I was in the Folsom BB race this weekend and had a blast. Although a
novice to racing in this sport, I did this race last year, and I
have also participated in the Red Tail and Ocean Blue races this
year. This race is quite a bit easier than those two, but a little
more fun as they add some goofy tests. One teammate (Rob) for this
race was prepared, but our female (Karen), although a good runner
and triathlete, had only been on a mtn bike once before. The weather
was very cooperative - it was a comfortably warm temperature, unlike
last year. I don't think it sold out but they said there were over
250 teams (of three).

The course seemed a little longer than last year. There was no
navigation in this race - it did not have an orienteering section
and the course is well marked.

The race started with a 300 yd run on land with the inflatable
kayaks and without paddles. The paddles were located on an island
about 100 yards offshore. This all made the start of the race one
giant hilarious clusterfuck as boats and swimmers were everywhere.
We had the two guys in the front with Karen being dragged in the
second kayak. That worked well until the final leg when we had
trouble keeping our kayak straight and the trailer kayak only made
our deviations worse. I think our tow line was too long.

Coming out of the kayak we had to hug each other and roll through
the mud pit. We did not enter the water again. The bike stage
started without a cleanup and we were pretty much covered in mud the
whole race. There was bike stage 1, the run, and a repeat of the
bike stage. The bike stage was about 6 miles of gently rolling hills
without any serious climbs but very narrow and twisty. During the
first stage it is a little crowded with people trying to pass each
other. Unlike last year, at least I didn't have to stop to let a
snake go by. (Yes, I could have tried to jump it but snakes freak me
out just a little). The stage started and ended with some serious
sand to cross, which led to many teams having to push their bikes.

The lake shore had retreated a tremendous amount from last year, and
only twice did the run get us in water, and then only ankle deep or
less. About 5.5 miles. There was a lot of sand and also some
scrambling up and down some steep rocky sections.

The special tests were not outrageous. The coolest one was the maze.
I was blindfolded and had to carry one teammate (Karen). The third
teammate (Rob) had to be in physical contact with me but behind me.
We were not allowed any verbal communication as I was guided through
the maze. There was a section which I had to duck under and walk
through, without dropping Karen. Another test was filling a garbage
pail with lake water, using two small buckets, each with three holes
in the bottom. And then there was the obstacle course. This years
was a little shorter. It started with just a structure with high
wooden beams that you had to climb up and down. Of course, it ends
with the Wall. The wall is something like 11-12' high. Rob stood on
my shoulders and jumped, catching the top and pulling himself up and
over to the ledge. After we threw him the rope, Karen stood on my
shoulders, used the rope a little, and then Rob pulled her over. I
climbed the rope to finish.

We finished in less than 4 hours, at a relatively easy pace. This
year our female teammate did not swear to never race with us again,
so that is an improvement.

Last year I printed the directions to the park from the website
which has a mistake (We were not supposed to turn at Auburn-Folsom
Rd). This year I printed them again and they had the same mistake in
them, and we didn't know it until we were making the mistake again.
I'll remember now though.

Some lessons:
Shorter tow rope.
Don't turn at Auburn-Folsom Rd.
Ask our # 3 teammate to go mtn biking more than once before the race.

Howdy Bay Area Racers. Yak here from checkpointzero.com.

Just wanted to say hi. We've begun a string of enhancements to the
site and services we offer and ahead of going live with many of them
(most likely during the offseason) we're going to be doing what we
can to learn more about the various regional AR communities across
the country...online and off.

To that end I've joined your little collective for the sake of
eavesdropping :-)

I promise read quietly in the corner and to stay away from carpet
bombing your list with marketing gook or shameless plugs.

Ok I may drop a few shameless plugs, but that is only because I think
we have a great site with lots to offer...I promise if I do it will
be in the following format:

<PLUG>Be sure to send us your race reports.</PLUG>

From time to time I will post and let you know when we are featuring
content of interest to you. In large part these posts will refer to
race reports, images, or press releases relating to events in your
area.

