There are big changes going on at the Athens Area Humane Society.  Starting in February 2009 we will begin pulling dogs from the Athens-Clarke County Animal Control and adopting them out from our Adoption Outreach Center at Pet Supplies Plus.
We are in the process of adding a dog room to our current adoption center which, once completed, will be used to house about five dogs at a time.  But in order to make this happen we will need for each dog we pull to be fostered for at least two weeks prior to going over to the adoption center.

Foster Parents are on the front lines of saving animals' lives. Each Foster Family takes in a cat/dog, kitten/puppy, litter of kittens/puppies, rabbit or small animal for a limited time (often 2-4 weeks) and provides care until the animal can be returned to the shelter and placed in the Adoption Program. During the busy summer months, the AAHS will take in nearly 200 cats and kittens each month, which severely taxes our small shelter. Foster Parents are needed to house the overflow animals throughout this very challenging season.

Every year, the AAHS takes in more than a thousand cats and small animals. It is our goal to find homes for every healthy, adoptable pet, and our Foster Care Program is essential to acheiving this goal . You can be a part of the AAHS' lifesaving work by becoming a Foster Parent. Here's how:
  • Complete a Foster Care Application.
  • Attend a foster care orientation/training session.
  • After orientation, we'll work with you to schedule an appointment for an AAHS representative to come to your home for the required Department of Agriculture inspection.
  • Bring home your first foster animal for some much needed TLC!
Download a Foster Care Application from our web site www.AthensHumaneSociety.org and email the completed form to Foster@... or fax to 1-888-694-9993. You can also drop your application by the shelter between 10am and 4pm any day except Wednesday.
