Thule Adventure Race
Sea Otter's Debut Adventure Race to Test Brains - and Brawn
MONTEREY, Calif. - Organizers of the 17th annual Sea Otter Classic,
a Celebration of Sport, throw open the gates this April to multi-
sport athletes with the debut of the Sea Otter Classic Thule
Adventure Race.
The event will feature sprint and traditional distance categories
for solo racers and teams. The race includes kayaking on Monterey
Bay. Trail running, cycling, and navigational skills will be tested
on the Fort Ord Bureau of Land Management trails. All adventure
racing will take place on Friday, April 13, 2007.
A 'Corporate Cup' will be awarded to be best team from industry
competing in the sprint 2-4 hour race. The competition is open to
teams of three (3) from the same company and must include at least
one female and one male racer. This is a great team building and
fitness opportunity.
The 'Warrior Cup' is limited to retired and active duty military
personnel. Team members must be from the same branch of the military
and include one male and one female in the team of three (3).
Competition will be in the sprint race.
The distances for the sprint race will include approximately 1-2
mile ocean kayak, a 10-14 mile mountain bike course, and a 3-5 mile
trail run. Overall distance will be between 15-20 miles. In order to
participate, you will need a mountain bike, an approved ANSI helmet,
a good pair of running shoes and a willingness to try something new
and unforgettable.
Special tests are designed to add an element of fun while
challenging your team, both mentally and physically. These special
tests require no additional gear on your part and no special
training. Kayak, paddles, and personal flotation devices will be
provided to competitors in the Sprint Distance, Warrior Cup, and
Corporate Cup categories.
Experienced course designer, Todd Jackson of Big Blue Adventure
Series, brings his expertise to Sea Otter. He will craft a race
course emphasizing the distinct features of the Monterey Bay and the
Fort Ord BLM trails.
"This unique course will give athletes an opportunity to participate
in the Sea Otter Classic in a completely different way than in
previous years," says Jackson. "Kayaking on Monterey Bay, then
running and mountain biking in Fort Ord will be the perfect entree
to Adventure Racing at Sea Otter."
