Kick off your spring training in Mexico with warm weather, culture, adventure, training, and fun.  Frontier Adventure Sports and Esprit Whitewater offer two all-inclusive, week-long adventure sports training camps this March in the coastal mountains near Veracruz, Mexico.

The Jalcomulco AR Training Camp (March 6-13)  is a week of training and certifications in everything for adventure racing – biking, trekking, navigation, ropes, paddling, nutrition, teamwork and more. We'll discover the charms and culture of the idyllic village of Jalcomulco. Plus, an 8 hour race to cap off a week of training in canyons, whitewater rivers, plateaus and mango plantations.

The Pico2Playa Expedition Training Week (March 13-20)  simulates an expedition race experience, as participants trek, mountain bike, paddle, swim, hike canyons, and learn ropes skills, from 4300m elevation on Pico Orizaba through remote, wild terrain to the beaches of Veracruz. Nightly stops at camps and haciendas allow us to experience local culture, food, and history.

Instructors have included internationally competitive adventure racers, trainers and course designers Bob Miller (Team Supplierpipeline) and Lawrence Foster (Team Holofibre), top female racer Trish Westman, Race Director Geoff Langford (Raid the North Extreme), and Esprit's highly skilled ropes, paddling and first aid instructors.

Visit www.camp-frontier.com for details, event dossiers and registration. Act fast – we're limited to 16 participants/week.

Check out our Facebook group for alumni experiences, photos and video.

Hope you can join us!

This is a fun and inexpensive event that's being hosted by a group I try to ride with when I can.  It's a good cause, a chance to race an MTB time trial on rugged single track, and it's in an area Gold Rush uses for our Summer Challenge and that we just visited in the Gold Rush Mother Lode.

Hey AR gang...

Adventure racers stormed the San Francisco Bike Expo on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at Cow Palace. We lured a great group of people over to our *bling* (ok, the free candy and sexy bikes helped) and educated them on the thrills of AR. Thank you to Julien and Hani of California ARA and Angel and Todd of Big Blue Adventures for respectively working and funding the booth. A huge thanks to all of our volunteers for showing their pride and spreading the addiction of Kim, Julie (who WON the women's cyclocross race! see victory photo) Randy, Andrew and Tim. Plus our gratitude to Mark of AR Nav Supplies and Cathy of Adventure Sports Journal for dropping off more AR beta, you can never have enough.

In closing, holy bike geeks! There were some insane bikes there, I caught my favorite in the photos.

A few, but good photos... we were busy chatting up AR and drooling over bikes. :)

Thanks again and long live AR!

First, we'd like to once again congratulate those who came out and competed at the Gold Rush Mother Lode expedition race.  It was our first foray into directing a multi-day race, it went very well, and it we will do it again sometime.

We have some changes for 2010.  First we will be moving the Gold Rush 24 Hour Adventure Challenge from our traditional November date to August 28-29, with check-in on Friday the 27th.  This is three weeks before the Desert Winds Expedition Race, making it a perfect tune-up for that event.

The Gold Rush Summer Challenge is moved up to June 5th.  It will be similar to past years. It is always tough to win but not to difficult for less experienced teams to finish. This year we plan to place more focus on introducing new people to Adventure Racing at the Summer Challenge.

Both the Gold Rush 24 Hour Adventure Challenge and the Gold Rush Summer Challenge will be part of the Checkpoint Tracker points series in 2010.

Put these dates on your calendars.

And for some extra fun, come out and see the cyclocross races starting at 10am.  I've heard from the race director that the course will have some AR elements.  I'm so stoked!  If you are cross-curious, bring your bike and give it a whirl.

The Gold Rush Mother Lode Expedition Race this past weekend was a great success.  Competitors covered between 180 and 300 miles over the course of the race.  We had fantastic support from the local adventure racing community.  I wanted to take this opportunity to thanks a few of the many people whose contributions were critical to the success of the event.

Galen Pewtherer helped us keep the leader board current and posted news from the course.  He spent the evenings sitting outside coffee shops on the sidewalk or in his car keeping the information on the website current. He was also part of the crew at the ropes section. When we needed to know where people were on the course, Galen had the information for us.  Galen was there from registration Wednesday through the awards on Sunday.

Mats Jannson took care of the web coverage from home on day 1 while Galen was assigned to the team that assembled the ropes section.  He did the same on day 4 so that Galen could be at the finish.  Mats was also the person who pre-ran the Tuolumne River trek, including the 2700 feet in 1mile ascent of Sugarloaf to CP11.  Some teams referred to this as the wall of death after the event.

