the assistance of a powerful martial arts or religious program that already has a systemized character education piece in place to help teach these important concepts to your children. You can also enlist the help of a success coach for you or your children. These programs and coaches can become your partners in success!
(3) Do your homework: Find out if the program is suitable to your child and to your family. Just because everyone is playing soccer or t-ball does not mean that it is right for your child. Does your child like playing on a team or would an individual activity like martial arts or horseback riding be more suitable? Does it meet at a time when the child is energized or grouchy? Does it meet at a time when you are available or stressing in traffic? What is the coach or instructor like? I once met an 8 year old student who was scared of his militant martial arts teacher and decided not to continue. He shyly entered a new martial arts school across town and met the upbeat instructor and found a perfect fit. He is now going for his first grade black belt at age 11 years.
(4) Explain commitment each time the child commits: When a parent is getting ready to enroll a child in a program, a discussion should ensue. The child should be made aware of the time commitment as well as the commitment to effort that he must give throughout the time that he is part of the program. Parents should discuss the benefits of joining the program with the child as well as what the child will have to give-up while he is in the program. This way, there are no surprises.
(5) Explain it in their terms: When explaining the commitment to a younger child, I encourage parents to explain it in terms that a child can understand. It makes no sense to use abstract terms with a child who developmentally, thinks concretely. Avoid abstract explanations such as "Johnny, when you commit, you will need to commit fully to the process." A child will not be able to grasp onto that kind of rationalization. One good example of a concrete explanation of commitment is, "Johnny, you know how it is really warm out and we are wearing shorts? When you commit to being part of this class, you will be in it until it gets really cold out, we have big jackets on, and Christmas morning is right around the corner."
(6) Put it in writing: I have often had parents and children put the commitment down in writing, sign it in front of the instructor, and then hang it in a prevalent place where they can see it each day. The commitment should be read out-loud at the time of signing so that the child understands that commitment is taken seriously.
(7) Investigate the issue: If your child tells you that he wants to quit, don't ignore it. Find out why. The issue could be as serious as the child feels threatened by someone or as minor as the child wants to play with one of his friends during practice instead. Sometimes you may find that a child will always find something wrong. Nip this in the bud. Part of making commitments is keeping them! Not everything can always go the child's way. I remember one parent telling me that she asked her child one day, "who is the boss in this house?" to which the child replied, "I am the boss." The problem was dually noted, don't you think?
(8) Make sure you are not the problem: Putting a lot of pressure on your child to succeed in their extra-curricular activities can have a lasting and negative effect. Encouragement and support are advantageous but constant harping and hairpin corrections can be detrimental. Revisit the reason why your child is in the activity—is it for self esteem-building and fun or for training for the Olympics? In nearly all cases, let the instructor be the coach and let the parent be the parent.
(9) Don't over-schedule: Children need downtime. They need cuddle-time. They need decompression time. Don't you? If your child points out that they like 4 different activities have them choose which one they would like to participate in at this time. After all, everyone gets crabby while running from place to place. Summer time, or vacation time, can always be used for extra activities.
(10) Make sure that they follow-through: When it comes down to it, barring any threatening or harmful situations, a child must learn to follow-through when they commit to something. As a parent, you know best. The child is looking to you for guidance. If you teach them to commit, they will learn about hard work and perseverance. If you teach them that it is OK to quit, they will learn that if they complain long enough, hard work and perseverance are not necessary.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?), No. Shelby is something like 90 miles away from where I am right now. If I was going to be here another week, I might consider it, but I since this is my last day before heading back to Portland, I decided to stay home with my parents & enjoy the peace & quiet.
When I get back I may see if there's any information about it online. I am really kind of curious, as (a) Shelby IS only 3,200 people afterall, and it's not near any large metropolitan areas. Cutbank and Havre are probably the closest larger towns, and I don't think either of them is bigger than about 10,000 people, but (b) just because Shelby is small doesn't mean the event isn't well-run (John Day is pretty small too and those games turned out pretty well), and if last year it got people from Alberta & Saskatchewan, then maybe it's not too bad.

The punchline to all of this is that in the 2000 census, Shelby (Montana) had a population of 3,216.
No, there's no missing zeroes there, the population really is under four thousand.
That said, here is a fascinating article from the latest edition of the Shelby Promoter: :

The local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) has good reason to celebrate.
