In response to Alec Uitti
Hi , I'm John Sarter, and I have a group of folks from a local tri club who
are very interested in A.R. we have 3 teams going up to Sac for the high tech
to get our feet wet, and we'll see from there. We're interested in a get
together, as a matter of fact we may be putting on a group workout in China
camp State park, (San Rafael), consisting of Bay swim, or kayak, Mtb in the
park, and a trail run in the same. Looking at August probably. A BBQ would
follow at Mcnears beach park, where the transitions would be located. Anyone
interested??

It seems that there has been a flurry of interest in AR in the Bay area
that has found an outlet on this list. (thanks craig)
It seems that from my own experience trying to put together a team and from
what I've read, that there aren't enough of us yet to start a conversation
at a cafe and build a team.
I would like to make the first suggestion for an actual face to face get
together in order to de-mystify ourselves and find out exactly what our
potential is for forming teams.
I am willing to host this shindig if there is enough interest, so feel free
to contact me, or anyone else with that desire?

My name is Alec Uitti and I am most recently from Boulder. I have been
trying to find team members for the Cal-eco and more for the past 6 months.
I have resigned to probably having to wait till next year, considering the
interest level among my friends as well as my own injuries/training
schedule.
I am quite jazzed to compete in AR and to meet locals who are of the same
mental-ity.

I am going out of town for 2 weeks without any contact with civilization so
if you can't reach me right away I'll be back.

Tom,
I live in SF (inner sunset). MWF I run in the am and go to the gym in
the pm. TTH I bike across the bridge (not faithfully I must admit) in
the am and swim in the pm. On weekends I go for either a long road ride
or a mountain bike on one day and then a hike on the other. I have been
a climber for eight years, but have not done much in the last year (no
partner) but still want to. I tele in the winter and backpack in the
summer, have only kyaked once (in a bay). I started duathlons in
January and just did my first Triathlon. I'm wanting to get my riding
miles up so I can do a century, next year I want to do the Death Ride.
I have some Search and Rescue experience, but no navigation.

There. Does that help? Now you.

Melisa and Tom -

I've been reading the emails you've been exchanging and hope you don't
mind me poking my nose in. AR is something I have just recently heard
about but am very interested in trying. I live in SF (Cow Hollow) and run
or go to the gym almost everyday. I've done 5 marathons and 1 biathalon
(awhile ago). I started climbing about a year ago but broke my collarbone
soon after and have not gotten back into it (but I would love to find a
climbing partner). I've sea kayaked only once but loved it! If either of you
are looking for a riding partner on the weekends, I'd be very interested. I
haven't been too good about riding but I'm determined to change that. I
recently joined the Golden Gate Triathalon Club and at the last meeting
we had as our guest speaker a woman who recently completed the Eco
Challenge in Australia. Awesome! I hope to hear from you guys again!

Melisa,
Thanks for the info. I hope I didn't seem to blunt. It's just that I've been
looking for partners for a while now and you can waste a lot of time with
people who just want to talk about AR. You sound like you're ready to do
some
'doing'. Let me tell you a little about my plans and then I'll bore you with a
brief bio.

I am looking to be a part of a competetive team that will consist of 5-8
core
members commited to an aggressive schedule - starting with 1 -2 day
events
with an eye to do 7 day events. I have met a couple people ( one with
AR
experience and an existing team - He is doing the death ride this
weekend by
the way) with similar goals. We are planning to get together probably on
the
27th of this month for a try out hike (6pm to 5am somewhere locally).
This
will be new to me too but it seems the best way for everyone to see if
this is
even up their alley. If this sounds like what you'd like to try let me know.
I live in St. Helena. I'm an avid trail runner. I love endurance. I'm training
to do the Berkeley 50mi ultra in Oct. (we'll see). Currently, I'm up to 35mi
at a time. I've done some marathons and a Tri. ( only liked it so- so, I'm not
much for road riding). I do a a lot of Enviro Sports races in the bay ( all
trail stuff, if you haven't heard of them check 'em out on the web). I'm
also
an experienced (I guess) Mt. Biker, Kayaker(been a few years),
swimmer and
hiker. No climbing experience at all. Maybe you can help me. Not so crazy
about that height thing. I'm entered in the Hi-Tec race in Sac. Are you
planning on doing it?
Talk to you soon, Tom

Hello to all Bay Area Adventure Racers,

1. Is anyone out there planning to do the Cal Eco in September (in SJ)and
need
a team mate? If so, I would be very interested.