Mark Manning arrived with a GPS device and an off road worth 4wd vehicle.  He spent most of Friday and Saturday placing checkpoints that Adrian and I would have had to set during the event.  He arrived Friday morning and probably didn't see a team until Saturday afternoon.  Adrian and I had our hands full and Mark's expert assistance was critical. Mark also donated some great prizes from ARNavSupplies.com.

Mark Henderson worked at our ropes course and assisted in responding the the "Spot Help" message when Team SOAR/baarbd/RWG needed assistance.  He served worked at checkpoints and ran errands.  His last assignment was a remote optional checkpoint that was only visited by 3 or 4 teams. Mark served as the subject matter expert where checkpoint staff didn't have adventure racing experience or knowledge.

Todd Jackson arrived and donated a huge cooler of beverages, mostly beer.  Todd may not feel like he did much, but he was available for any assignment when everyone else was tied to something else.  Prior to his arrival I had experienced several situations where something critical came up and there was no one available to deal with it.  Knowing that I had some one with vast experience as a promoter available to handle anything that might come up was a huge peace of mind for me.  Todd was part of the response to the second "Spot Help" message of the race when an injury forced the race leaders Team Tecnu Extreme to withdraw from the event.

Team Tecnu Extreme Staphaseptic and Team SOAR.baarbd/RWG both dropped form the event but stayed for the rest of the race.  By staying and supporting the event and the other teams they exemplified the sense of community that makes this sport so great.

Nor Cal Adventure Racers.  The team rosters were dominated with adventure racers from northern California.  Frankly, I was surprised we didn't get a few more teams from southern California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, and Arizona.  This event happened, and succeeded on the backs of the NorCal Adventure Racing Community.  Thanks for coming out and making this local event a huge sucess.

Congratulations to all the teams who took the Fall Brawl head on! It was 'easy' compared to the BAAR Brawl, but by no means was it a kind course. Beautiful and brutal. The field never ceases to amaze me... teams hailed from the Bay Area and Sac as well as all the way north to Redding and south to LA / Bakersfield!

They started out on a foggy Stinson Beach and kayaked with the seals before enduring surf and waves of the Pacific. That was followed by a demanding and then amazing mountain bike leg once the fog cleared and lastly a challenging trek... with some teams continuing on into the darkness!

Here's a little clip from the event debreif...

Scoring
I'm not sure where to begin... so here are some very honorable mentions: True Grit for getting all of the trek points and venturing to try to get CP4, the kayak point that they couldn't see in the fog and to Tim K for going most of the way solo to CP4. Las Comadres as the only all womens team! Off the Couch and the other first-timer-teams who signed up for a 10-hour race (yikes!) to try out AR. Team Sponge Bob for turning Trek1 and the kayak into a creative adventure of their own, Juan-Avo-Cado for almost but not (phew) getting arrested, Mountain Monkeys - SOAR for blazing the course on uncharted territory and certainly the Dirty Avocados who are the effective winners for getting all the mandatory CPs and finishing by the 8pm cut off. :) Congratulations to every team for laughing at the nail polish CP and enduring the brutal hike-a-bike up Willow Camp to Ridge Crest!

Hello all,

Let me know if you or anyone you know might be interested in helping to support
our team during a 4 day expedition race from Nov 4 - 8 up in the Sierras near
Sonora/Yosemite.

Our crew chief is flying out from CO and she'll need some help!
(She just did a vid for mutual of omaha -
http://www.ahamoment.com/pg/voting?id=8443)

Here's the race site:
http://www.teamkarma.com/forms/Flyr1Page4day.htm

In brief, we seek one or two individuals that wish to commit to our team for
this 4 day non stop competition that entails mountain biking, trekking,
orienteering, kayaking and climbing. All by navigation. The event never stops
from the start until the finish line. It's adventure to the fullest extent.

Role and responsibility:
Help drive our vehicle throughout the route, providing support 1-3 times per
day. A bit of hurry up and wait with a lot of downtime and socializing with
other crews while you wait for us to complete each section. It is always much
quicker for the support crew to arrive at the meeting points. Each time the crew
meets up with us they will assist with refueling, gear change, rest and
recovery. The crew is an essential part of our team in the sense of strategy,
responsibility of managing equipment and taking part in the non-stop journey.

Expectations:
Meet up with us the morning of Nov 4 to drive out to the race start.
Accommodations, expenses, and gifts are taken care of by us. If you can't start
out the race with us, perhaps you can come Friday night to help Friday night
through Sunday morning.