Thanks for your hospitality :-)

PS - We are planning to attend more and more races going forward. I
hope to meet as many of you as possible over time.

Thanks for this, Eric,

I registed for the Tahoe Big Blue today ("Team Adventure Race Reports", of
all things), and was in need of a kayak -- perfect timing!

So... I just called Kayak Tahoe and they were very helpful. If we can
manage to get 10 rentals together for the race, they'll throw in delivery --
and we're now one rental closer! :-)

Good deal,

If you are in need of a kayak for the Big Blue race in Tahoe on Sept
11, consider renting from Kayak Tahoe (530-544-2011). They are
renting single ($30) and doubles ($40) for the race. If they get
enough reservations, then they will deliver the boats to the start
and pick them up at the finish. This is a huge benefit that I have
not been able to get other companies to do.

Happy racing,

Hi all,

If you like the “big picture”- big redwoods, big basin redwoods state Park, big climbs, big descents, than join me for a 57 mile ride to close the summer on Sunday Aug 29th, a weekend before labor day.

We will meet in downtown Saratoga (Exact location TBD),  where we will start with a 7 mile climb to skyline Boulevard.

The climb has a steady grade of about 6%, much of the way we’ll be climbing in the shade of trees, but from a few places  higher you’ll see Steven’s canyon.

Hwy 9 follows Saratoga creek for a few miles, we than get on 236. we turn back to Hwy 9 in boulder creek, than to Bear creek rd, than back to skyline. Back to 9, back to Saratoga and on for a drink.

Feel free to forward to anyone who might be interested.

Looking forward to riding with you!

Hi Runners:

Ding-Ding!! No, this isnt a boxing match--nor a bird, nor a plane.
It's the Cable Car Chase!

Just a reminder here that the Cable Car Chase is coming up in just a
few weeks, on Sunday, August 29, 2004! Please note that early
registration ends on August 14th, and entry fees will increase after
this date.

This is the quintessential SF race--hills, cable cars, and the ONLY
race in the world that is contested at 5.67 miles! Last year, Da
Mayor, Willie Brown, stood at the top of Nob Hill cheering on the
runners! If you've never run the Chase before, then setting a new PR
at this distance is all but guaranteed! And as a bonus, there will be
the traditional breaking of the sake barrel after the race. SAKE for
everyone! Proceeds from the event go to SFBC and Girls on the Run.

At this year's race, there will be an excellent prize package valued
at over $25,000, comprised of ANA travel & vacation awards, and prizes
provided by Brooks Sports and Fleet Feet! This year, we have added
awards for the top Masters and San Francisco resident.

This race is a great alternative for those of us who will not be in
Athens running the men's Olympic marathon on the same day! For more
info about the race, feel free to visit our website or contact us.

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you on race day!

In response to Craig's question:

And a question for the rest of you. Is there a web site that has some
kind of compilation of Bay Area reousources for adventure racing?
Races, trining, teams, gear, locations, organizations, etc? And if not
should there be one?

I've been working on a site to address this need.  It's wiki based, and currently it's public, so that means anyone and everyone is free to update and contribute to the knowledge base.  There are other sites better suited to this, but I thought at least we'd get something out there for people to work with.

The name doesn't exactly fit, but there's something :)

It's entirely a work-on-it-when-i'm-not-outside-or-working-or-racing kind of site.  So lots of room for improvement.

I'm sure there are more sites out there...

Howdy Angelique,
You'll probably get more targeted advice if you give us a little
information about where you're starting from. I.e. Are you relatively
new to endurance sports? Or you're already a world class kayaker,
mountain biker, orienteerrererer, trial runner?

And a question for the rest of you. Is there a web site that has some
kind of compilation of Bay Area reousources for adventure racing?
Races, trining, teams, gear, locations, organizations, etc? And if not
should there be one?

C!

Hi!

I've recently discovered the existence of adventure racing and it
sounds fantastic (it combines all the sports I love into one
package!). I live in Berkeley and would love to get some advice on
how to get started with training and teams in the Bay Area.

Thanks!
Angelique