2. Is anyone seriously interested in forming a team to do the Cal Eco in
September?

If you're not familiar with the race, it's a 1 to 2 day race in the San
Jose
area on September 17-20. More info available from Dan Barger at
calsports@...

I would also like to discuss teaming for future races. Ideally, to form a
team
with plans for a fairly agressive schedule for the '99 season.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I am interested, but I may have a few strikes against me.

1. it's two weeks after Canada
2. if I do somehow qualify for Kona, with divine intervention, or a sniper
takes out most of the M30-34 wave at IMC, I will be in taper for IMH.
3. I have never done an adventure race

on the postive side, I checked out the Cal-Eco website at www.csmevents.com
and

1. I am qualified to race in all of the events listed.
2. the race is about 5 miles from my house (if the rumors are true)
3. I will be well recovered from Canada by September 17th

So, count me in.

Ron

P.S. I sent an email to the race organizer. Send him your snail mail
address if you want an application packet. Check out the website for rules
and conditions.

Hi Jim.

Sure I would be happy to pass along the info. I will be competing in the
Pathfinder Wilderness Challenge in S. Wisconson this Saturday and will pass
along to others your interest in forming a team. There might be some there
looking for team members.

Have you advertised your interest on ARA & ARN

I have you email and printed the message to take with me.

Cheers.

Craig,

I am a Midwesterner looking for info on AR. If you know of anybody
in the Chicago area looking to form a team (or needs another member)
please put them in contact with me. I am a former Cat 1 bike racer
and ran in the World University Orienteering Championships in Finland
(1978) and many other meets. I have also run 10 marathons and one
ultra. I have some experience canoeing, but none sea kayaking. I
also have only limited climbing and rappeling experience. I will
also be attending the Presidio Adventure Racing Camp in the bay area
in Oct.

Thanks.

I took open bay I and II about 7 years ago at sea trek. I haven't kayaked at
all since then - moved to Sonoma County plus the kayaks turned to shit at
sea trek (and prices went up).

I'm not sure if I'm replying to the person who sent the post, or to the
list - new to this list.

If you want details of the open bay classes, I'll try to dig up memories.

Subject: [baar] Hello y'all and a Couple kayak questions

Okay here it is the first post of this list. I'd like to first of all
thank everyone for their interest. Hopefully this will turn out to be a
useful tool for those of us in the Bay area interested in AR. As of
this writing 25 people have joined the list which is much better then I
expected in only 5 days. I didn't think it would be all that worthwhile
to ask everyone to give a bio of themselves but maybe whenever you post
something you could add a few details at the end such as where you are
in the Bay Area, what sort of training you're doing for the day, and
what your next event is (I'm totally winging it here by the way, so feel
free to ignore me or offer up suggestions).

Okay so here are the first questions. Where and how much kayak training
do people do? And has anyone taken the open bay 1 class at Sea Trek in
Sausalito?
I usually get out and paddle about once a week for an hour or two on
Richardson bay (the little finger of the Bay in front of Sausalito).

Welcome again,
Craig

and following my own instructions:
San Francisco,
No training (my Achilles hurts and I'm going to see Terry Schneider
speak at the GGTC monthly meeting)
SF Marathon (the cheap and easy way...in a relay.)

Know almost nothing about AR but it sounds great. I run, mtn. bike, and

Hello y'all...Stu here.

I actually just started sea kayak a little over a month ago, but I have
logged a lot (relatively) of hours. I am usually out on the Bay three
times a week for about 3 hours a turn.