Earlier this summer the Shelby group was made official and now has full Shire status. The local group is now known as the Shire of Windegate and members will be hosting Whipping Winds III at Williamson Park Aug. 25-27. The SCA is a
historically based group that recreates the arts and sciences as well as the combat of the time period known as the middle ages. Activities planned for the weekend will include classes on various arts of the times, traditional archery and armored combat. There will be an auction and the event will culminate with a grand feast on Saturday night.
Last year there was good attendance from north of the border as participants from Alberta and Saskatchewan came down to make friendly war on their southern neighbors. This year looks to be on track to be bigger than last year, with feast reservations already sold out at the 125 person maxim um. The event will begin Friday at 10 a.m. with the site opening and concludes Sunday at 4 p.m. when all guests are expected to be gone from the campgrounds. The event is for SCA members and there is a fee to enter the campground over the weekend. Non-members may pay a $3 non-member surcharge, in addition to the regular fees, and join in
the fun.
Armored combat battles begin at 1 p.m. Saturday and the site will be open to the public free of charge while the fighting is going on during the early afternoon. Visitors will have a chance to witness medieval combat on a first hand level as shield and sword will lie on. The armies of Avacal (Canada) will face those of the lands of Artemisia (Montana, Idaho and Utah) in friendly competition to the ‘death' in several field scenarios. Planned combat will include an open field battle, bridge battle, castle battle and a woods battle. Also planned for the day will be rapier fighting (fencing) and several scenarios will be fought by these lightly armored combatants.
The local group will play host to ‘Royalty' as the King and Queen of Artemisia, as well as their heirs, the Prince and Princess, will be in attendance. The Avacalian's will have royal presence as well, as the Prince and Princess of that realm will also be guests to our area. So don't be shocked
as you may happen across those that seem as if they are from another time over the weekend of Aug. 25-27. The lives and times of those who were thought past and forgotten will come to life at Williamson Park as the Shire of Windegate hosts Whipping Winds III. For more information on the local SCA group, contact Adrienne or Terrell Cotterell at 434-3177 or SCA.org on your home computer. We remind everyone that the park will be closed to the public for the duration of this private pre-reserved event. Minors without a legal guardian or parent present will not be allowed on site due to insurance limitations.

The band, Amadan, will be playing at the Carnegie Center in Oregon City, Oregon tomorrow evening at 6:30. This is a free concert sponsered by local businesses. There is also food available starting at 5:30. That is not free, and is a benefit for the Fill A Stocking, Fill A Heart organization.
Bring your own chair/blanket to sit upon. There is plenty of shade.
The Carnegie Center is located at 606 John Adams Street. 7th Street is the main cross street.
Amadan is described as Irish Stout Music. I would describe them as a Celtic Punk band. They are very fun.
Hope to see some Baileys/Baileys Academy people there.
Had a good time at the "Uptown Festival" in Vancouver. Watching
Cameron crash through the trellis was more fun than I've had in a
while :-) I wish I had a picture of that. Cameron got even though with
three good welts across my forearm. Thanks for a good match Cameron.
Anyway, the point of my post is that while I got permission from my
boss to get off early on Tuesday so I can stay in the Class I have a
friend who is gravely ill in the Hospital and I will have to miss class
tonight to visit her. She is in a good deal of pain. Her prognosis is
not good and her time may well be short but her spirits are good. I
would ask those of you who are religious in nature to say a prayer for
her comfort and the solace of her family. Thanks,
Jamie

I've updated the class website to include the new class times of 6 PM to 8 PM. The times are kind of buried in the text in the central part of the front page (http://www.baileysacademy.com/index.html), but I've also put a specific notice about class times changing in the right-hand column.
It seems like there is another place on the site where class times are specifically mentioned, I'll look that up and get it changed (if necessary) when I get back from Montana.
Karate Kicks and Boxing Blows Can Be Deadly Weapons: TV Review Aug. 17 (Bloomberg) -- The human body, sometimes worshipped as a temple, can also be a deadly weapon -- even without assistance from Smith & Wesson or our highly greased defense industry.
``Fight Science,'' a fascinating special running Aug. 20 on the National Geographic Channel at 9 p.m. New York time, shows us that motivated people can train themselves to strike four times faster than a rattlesnake, kick a target with thousands of pounds of force, and, like Superman, break through thick walls with a single bound.
Some humans are higher caliber weapons than others, to be sure, and National Geographic has assembled a cast of martial- arts masters under the direction of Hollywood stuntman James Lew.
