Apparently what mifs Safina and Kuznetzova is the most fans would rather see a
match between Wozniacki and Kirilenko, instead of watching those two play a
couple of nobodys in comparison.
Wozniacki and Kirilenko clearly was the best ladies match to watch today.
That's why it was centre court.
Maybe a little jealousy?
I think so.
Well I have 23 of 32 picks still in the draw.
Sharapova is gone of course.
I picked Mattek over Stosur and the match was a good as expected
Wozniak let me down getting upset in round one.
Sugiyama was a suprise over Schnyder
Who would have thought Flipkins would still be around
I do still have 14 of 16 for the round of 16.
How's everyone else doing?
I have my doubts about Sharapova and Azarenka because of injuries.
It is claimed that Wimbledon is going to be tough on girls who make a noise when
playing (i.e. those who are trying). This could make Sharapova's first round
match interesting - but only if Viktoriya Kuznetsova isn't intimidated. When
Viktoriya played Shenay Perry on Thursday, Viktoriya made a lot of noise. If
Viktoriya is like that against Sharapova next week in the first round, then the
Wimbledon crowd will get to hear that Sharapova is really fairly quiet in
comparison.
I was most impressed in the qualies to find that a little girl I photographed in
a Grade 5 junior tournament in Latvia in 2004, qualified for Wimbledon on
Thursday - I have photographs of her doing it. It is great how some of them
progress.
As for who I would like to win - well I was very sad when little angel Dinara
lost in Paris a few weeks ago - it would be wonderful if she could win this
time.
Well as usual I'm about to make my lame handicaps, only so far I'm only to the
quarters.
Safina v Wozniacki
V Williams v Jankovic
Zvonareva v Dementieva
Sharapova v S. Williams
Safina and Wozniacki have the toughest draws to that point I think as both would
have to get by former Grand Slam Champions in the round of 16. Mauresmo v
Safina promises to be a good match and Mauresmo has won Wimbledon before but she
hasn't played to well in recent months and Safina seems to be on top of her game
until she gets to a GS Final.
Wozniacki has a couple of potential match ups that could be quite difficult.
She will likely fase Kirilenko and then Medina-Garrigues before facing
Kuznetzova. If one of the first two don't upset her Kuznetsova may be the
easiest match for her as Caroline's big ground strokes may be a little to much
for Kuznetzova on grass.
Venus has some potentially tough matches getting to Ivanovic but on grass not
really and I don't think Ivanovic moves well enough to beat Venus on grass. It
would take a perfect game plan.
Jankovic has a pretty easy path to the final. If Jelena loses before she runs
into Venus it will only be because Jelena lost and played poorly, not that
anyone beat her, not on grass anyway.
Zvonareva also has a pretty easy draw, as long as her ankle holds up from the
severe sprain she endured in Charleston earlier this year. Wozniak is the only
potential real threat in the round of 16.
Dementieva has a couple of potentially formidable foes or at least in the past
they would have appeared that way. Elena has an easy path to Cibulkova and
again, Dementieva's ground strokes will be too much for Dominika on the fabled
grass.
Sharapova has the toughest draw to the quarters. She could face Dulko, Petrova
and Azarenk all in a row. Dulko always plays Maria tough and nothing need be
said about how well Petrova and Azarenk will play against Maria. If she gets
through to the semi's including what will be a rubber match at Wimbledon against
Serena, she may then become unstoppable to the Championship. All depends on the
shoulder.
Serena doesn't have the easiest draw and there are a couple of potential land
mines she may have to face, specifically Hantuchova if she shows in the round of
16. Hantuchova is playing well and always seems to play well against Serena (in
spite of what a couple of the scores may say.) Hantuchova will have to get by
Zheng and Schnyder either one that could also be a land mine for Serena.
Depending on how Serena is playing during the fortnight if the wrong one (for
Serena) shows up at the right time in the round of 16, you could see Serena bow
out before the quarters.
Well that's my ramble. I'm sure Rowland will have some dissenting opinions, as
might Bri.