Requirements:
Willingness to work for long hours and endure lots. It will rain. Maybe snow.
It will be cold. You might not get much sleep. Quitting is not an option.
Additionally support members should have basic camping gear and have the ability
to read basic road maps and directions.

Details:
It's not glamorous, it's dirty, it's crazy, you'll stay up all night, we'll be
exhausted, you will be exhausted, you'll see some cool parts of the Sierras,
you'll wait around for what seems like forever, you'll make lifelong friends,
and you'll feel a real sense of accomplishment as you help us to the finish
line. Sound like FUN?

For more, please drop me a note...

Please forward to someone you might think is interested...

Thanks!
Tim Kuenster

So I am giving up on my SpeedPlay Frog pedals (sorry Andrew!) after 2+ years riding with them.  What do you use for an AR MTB pedal?

I am barrowing some Egg Beaters to test those out.  What are some other the options (pros/cons) to test out?

-Time (never used them)
-SPD (used cheap ones prior to using Frogs)
-Egg Beaters
-Candies
-Frogs (current.  Unhappy with inability to clip in after hiking in sand, plastic pedal body, no Allen bolt tightening, cleats are $$$.  But I love ease of in and out (when everything is clear), and pulling out every now and then on steeps (once on a DH scary!!)
-Some other I don't even know about??

I am looking for EZ entry on up hills, and pedal / cleat not clogging up with sand, mud, snow, and lightwieght!

Wall Street Journal: LAREDO, Texas -- More than 200 canoers and kayakers jostled in the shallow waters of the Rio Grande Saturday morning, racing 33 miles to win glory, thousands of dollars in prize money and, perhaps, a better reputation for a border often synonymous with death and violence. The race, the largest ever on the river, is part of a cross-border effort to replace drug smuggling and human trafficking with ecotourism.

Year-long series of more than 50 events to culminate withNational Championship where qualifying teams will compete head-to-headfor bragging rights and a $10,000 cash prize purse.

Greenville, SC (PRWEB) October 18, 2009 -- Checkpoint Zero, LLC todayannounced the launch of Checkpoint Tracker, an innovative new conceptfor competitive adventure racing in the United States comprised of a50-event nationwide adventure racing series, a rankings systemfeaturing Sprint and Pro rankings, an entirely new Web 2.0 socialnetworking website, and a National Championship race offering a $10,000cash prize purse.

Adventure racing teams interested in beingranked based on their performance at Checkpoint Tracker adventure raceswill be able to choose from over 50 events between January and October2010. The series includes Sprint length (up to 12 hours), Sport length(12 to 18 hours),Adventure length (18 to 48 hours), and Expeditionlength races, which will see competitors racing non-stop for more thantwo full days.

Checkpoint Tracker will publish two distinctrankings based on points earned by teams competing at participatingevents. Teams may compete in as many events as they choose and combinetheir five best results for their season points total.  Sprint rankingswill combine points from Sprint races only while the Pro rankings willuse a weighted points system to combine results from Sport, Adventure, and Expedition length races.

"Checkpoint Tracker representsthe evolution of competitive adventure racing in the United States. It's a fresh start...a break from a status quo," said Paul Angell,President of Checkpoint Zero, LLC. "Adventure racing has yet to fullyrealize its potential to capture the imagination of adventure seekingoutdoor enthusiasts. It remains a balkanized, niche sport. High profileevents like Eco Challenge and Primal Quest have succeeded in vaultingthe sport into the limelight, but they failed to deliver a sustainablefoundation on which to grow the sport at the grassroots and amateurlevel. Checkpoint Tracker provides a framework for doing exactly that.I'm very excited about what 2010 holds for the sport of adventureracing."

Beginning October 18, 2009 adventure racers in theUnited States will be able to register at Checkpoint Tracker.com toparticipate in the2010 Checkpoint Tracker adventure racing season, which begins on January 16th, 2010 at the North Georgia Adventure Racein Chatsworth, GA. Featuring personal Racer profiles and Team profilesthat include a roster of team members and the team's racingschedule,Checkpoint Tracker.com will serve as the online hub for livecoverage of events in progress via an innovative web application calledRace Central.

After the last regular season event, CheckpointTracker will host a National Championship race that will bring togetherthe top 60 teams by points in the Pro rankings and the top 15 teams bypoints in the Sprint rankings. The best adventure racing teams in thecountry will face an all new Adventure length course designed by BonkHard Racing. The National Championship will be worth twice as manypoints as regular season Adventure length races and will offer a$10,000 cash prize purse.