The program was filmed in a studio equipped with infrared and high-speed cameras, plus a $150,000 dummy officially known as the ``Hybrid III anthropomorphic test device,'' unofficially as Hybie. Randy Kelly, a goateed automotive crash expert, oversees the technical end as Hybie gets kicked, kneed, punched and otherwise beaten like a cheap rug.
There are no wimps here. These skilled practitioners of kung fu, jiujitsu, tae kwon do, muay thai and karate look to have been cut from the same Kevlar mold as Bruce Lee and perform amazing feats of destruction.
Banana Trees
A karate side kick, for instance, delivers more than 1,000 pounds of force. Yet that's nothing compared with the knee-to- sternum blow from a muay-thai master, which equals the impact of being hit by a car traveling 35 miles per hour. A human target, we see with the help of animation, would suffer shattered ribs driven deep into the heart and lungs. In another words, death.
These disciplines require rigorous practice, the show points out. Some muay-thai experts whack banana trees a thousand times a day to deaden nerves, thus making the decimation of an opponent a relatively painless process for them.
Then there's good old kung fu, which originated in a Chinese temple about 500 A.D. and places an emphasis on speed. With the help of an ``accelerometer,'' we learn that a master can deliver a blow at a speed of 40 feet per second, some four times faster than a rattler.
Traditionalists and barroom brawlers will be pleased to see that boxing remains a highly effective way of knocking an opponent senseless. A well-delivered punch can deliver 1,000 pounds of force to an opponent's head. Animation shows us the devastating result: The brain slams into the back of the skull and bounces forward for a secondary collision, causing an electrical short circuit in the nervous system. Lights out!
Running Through Walls
The test dummy isn't the only thing that takes a beating. Piles of cinderblocks and bricks return to the dust from which they came, often in highly dramatic fashion. In one scene a bullish fellow lowers his shoulder and crashes through 20 concrete slabs. He can also, the show adds, run through a six- foot-thick wall of ice. This guy could hire himself out as a battering ram, or perhaps a bunker-buster.
A pile of bricks meets a similar fate, though this time the weapon of mass destruction is the unadorned skull. How's that make the master head-butter feel? The same as hitting a telephone pole while traveling 20 miles per hour. His eyes look a bit crossed just after impact, but whatever pain is experienced is clearly compensated for by the resulting ego boost.
Engineers are suitably impressed.
``In my research, I have seen car crashes, I have seen impacts on the football field,'' said Tim Walilko, who studies impact trauma. ``I have never seen feats of strength like this in any of the other disciplines that I've done research in.''
Most viewers wouldn't take on any of these guys. The only humans more powerful, it seems, are the slack-bellied schlubs who fashion themselves masters of war.
I am trying to get together a list of book for the website. I already know about Bubishi, but Matt Vernon said there was another book about karate that you had recommended to him that was quite good. Could you send the title & author for that book, and do you want it added to the website as supplementary material for the class?
Doug,
Thank you for the historical information. That was very interesting. I
had not previously really understood the relationship between Mabuni and
Itosu.
Thanks!

Karate originated as a martial art thousands of years ago and was
brought to Japan from China, Taiwan and Okinawa. Many of the famous
Karate-ka, or Bushi as they were known in Okinawa, experimented and
developed their skills in such provinces as Shuri, Naha and Tomari.
But unlike Judo and Kendo, Karate was a secret art, unknown to the
general public. There was no fixed system until approximately 1907
when Yasutsune Itosu of Shuri and Kanryo Higaonna of Naha-both of
whom are regarded today as two of the most influential teachers of
Okinawan Karate-gained a good following for both of their own special
styles.
Kenwa Mabuni who had studied under both Master Yasutsune Itosu
and Master Kanryo Higaonna devised the Shito-Ryu system. Born in
1889, Mabuni was the 17th generation son of a famous samurai named
Onigusuki. Mabuni was keenly aware of the accomplishments of his
brave ancestors and, wanting to overcome poor health, began intensive
karate training at the age of 13. He also studied weapon techniques
of the Bo, Sai, Tonfa, and Kama. After learning from other masters
like Master Aragaki and Master Matsumura and by mixing the teaching
of Master Itosu and Master Higaonna, he developed a new system,
originally named 'HANKO RYU' (Half-Hard style), but, later changed it
to reflect the deep respect he felt towards his two great masters and
called his new system Shito-Ryu.
The name 'Shito' is the combination of 'shi' and 'to' , the two
first characters of the names of Master Itosu and Master Higaonna .
