Hey everybody,
Most of you are aware that we're now installing 8 new holes in the
woods. Winter's a great time to do this because all the underbrush is
nice and tame. We've already cleared most of 3 holes and hope to have
the rest done very soon.
Thing is, here's the sum-total of people who have worked on these
holes:
Jamey & Susan Tinch, Rob McMaken, Jon Morgan.
That's it.
We have 40 people on the current athens disc golf mailing list. Some
of those probably don't live in Athens, so let's say we have 25
athenians on the list. If we have 1 work day a month and each of you
comes to one work day every 4 months, that still gives us 6 or 7
people at each work day.
With 6 or 7 people we can get a hell of a lot done in 2 hours. And
that's all we do, usually, is 2 or 3 hours. This is not back breaking
labor.
Thing is, there are far, far more than 25 people that play regularly
at the park. One problem is that we've done a horrible job getting
everyone connected, so most of the disc golfers don't know anything
about this.
We need to fix that.
We got one of the volunteer groups of the year awards and, frankly,
I'm a little bit embarrassed about it. The turnout at the work days
since the course went in has been pretty pathetic most of the time.
The only reason the course has gotten installed and maintained is that
the park has been wildly helpful about it. We, as disc golfers, have
been generally awful.
What can we do to fix that? Those of you who play but aren't helping,
why not? What can we do to make it easier for you to help out?
Speak up, eh?