As far as beginning training is concerned (and I am talking sea kayak
here), I have been told that all of the major suppliers here in the Bay
Area do a competent job...the Oakland Trib just did a story on SK this
sunday and listed Cal Adventures at the Berkeley Marina (where I frequent)
as well as California Canoe & Kayak at Jack London Square, Oakland, and
some others. Check out Bay Area Sea Kayakers at www.bask.org for a
complete listing of service providers in the east, south, north Bay. I
have found that the first course just gives one the rudiments of
paddling....which are actually quite easy to get ahold of. I took a second
course at Cal Ad entitled "building confidence" and, with a lot of
practice, I have been told I am a strong paddler. Like anything else,
practice makes perfect.

Hi John and others.

Although I am not from the Bay area, I am an adventure racer. I have many
friends out west and see myself heading out there in a year or two. So I
hope you do not mind an occasional email or two from a midwesterner.

I have a good friend who lives in Chico. I have visited him often. I really
think the scenery is awesome out there. Have you been to Lassen Peak or
there are some falls not too far from Chico. Anyway I love it out in
California.

Our team (TEAM NO DOUBT) just formed with 2 guys and one girl. Our first
race is this Saturday and we are psyched. Then we will be competing in the
Desert Quest in Arizona in October.

If anyone is interested in a good trainer for horseback riding, I know of an
awesome trainer in Chico that will give you a great deal.

Anyway, this is a great list and I lookl forward to making some friendships
from ya'll out west. You are welcome to the midwest anytime.

Thanks

BAAR,

Hello group, I'm writing to ask if anyone know's of any mountain bike
triatholns in this region this summer. I had been training very hard for
Scott Tinely's Dirty Adventure at Kirkwood only recently to find out that
it has been cancelled this year. I don't own a road bike so the standard
tri's don't apply.

I would also like to find out other group members training regimen. I'm
pretty new to the tri/adventure racing family and would like to see what
other people are doing. I currently run about 30 miles/ mtb about 30miles/
swim about 1250yards a week. Swimming is definetly my weakest link and
it's also the hardest for me to motivate and push the extra yards out. I
would also love to get into kayaking but am already spread pretty thin.
I'm a pretty decent rock climber/mountanieer.

Take care,

-Brad Samuelson

Oh, by the way I just sent a reply. I'm Mike Perry of the GGTC. Live in San
Jose. Completed six triathlons so far, four this year. Mostly Olympic
distance. No experience in kayaking, but looking forward to trying it some
time.

RE>>[baar] A Couple kayak questions 7/6/98

I'm interested in learning to whitewater kayak at some point in the future,
but my finances aren't ready for it quite yet. I'm not sure whether you're
looking for whitewater kayak schools, but here is a brief list from an article
that appeared in the SF Chronicle about a month ago.

Kern Adventures: (888) 452-9245
www.kayaking.com (roll classes offered in Palo Alto this summer)
2- and 4-day classes out of Lotus on S. Fork of American River

Otter Bar Lodge: (916) 462-4772
www.otterbar.com
7-day courses on Salmon River

Sundance Kayak School: (541) 4798508
www.sundance-kayak.com
7- and 9-day classes on Rogue River in S. Oregon

Adventure Sports Unlimited: (888) 839-4286
www.asudoit.com
Beginning river kayaking "pool and stream" courses for ages 15 and up

Calif Canoe & Kayak: (800) 366-9804
www.calkayak.com
Basic 2-day river classes

You can also try:

Current Adventures: (530) 642-9755
Wolf Creek Wilderness: (530) 265-9653
Sierra Nevada Adventure Co: (209) 532-5621

Hope this Helps,

I'd like to add one question to Craig's:

"Where is the best place to get kayak training?"

I have done a few 4+ hour kayak trips in the 'sit on top' models, but I
want to learn how to use the closed style. I live in Mtn View, so if anyone
knows a good class in the South Bay please let me know. The next two
months are dedicated to IMC, but after that I should be relatively free to
cross over into kayaking etc.

The Bay Area Adventure Racing list is for anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area
interested in the sport of adventure racing (if you don't know what that is
check out:
http://yuri.harvard.edu/~nagle/ ). The intent of this list is to facilitate
team forming, share training information, and encourage the promotion of the
sport specifically for folks located near the SF bay.