In 1929 Master Mabuni made a permanent move to Osaka to teach at
universities and police departments. Over the next few years, Master
Mabuni dedicated himself to the further development and promotion of
Shito-Ryu Karate-do in the Osaka area. Among his many students
included was his son Kenzo Mabuni, Kosei Kuniba (founder of Seishin
Kai), Chojiro Tani (founder of Tani-ha Shukokai), Ryusho Sakagami
(founder of Itosu-Kai), Yoshiaki Tsujikawa, Ken Sakio, Jun-ichi
Inoue, Manzo Iwata, Toshiyuki Imanishi, Tokio Hisatomi and Ryusei
Tomoyori. At first he taught his own students pure Shuri-te then pure
Naha-te, but he also gave instruction in other master's styles.
In Japan, Shotokan-Ryu, Wado-Ryu, Goju-Ryu and Shito-Ryu are the
four main styles of Karate. Shito-Ryu is the style that preserves
most of the original Shuri-te techniques, compared with other styles
such as Shotokan and Wado. It also preserves original Naha-te
techniques together with Goju, although each style places emphasis on
different points. Technically, Shuri-te and Tomari-te have rather
fast and straight movements, while Naha-te has circular and supple
movements.
Master Mabuni died in his 64th year on May 23rd 1952, but his
system remains one of the four major styles in Japan.
Shito-Ryu
Master Kenwa Mabuni
Kenzo Mabuni Soke
SOKE KENZO MABUNI is the son of the founder of SHITO-RYU KARATE-DO.
He obtained permission from his father and joined his school when he
was 13 years old and therefore has been in SHITO-RYU KARATE-DO for
over 60 years. He first obtained his SHODAN (1st Dan) on August 1,
1943 and presently holds the JYUDAN (10th Dan) and is a well
respected master not only in Japan but also throughout the world.
After his father's death in 1952, his mother Mrs. KAME MABUNI came to
Kenzo Mabuni and requested that he take over the style. Kenzo Mabuni
could not decide at that time and went into seclusion for two years
to contemplate this great responsibility. He decided to accept this
responsibility and is the inheritor of his father's lineage making
him the 2nd Governor of SHITO-RYU and successor to this organization.
His father left him the SHITO-RYU name, his complete syllabus and the
DOJO with the Association name NIPPON KARATE DO KAI. All these remain
intact until today. He followed his fathers syllabus exactly the way
it was written down in 1929 and thats why he called it SEITO SHITO-
RYU or PURE, TRUE SHITO-RYU.
From that time, Kenzo Mabuni dedicated his life to preserving the
true lineage of his father's karate. He was not concerned with
politics or image and remained unknown to the outside world while his
older brother and others were spreading their influence in the name
of Shito Ryu Karate. In 1993, upon the request of his good friend
Osamu Ozawa (Shotokan master), Kenzo Mabuni travelled to Las Vegas
and exposed the world to Seito (pure) Shito Ryu, the true karate of
his father, Kenwa Mabuni. In April of 1994, Kenzo Mabuni conducted
seminars in Albany, New York and Phoenix, Arizona. Subsequent to
these seminars, Kenzo Mabuni established the Shito Ryu Karate Do Kai
of America (now called Shito-Ryu USA Karate Do Kai) comprised of
Dojo's that had requested of him consideration as his direct students
and received formal acceptance by his senior instructors, the Nippon
Karate Do Kai Shihan Kai.
Kenzo Mabuni's organization, Shito-Ryu International Karate Do Kai,
now has branches in North and South America, Europe, Asia and the
Oceania regions.
Grandmaster Kenzo Mabuni 10th Dan, the Soke of Shito-Ryu, passed away
at 2.45pm, on 26 June 2005.
Introducing the 3rd Soke: Tsukasa Mabuni
Tsukasa Mabuni is the Granddaughter of Kenwa Mabuni, the founder of
Shito-Ryu. Her father, Kenzo Mabuni, succeeded as the 2nd Soke of
Shito-Ryu when her grandfather passed away in 1952.
Continuing with Budo tradition, she has succeeded the role of 3rd
Soke of Shito-Ryu, upon the recent passing of her father.
She states that, "the organization of Shito-Ryu International Karate
Do Kai will continue on with the same objectives. I urge all Shito-
Ryu Karate-ka worldwide to support the organization which my
grandfather founded. The same organization which my father developed
as an international entity teaching Seito, or authentic, Shito-Ryu."