Err... for women outside the top 100, Wimbledon starts on Tuesday 16th June.
The list of wild cards is on the following site, and Ashley is not listed.
http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/news/articles/2009-06-13/200906091244555590589.ht\
ml?promo=rss
When Ashley was a hot prospect in juniors IMG pulled some strings for her. It
seems now that the girls they are pulling strings for are Michelle Larcher de
Brito and Alexa Glatch.
I saw both of them in juniors years ago. I don't remember ever talking to
Alexa; but I did chat to Michelle last year before her match at Wimbledon; she
seemed so nice; the kind of girl that guys dream of having for a daughter. I
was looking forward to seeing her in qualies this year - now it is not going to
happen. :((
Whether they are doing Laura Robson a big favour giving her a wild card into the
singles main draw depends on who she is picked to play against. There is a lot
to be said for playing qualifiers if you think you are good enough to win them.
They produce points, and get you ready to win that all important first round
main draw match.
It would be cool if Anne Keothavong got to play the same opponent in the 1st
round at Wimbledon that she played against in the 1st round at Roland Garros;
they played against each other in the girls semifinal at Wimbledon in 2001, when
Anne had a bandaged leg.
--------------------------
Young Ashley is not someone who occupies my thought very much. I still have a
beautiful framed photo of her at Astrid Bowl on my lounge wall. Hope she makes
a good living; that is what really matters.
Greetings from Malibu, CA, where Pisani Training is camping out for the next
week and a half.
Back in action is former world number 39, Ashley Harkleroad. After giving
birth just 2 months ago to little Charles Adams the 4th, Ashley is back on
the court and in the gym, getting ready for team tennis and hopefully the
USOpen.
I have to be honest with you, she hasn't missed a beat when it comes to
hitting the ball. In fact, she could very well be hitting the ball even
better now.
The new racket from Prince, and the fact that Ashley has been carrying a 15
pound baby boy around, has helped her upper body get strong and there was
considerable pop on all of her shots today.
The main thing that I am going to do is to get all of her strength back,
increase her endurance, and get her moving again. Today I worked on some
on-court agility, more specifically linear movement, and then in the gym we
worked legs, core and forehand and serve explosiveness with dumbbell
strength training.
Using a series of exercises for each specific movement pattern will help her
recovery increase rapidly. I am making sure not to over do it with her.I can
here Lenny my coach whispering to me , "Less is More."
It will take some time, but I have known Ashley for a long time and I know
that her body changes quickly.
It will be fun to get her back in fighting shape and there is no doubt, her
best is yet to come. I love training professional athletes like Ashley.
It's fun going after the best of the best, and Ash is a great vehicle to
live vicariously through! Bionics.that is what it is all about!

Logically, if Ashley is making any comeback this year, it'll need to be in
time for the US Open in September. A comeback after is like taking the year
off, although there would be some North American tours to play.
So Wimbleton is in less than a month then a skid of US (and one Canadian!!)
events leading to the Open.
Anyone hear the plans?
Seems a little early to try and mount a comeback, timing issue only.
Maybe start getting in shape 4 months after the baby but no real match play
for 1-2 months after that ... pressing the Open dates REAL hard.

Plus I can't read a draw sheet properly.
Sub Jankovic for Kuznetseva now.
Serena has had too many three setters already.
I think Wozniaki takes her.

Azarenka is still there as I said she may be. Beat my first pick.

My final four are
Ivanovic
V. Williams
Wozniaki
Kuznetseva
Alternates would be
Sharapova if the shoulder holds up.
Safina
Outside shots in the top half
Azarenka
I would have said Lisicki but she's already gone.
Bottom Half Alternates
Jankovic
S. Williams
Outside shots in the bottom half.
Dementieva
Bartoli
Radwanska
Hantuchova
The bottom half is clearly the tougher half.
The Round of 16 in the bottom half could be a who's who of women's tennis.
The top half could have some nice names but with Lisicki gone and Sharapova just
making a comeback it won't be nearly as impressive.
Women's Tennis is in good hands right now I think.
Ashley has just over 50 WTA points, but these will shed over the next few months
sending her into ranking no-where's land.
Assume she will return on the ITC and junior circuits, just time to get in
shape.
Maria is also schedule to return, but long lay-offs are harsh.
In spite of the power of the William's sisters, there is no real claim to the #1
ranking... sorry Dinara.
Best wishes and sleepless nights go out to Ashley and her family on the birth of
her son.
Rumors are that the Rogers Open in Toronto is a GREAT tune up for the Open.
Everyone wishes ashley well....
Healthy Baby, full recovery and round of 16 in the US Open :).
